Thank you very much for both watching and commenting. As a cross-stitcher I like using hoops as you can get your work nice and tight. You can't do that with quilts so I figured my own way of doing them. I am glad it is of some help.

10,000hexies?!?!? Holy cow! And I thought I had patience. I have nothing compared to this! I liked the way you laid it out on the table. It was like a hoop stand, but easier. I thought it interesting how you did the stab stitch method. When I tired it, the back was horrible, but I think this way, it worked be better. Southold live to see this when it's finished! Oh, and a quilt is not done if it's not cat approved. Mine even try to get up in my longarm. They think it's a kitty hammock. Lol Keep up the beautiful work!

Thank you Kesha for the comment and for watching. Making this sort of quilt doesn't require any equipment. I even sewed the binding together by hand on this one as I didn't have a sewing machine. All you need is fabric and thread and paper hexagons and a LOT of patience.

Your work is lovely and colourful! I've never seen anyone actually quilting before and I wanted to see if it was something I could do at home. Using the boxes to keep it up works well and I really like how you start and finish by getting the knots buried in where they aren't going to be seen. I love cross stitching too but I'm afraid I've never had a hoop just stitching in my hand. I am slow but it is very calming and I tend to make little things to use as birthday or Christmas or New baby gifts. Thank you for this lovely video Julie. You are a very good teacher. God bless.v
@juliethornton3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Vera for the wonderful comment. I couldn't cross stitch without a hoop as I would never be able to get it tight enough. Quilting hoops I have found are too large and you can't get the fabric tight enough or in an easy working position. By not using a hoop it is just as tight and easy to work on.
@veemcg36823 жыл бұрын
Yes Julie I'm thinking it's probably only because I only make wee dainty bits that I can manage without a hoop. I am glad I got to see your video before buying a hoop as I thought you could only get wooden ones and now I know there's plastic ones I'll make sure that's what I buy. I most often just do wee flowers on sachets I've made and filled with my home grown lavender or maybe a bookmark or tiny bootees or something. It would take me a month of Sundays to make a bigger thing as I am really slow with most things. The whole point of hobbies for me is to stop me pulling what hair I have left out because I can't get around much on my two feet even though I now can walk a bit again. Love v

@juliethornton3 ай бұрын
The hexagon graph paper you can download for free online or you can buy books of it from ebay or Amazon. The medium Fiskars cutter is no longer available and it did half inch hexagons. If you wan to do larger ones then you can buy them on Amazon or ebay. Etsy is the best place for pre-cut half inch hexagons.

Wow Julie, your quilt is one of the most beautiful I've seen. I am so glad I've found you! I'm about to hand quilt for the first time and I'm a little nervous that I might spoil my very first hexagon piece! I love your approach (I won't be using any hoop or frame), which is kind of no nonsense! LOVE IT! I have instantly subscribed! P.S... There is no volume on your preparation video 😕
@juliethornton4 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your comment. The main thing in quilting hexagons is to decide what bits you are going to quilt as you don't need to quilt every hexagon....as long as there is no more than about 4 inches between quilted bits you should be fine. You can't really go wrong and if you think you have made a mistake you can undo the quilting stitches. Thanks for the heads up about the preparation video. I moved them all from a different channel recently and it must have lost the sound then.

Thank you for your videos. Your quilts are amazing. Do you use same colour thread to quilt it all or do you change colours as you go? Thank you again. Angela
@juliethornton Жыл бұрын
Thank you Angela for watching and commenting. I decide on one colour and stick with it. For this one I used a turquoise quilting thread for the whole thing. You have to look closely to see the tread so it doesn't matter what colour you use and I can't be bothered changing the clolour throughout the quilting process.

Hi Rachel and thanks for joining my channel. I appreciate the support. Thank you also for the compliment on my projects. I try not to start too many projects at once. At the moment I do needle felting as well as quilting. I am currently working on my new underwater theme hexagon patchwork but when I have the money I will hand quilt my huge green one then go back to the other. I find one quilt project at a time is enough for me. Thanks again.

I use them to raise the quilt up so that I can get my hand under there to pull the needle through from the top and then push it back up for the next stitch. Thanks for the comment and for watching.

@juliethornton3 ай бұрын
If you mean the turquoise one that is featured in this video then I don't have a pattern. It is just diamonds with a couple of borders. I have recently completed a smaller diamond quilt for a friend and it shows the process much better in those videos.
@juliethornton3 ай бұрын
I hope that you have also ordered Bottom Line thread from Superior Threads as normal thread will not fit through the eye of the Sue Daley needles. Also, keep in mind that these needles tend to bend which feels strange at first but you soon don't notice it at all. Good luck.

Thank you so much for showing your technique. There isn’t a lot of info about hoopless handquilting and even less about how to quilt in the middle of a bigger quilt. When you say two months to finish, do you have a rough idea of how often you work on it and for how long? Everyday? Hours a day? Just curious. Beautiful quilt altogether!
@juliethornton3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and for watching Brent. I would think that on this quilt I would have spent 2-3 hours a day just quilting it with the odd day not doing any at all. When I do my next one I will keep better track. Thanks.

I'm obsessed with hexies! Hand quilting my first hexie quilt now. Your work is beautiful! I was scared of smaller than 1 inch epp...now I must try it. If the quilt is basted really good is there a need to start quilting in the middle?
@juliethornton3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ashley...thanks for watching and for commenting. I started with 1 inch hexies and now wouldn't use anything bigger than half inch for a large quilt. If it is basted well then there s no nned to start in the middle. I start in the middle in order to get the hardest area out of the way first.
@marti94983 жыл бұрын
I would love You know how long it takes you to make your beautiful quilt?
@juliethornton3 жыл бұрын
This one probably took about 8 months of sewing the hexagons together and about 6 weeks to quilt and bind. I would have spent about a year covering the paper hexagons of an evening while doing other things during the day. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
@qltygrl3187 Жыл бұрын
Do you have a video on how you baste your quilts?
@juliethornton Жыл бұрын
I think there are two of them....my first video was on preparing a quilt for quilting. It is the same quilt in this video so if you go to my videos and have them listed from oldest to newest it will be near the top. There is also one in my how to quilt series which I think is on its own playlist. If you still can't find them then give me a yell. I am sure that basting was part of my tiny house quilts videos as well.
@juliethornton Жыл бұрын
Hi again....I just realised that your actually asked abotu basting and I think I got it all wrong. Are you talking abotu how I cover hexagons....in which case there are several videos on that....or preparing a patchwork for quilting as in joining the backing, backing and top together which is what I answered about in my other reply.
