Big MYSTERY Fish Caught on VINTAGE Tackle!!! (Surprise Catch)

Took my brand new Battle II 5000 for a spin yesterday for the very first time and I hooked a 20lb yellowtail using a Ugly Stik X2 (medium hard) rod kzbin.infoUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . This combo was recommended on some website and it did not disappoint me. The reel is smooth, the drag click is pretty cool cause i think it adds to the excitement of fighting the fish, personally the drag is my favorite part. I use braid and 300 yards will fill the entire spool. This combo is my main setup from now on although I have to disclose I am new to fishing.

That reel is a Alcedo Micron. The Alcedo Micron, was one of the series of high quality reels made in Europe that were were considered the top of the line reels. In addition to the Micron, there was the Cargem Mignon, and the Orvis 50, which was made by a couple of companies from Italy and sold by Orvis. There were high quality reels made in the US, too, BTW, they just don’t have the following today. The Micron, Mignon and the 50’s are still popular today and with normal maintence will last for another 30-40-50-60 years. The protocol for fishing with reels before instant anti-reverse was to fish without the anti-reverse, then when you get into s fish, you turn it on as necessary. The rod, appeared to NOT to be the quality of the reel. Just because the rod is old, doesn’t mean it’s quality. The lure, the spinner, appeared to be a Mepps, which as still sold today. The “vintage” crankbait is a really one that is relatively new that some sellers have said are “vintage” I remember Rebel selling them new five years ago. You can still buy them from China. I’d say that snap swivel is “overloading” your lure, it be better tying directly to the lure, or using a very, very light snap. Oh yeah, it wasn’t until the late ‘70’s when anything that had a swimming lip or actual was designed to “swim” through the water was nick-named a “crank-bait”. Believe it or not, if a lure was good and caught fish, it stayed around for a while, sometimes decades. Marketing wasn’t as crazy as it is now. Just because it’s “new” doesn’t mean it’s better.

The Orvis 50 was originally called Pelican 50, made in Italy by Zangi. I have owned a couple of Alcedos, they were decent reels but they did have issues with the main shaft, which could not cope with bigger fish without becoming skewed. The reels were manufactured until the late 1970's. The Mitchell 308 and the (overlapping in time) ABU 33 were much better reels. A noisy anti-return was the standard in the 1960's to the late 1980's

Hey! Just letting you know, that’s a St Croix Imperial, I believe those are old fly rods so that’s probably why it felt floppy, seeing as you used it for a spinning rod.

I use a 55-year-old or more 8’6” Heddon Pal fly rod with “FasTip Action” and tiny ultralight spinning reels for panfish. The “FasTip” leaves a decent amount of backbone behind the soft tip. Works for me.

I have a vintage Mitchell open-face reel (it's light-medium, not ultra light), and it is by far my favorite reel out of all of my reels. Even as old as it is, it still casts further and better than any of my newer light-medium reels. I bought it about 12 years ago at a local flea market, took it home, cleaned it up, oiled it, and re-lined it, and took it fishing. It just blew me away, and I fell in love. I've probably caught more fish on it alone than I have on all of my other setups combined. I stuck it on an old Ugly Stick rod that I had lying around. I wouldn't sell it for all the money in the world.

The reel is a Mitchell, and the rod is a fiberglass Fenwick, I believe. Yes ultralight started in the 60s. The first ultralight rods were the top half of fly rods, stuck into a broom handle, the reel taped on with electricians tape. We had "thumb nail" spoons, and a few small crank baits. They were used for trout during the "summer duldrums". Two pound test was hard to get we used 4 pound test. None of this was available locally, it was mail order, from Herter's. Look up the old Herter's catalogs on the internet. Learned about ultra light from magazine articles in Field & Stream, and Outdoor Life. This was in 60 to 62 when I was 10/12 years old.

I 1958 or 59 i ordered an ultra-light spinning rod and reel from the "Herters" catalog. It's rod was very limber just like that one. My lure of choice, a Lazy Ike especially the small "Fly iIke" . They were great as long as they were made of balsa wood. When they switched to plastic they ruined the floating action. Back then it was hard for a pre-teen kid to find four pound test monofilament. The owner of our hardware store said I had the first spinning reel in the county. I would pack my stuff on my bike and ride out to the small streams. Old tennis shoes and an army ruck sack and I was ready to wade and fish. Maybe that is why I like your fishing trips. Thanks

I still use a 1970's Garcia Mitchell 300 over 40 years old. I bought it in the base exchange while serving in the USAF. The gears in those days were all brass ,no cast metal or nylon washers. I wish that the craftsmanship of that level would return to the reel industry. Fiberglass poles were brutally tough although heavy and bulky. Enjoy the old stuff, its durable nature makes it worth holding onto.

I was given an Alcedo Micron just like the one you are using in the mid 1960's by a older relative who bought it and only used it a few times. I was about 15 yrs old at the time. I still remember it as being one of the best reels I have owned. I don't remember what rod it was on but it was very whippy which was typical of the fiberglass rods of the time. Good luck with it.

Growing up with some of that vintage stuff... Casting with ultra lite rods of old.... Long pause at end of back swing.... Forward swing starts slow with a quick snap at the end.... So all loading happens in the forward swing

That setup reminds me of what my grandpa used to fish with when I was really young. He bought a cheap browning spinning combo he fished with when I got a little older, I still have the reel from the combo, and my cousin has the rod, and we both use them.

As a young kid I fished with a Mitchell Garcia 300. I abused that reel as everyone did. Many years later, I started to collect all models of the Mitchell Garcia reels. I have in box examples of their first attempts at ultra-lites. I have medium duty reels and surf casting both left and right hand retrieve. I purchased most from flea markets. I also have a few examples of Garcia rods. My original reel from my childhood resurfaced one day when I was digging through a box of junk in the basement of my parents house. It was seized tight. I disassembled it, cleaned out the old hard grease, relubed it, and am using it to this day. I don't want a new reel with GPS or the weather channel on it. After a year you can't buy parts to repair it. A few of the younger guys at the club are picking up on the fact the older tackle was made better. Yeah, it has a few chips and dings on it but, something very satisfying about using that reel. Today's rods have the advantage of carbon fiber and the new polymer lines are excellent. I still enjoy going after that lunker, that we fishing die hards know, is in there.

That set-up reminds me of my first " spinning outfit " with a glass rod and a Mitclel l Reel. C : 1961. They sure have come a long way, the guides on the early spinning rods were small and hard too cast. Also the " LINE " was really bad. Like trying to cast wire ! This is a nice set up tho. Mitchell 300 were built like a Workhorse. They were the only ones that were all metal that came out and were the only ones for a long time. To retrieve line on it was slow and I mean very slow cuz I can get for 6-month 5 to 1 and such on your real. This was probably the 3.2 or something like that I'm not sure the exact but it is a very small retrieval but as I mentioned for its time he was the greatest thing out there fishing reels. Because of that one there wasn't too many built. But after that then they started the line with the Mitchell 300 and became very roll down in the fishing industry. The offset handle on it was remarkably a wonderful feeling of hand The Retreat one of mine wasn't very fast but still once you cook something it was on that real held out and still does today. I love you on Mitchell's they're fantastic. And to think these reals have outlasted any other metal real out there one because they were the first and some people still get a minion and they're still working today.

I took 1,000 yards of braided linen line off my father’s Penn 14/0 and replaced it for him with Dacron. You could have your terminal tackle 600 feet down and still have HALF A MILE of line on the spool!
