@5:28 Jinshi was treating the walk to his meeting venue as a date with Mao Mao. Hence, he wanted her to chat with him. I like that he realized quickly he can get her to talk if he asks questions about her father.

1:15 They omitted her inner monologues here, but in the manga, Maomao was kinda pissed at Jinshi bc she did her best in preparing the make up, yet, he doesn't seem to understand the meaning of "disguise" with all that luxurious bath 😂. She also acknowledged she still can't hide Jinshi's beauty 100% with this makeup, but she did her best. Jinshi was so funny cause he tried to be a commoner, but his straight pose (like a true nobility) kinda ruined it, so Maomao always tried to remind him lol. His alias 'Jinka' is also peculiar, but its peculiarity is only gonna be explained in S2. 9:10 & 9:49 Let's pray we'll have more seasons cause I'd love to see Maomao reach this point in the anime 😆

Everyone's acting like it'll be some big surprise, but Maomao already knows her dad used to be a court doctor. I think this was the moment Jinshi was able to put 2 and 2 together. He knew about Luoman and that Maomao learned from her dad, but upon learning that Maomao's dad is a eunuch, all the pieces fell in place. The thing about Maomao's character, she's reserved, and she was raised that way. She won't divulge information unless it's important, which makes better for the suspense of the story.

She knows Lakan is her birth father, and that Leoman is actually her great uncle, but she doesn't feel the need to tell anyone that, especially when she'd rather people think she and Lakan are unrelated. Lakan makes that last part hard with how hard he tries to dote on his distant daughter.

i enjoyed the disguise scene, it was great in the manga but the anime made me appreciate maomao's meticulousness in every aspect of disguise even more, probaby because i'm a fast reader so i don't take in details as much while the anime will make me sit through it

Let’s see new reveals: Jinshi has athletic body, hands used to train with weapons, and apparently has experience in military camps (not Eunich stuff). Maomao’s Dad was recognized by the Empire and allowed to study abroad. The grandmother of the current Emperor had him castrated and eventually thrown out of the Rear Palace. This new character, the previous Emperor ‘s mother apparently was a big deal. Suiren and Gaoshun go way back to Jinshi’s childhood. Suiren has a grown daughter hhmmm I wonder if we ever meet.

Maomao's dad was made an eunich because he went overseas, since he is an intellectual not just any ordinary man. That is one of the requirements in ancient China if I am not mistaken. This is to make sure that he won't leave his "seeds" behind in a foreign land. Yeah, it is a crazy way of thinking back then.

I interpreted that as him being very accomplished as a doctor, even studying abroad, but then he was forced into the position by the late empress reagent. Inner court doctor position is very undesirable because men are forbidden from entering, unless they are a eunuch. No doctor is willing to do that just to work at the inner court. That is also the reason the Quack still has a job, even though he is highly incompetent. Cant even pressure people into the position because making new eunuch is recently banned in the series.

When Maomao thinks “yeah, it WOULD be weird for a rich girl with her own attendant to just walk around the market holding a chicken and some radishes”, the Nekokurage manga shows a cute mental image of her doing just that with a “yum!” facial expression (volume 6, chapter 28). I’m a little sad the anime didn’t include that.

I like how Maomao's explanation of decreasing a courtesan's value was trickled and shown to us in previous episodes and was just clarified to us on this one. If a Courtesan's value is dependent on their purity... Does that mean that Pairin, one of the Three Princesses of the Verdigris House, who is surely a courtesan of high value-- the one we know who wants a customer with a lot of "stamina" and comes across as the most sexually active, is a pure virgin? But that doesn't make sense, cause her disposition shows contrary. Maomao mentioned in this episode that tea with these high value courtesans is worth 1-year of a commoner's salary. If I recall correctly, during the episode with Lihaku sent to the Verdigris, it was said that Pairin is worth half a year of a commoner's salary. If so, this checks out, Pairin is sexually active but doesn't get pregnant-- and she still is one of the top courtesans of the Verdigris despite the fact that her value has already gone down by half. Anyone who does get pregnant has no value and is gone for good, and that explains why thus far we've had no display of what happens to a pregnant courtesan. Lakan's subtlety alludes to this.

(spoiler) . . . . . . . . Maomao knows Lakan is her blood father. She doesn't hate him, Lakan just creeps her out and she'd rather pretend to be unrelated to him. Lakan actually loves his daughter and wants to be an actual father figure to Maomao, despite her protests.

lmao that Clark Kent edit actually got me laughing pretty good. Maomao has so many inner monologues about things that I sometimes wish she would just bring them up with people like Jinshi or Gaoshun lol. It's funny how she's been taught not to overstep her bounds but she's so inquisitive that I wish she'd ask, like why Jinshi brought up the description of her dad and what the point of asking about lowering the value of someone from the Verdigris House.

I love your reactions❤, even in other animes. This is one of the shows I follow and love. And yeah, next episode will be dark...but fire. Gaoshun and Suiren are both aware that Maomao is different from any toy. They know that she is becoming more to him. Given Jinshi's true position, they are somehow worried for him actually.

There was wrong in the eng sub though compare to the LN it should just be father and not adoptive father YET. That is why Jinshi was shock after knowing he was eunuch and were he puts 2 and 2 together that Lakan is Maomao father because Maomao was just adoptive by the father that she is referring to. In the sub, she is previous episodes it was always just father and suddenly they change it here as adoptive father (correct me if I am wrong) which alter the mystery factor for me on this episode.

Its less about being surprised Maomaos "dad" being enunuch, and more about a DOCTOR being one. He is really touchy about eunuchs because he sees castration as barbaric. Maomao calls him adoptive father to other people and father inside her mind.
