I heard "doesn't have to be perfect", "the more irregular the better" and "works up really quickly" and thought- THIS IS FOR ME! Going to try this on my next quilt!

It IS fun, and addictive. Just use a thread that isn't too thick. I use #8, sometimes #10. I have used #5 on my grandson's quilt, but that is a little harder to pull through. Relax, put on music or maybe an audio book, and stitch away.😊

I started Big stitch quilting about 10 yrs ago. I am hooked! I use size 8 crochet thread, in coordinating colors to my quilt, and I also use curvy lines, stitching along with music It is fast, relaxing, and has the casual look that I love.

Thank you for this video, you made the stitching seem simplified. And easy to do I think I will give this a try. Maybe on a small wall hanging at first.

Thank you for idea of drawing free hand. I hand quilt because it looks homey. I wanted a little more interest. Just happens my baby quilt looks almost like your pattern. Caught my eye. Big stitch are faster. I did a queen in a week, started baby quilt yesterday. If it wasn't for thanks giving it would be done by Friday. Lol

I have been struggling with knots and tangled thread, so I am very excited to try you no-knot technique. Now for the tangles. I am using a doubled 12 weight thread, and it knots like crazy. I have ordered some bees wax, hoping it will help. I love that big stitch look, and can't wait to see my first completed project.

Hi don't know if it helps but its just a single strand (ie no double) to use so no/relatively little knotting...the thread weight will still show up well. Can use perle threads 5 & 8 too. Julia

I used size 10 cotton, mainly because I had some left after a tatting project. And I was broke, so I couldn't buy a marking tool. I used a sliver of soap to mark on a darker quilt.

Thank you for this! I'm brand new to quilting, so I've been watching as many tutorials as I can to familiarize myself with quilting from beginning to end. I don't have access to a quilting machine, nor the money to pay for someone else to do it for me. I'm getting ready to make my first quilt and I'm preparing myself to do the quilting by hand. I know it will take time, but isn't that what Autumn evenings are for? You have made this very easy to follow, and given me the confidence to say "Yes! I can do this, too!" Thank you for giving me the encouragement and confidence I was lacking! (Btw, that pink quilt you have is absolutely gorgeous! The backing material was just amazing! Usually pink quilts are very pastel, I loved this one!) Thanks again!

Using a hoop only half filled is nice near the edge of a quilt. I mean the edge of the quilt lies across the equator of the hoop

This is my first time doing the quilting by hand (I've previously had someone do them on a machine). I have no idea how much pearl cotton to purchase for a queen size quilt- any ideas? Looks like 1 spool has 87 yards. Is that enough, or should I get several spools?

@QuiltShowNews

Use a needle that has a large eye and a sharp point. Darning needles may not work because they often have a blunt point.

I've been trying this method on a quilt using pearl cotton #12 and having a hard time getting the needle through all three layers of the quilt sandwich... any tips?? Thanks for the video!!
@QuiltShowNews
@QuiltShowNews 5 жыл бұрын
I would first try a needle with a smaller eye, if possible. If that doesn't do the trick, try 3 strands of embroidery floss to give you a smaller thickness to pull through your quilt.
@vickiebell9798

do you have to make sure the batting and the backing is 3-5 inches larger than the quilt top like you do if you are quilting on a machine?
@QuiltShowNews
@QuiltShowNews 6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. You prepare your quilt sandwich exactly the way you would if you were going to quilt by machine.

If you are quilting without a hoop or frame, why do you need all the excess backing and batting? Isn't it just cut away before the quilt is bound? Just curious. This is something I haven't found much info on.
@belenfry3443
@belenfry3443 4 жыл бұрын
@@sabrinazarogoza8686 the fabric draws up on itself as you quilt. The excess covers the shrinkage.

I try several different types of needles. You need a needle with a large eye AND a sharp point. If your thread with go through the eye, then it's large enough.
