I haven’t been out there in years, but watching this was fun! I really liked how that one fluke hydroplaned across the surface when you let him go! Thanks for your videos, John. I’m seeing how a lot of what I used to do was just wasting time and I can’t wait to get out again and use some of your techniques.

WONDERFUL video John! Just what I’ve been asking (you) about. I can’t wait to get back out to Montauk to give my larger bucktails a try. Always a pleasure sharing in your success and learning from such.

Thanks John for all the great info. I catch lots of fluke, never get skunked. The only problem is that, I catch a lot of shorts. Maybe it’s the spots I fish at. I don’t have many spots to fish at in Oceanside and the few spots I know are full of shorties. I used a dropshot with a 4inch gulp alive minnow. Maybe I’m targeting them at the wrong time of the year. So far this season I had only 2 keepers out of dozens of fluke. Thanks again and tight lines!.

Great video as always. I've been on trips where bluefish strips saved the day and put a couple keepers in the boat when nothing else worked. And sometimes they haven't worked at all. Definitely a good option to have, though.

Hey. Great video. Can you say more about how you modified the Tsunami 7" H rod? You cut 4" from the tip? How do you do this? Do you do anything to change the position of the other guide under the tip guide? A video on modifying rods in this way would be great.

John, in NJ I've seen its very typical during heavy current to cast up current, then work the bait back to the boat. Then when you're under the boat, you recast. This way you can use a lighter bucktail. Have you ever tried this with any success? A lot of ppl swear by it, but I've never tried.
@JohnSkinnerFishing7 жыл бұрын
Have not tried it, but one downside of doing that over deep water is you would lose a lot of fishing time going up and down so often.
@Engineer_Heathen7 жыл бұрын
John Skinner Fishing good point. I know a lot of ppl that swear it catches more fish. But like you said, in deep water you lose a lot of fishing time going up and down constantly.
@Engineer_Heathen7 жыл бұрын
John Skinner Fishing John, just wanted to give you an update. Yesterday I tried the casting method that I was explaining to you. I was out with two other guys who were vertical jigging while I was casting. I caught 8 keepers, they caught 1 combined. We were in 75 feet of water, and I was holding with a 3 oz jig no problem, and they were struggling to hold with 6oz. Give it a try with a spinning rod next time the drift is too fast.
@brendanwoerner33526 жыл бұрын
Engineer that could have been slack current the reason why you were holding with 3oz. Or the wind was light with current on that day. I pick my party boat trips according to tide, moon and winds so it works in my favor for me in NJ. Sometimes guys doing the cast upcurrent works well but other times it’s more tangles than anything else. Congrats on your success. I only use that method during slack tide.

That annoying bird reminded me of a fishing trip in San Diego I think November 1981. Business conference that my buddy and I skipped the morning seminars and went on a party boat. Our rods had Hi-Lo hooks. Don't remember the fish we caught but...after a while dozens of ocean ducks and seagulls must have been very hungry and as we were bringing a fish to the surface a duck would dive and grab the second baited hook. Likewise, as you brought a fish into the boat a seagull would grab the baited other hook. The mayhem caused by these birds as they attempted to fly away with a hook in it's mouth was crazy. Crossed lines and all. Felt sorry for the mates as they tried to unhook the birds. Sadly, a number of the birds did not survive. I think the captain finally gave up and we headed in. Most insane fishing trip I've ever been on and no alcohol was involved.

But it was probably still better than the morning business seminars.

I'm about to buy a Classic H on your recommendation. Could you tell us again how you cut the rod tip & what you did about replacing the tip, so I don't have to search through all your videos? Should I just buy a Classic XH? Thank you again for the great videos & all the information.
@JohnSkinnerFishing7 жыл бұрын
Here's the cutting video. Any decent tackle shop will replace the tip for $5-$10. Or you can look at "rod tip repair kit" at BPS and then be able to DIY. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXOvq618hLh2mck

Hi John, I fish for Flukes in Martha's Vineyard, I use 3oz bucktail and Gulp Swimming Mullet. I have chance with flukes but sea robins keep hitting the tail of my Gulp Swimming Mullet which make it useless. Do u have any suggestion to avoid sea robins or other bait stealer?

Nice video as usual thanks for sharing. I thought with 6oz bucktails u would go with heavier line then #15 but i guess u kept the thiner line because of the heavy current to help keeping it down
@JohnSkinnerFishing7 жыл бұрын
Exactly. 15# is a little light for that rod, but the thinner the line the less weight you'll need to stay down with.

If there is a coursing tide and no wind, that drift sock will not help keep over a spot on the bottom. You'll just be dragged along with the tide.
