I know that it is hard to tell, but there is a highway lying under all that water and debris. The only hint of the roadway is at the 4:00 mark, where you can see the white lane edge line. Bayfront Highway, State Route 19.

I lived in Hilo, Pepeekeo, & Puna (Hawaiian Paradise Park) in the 1990's...&, I used to love to surf 🏄♂️ Bayfront...under the right conditions, it's an unbelievably great & super long left...I surfed Bayfront during that similar huge NE swell in the 1990's that others have recalled here...one left I caught from outside doubled-up as it peeled down the line in front of the breakwall fronting the roadway...mostly, when that starts to happen, you just kick out & paddle back out...this time, I decided to keep riding the wave & I just prayed I wouldn't fall off & be hurled up against the break wall...fortunately I made the wave, but by then I was already so far down from the outside lineup that I decided to just paddle all the way down to the beach park & get out.. I'll never forget that long walk back up Bayfront with big rocks strewn all over the road & huge set waves breaking way outside...that was one of my most amazing days of surfing ever...I'll always love Hilo & the Big Island & the people who live there

Up till the 1946 tsunami there were railroad tracks along this stretch which carried sugar from the different plantations along the Hamakua Coast to be shipped out of the Hilo docks. After the tsunami wrecked the railroad it shut down and sugar was transported only by trucks. To avoid having the huge cane haul trucks using Kamehameha Avenue through downtown Hilo, the Bayfront Highway was constructed by 1950. And yes, it’s had storm waves ash over it exactly like this multiple times in the past. The sugar industry is long gone, so the reason for the Bayfront Highway to still exist is also long gone.

No, it is not "normal in winter." I drive that road almost every day. It's normal to get big swells that spray the road in winter, maybe some rocks pushed onto it. But personally, I've never seen it flooded like that.
@jamesmurphy21922 жыл бұрын
Happened once in the 90s, can't remember exactly when. I went for a run on Bayfront hwy one morning and was amazed to see it completely buried with black sand and rocks. Soccer fields were flooded as well. Very rare occurrence

0:57 and 1:13 don't feel bad for the County workers b/c Bayfront Highway is a STATE road. Lived in Hilo a long time myself, surfed Bayfront when I could, which back then was pretty seldom. I understand it's a lot shallower now than it used to be, with all the gravel coming down the river. Having seen large sharks pulled from the water at the small lighthouse at the foot of Waianuenue Avenue, I would NEVER boogie board there. 1:31 "never seen it that high" well you shoulda seen the swell of December 1965 that largely wiped out the North Shore of Oahu. 4:26 "job security for the County guys" is another moron that doesn't know the difference btw State Highways (baseyard 50 Makaala Street) and County (where?) You want outer reefs? Jump on your tow-in rig and surf Blonde Reef, on which the Breakwater is built, best place to watch for the boatless among us is Scenic Point, almost to Honoli'i.
