Nice!!! I found a nice little head lamp for my wife at Harbor Freight, it used 3 AAA batteries (boo!!!). I 3D printed a little 2 cell 18650 battery box and installed one of those cheap ebay battery charging boards which do a pretty good job keeping the batteries healthy. (my friend runs a computer repair shop so I have access to plenty of old laptop 18650's :-) It worked so well for her I made one for me! (She runs a dog rescue here in our small town and we have anywhere from 5 - 15 dogs we walk each night so a good headlamp is a must!!!) Thanks Mr Clive, always enjoy your videos :-)

Howdy Clive! If you like to wear baseball-style caps, get one with the rear size adjustment made of a cloth band and a small buckle, or the Velcro tabs. Remove the elastic headband from the lamp and affix it to the back of your cap with the adjustment strap. Now you have your head-mounted lamp with you all the time. Flip your cap around 180 degrees and switch it on. I discovered this when out fishing on the ocean, going from daylight to night time. It works great. Thank you my friend!

I personally think headtorches that uses a 18650 lithium ion cells are slightly better, but you may not want to take that apart, the generic ones that clasohlson sells, for some reason they dont seem to sell it in UK. The item number for it is 36-6346. What I personally like about it is the fact that it can use and charge any of the random 18650 cells that you've got around, be it from old laptops or old power banks etc. Seems like they sell it everywhere but in UK for whatever reason, probably some local regulations or something along the line.

Main issue I see with this head torch for camping is, it's only decent in warm weather. A little bit below freezing and that lithium cell is probably gonna leave you in the dark, when I'm fall or winter camping I have to have my phone and powerbank in my sleeping bag to make sure they don't get too cold and die. It's also a relatively low wattage LED so if it's on over a beanie or a helmet it's probably gonna get cold enough for the cell to fail while it's turned on and in use, unlike brighter ones that make enough heat to keep themselves warm. That's one of several reasons all my favorite lights run on NiMH AAs or AAAs, along with being able to change them when they go flat without needing a charger.

using this for a year now for fishing and repairs, very pleased ... alltho I dimmed it down with a piece of kapton tape, the white light was too much for night time fishing. two minor issues: a) off by button forces to cycle through brightness, would have been better to let it remember a chosen brightness even when not using the no-touch mode. b) charging on a PC USBport triggers constantly the Plug&Play routine, without finding anything of course, very annoying for someone used to charge all his USB devices on the Desktop Hub.

@ BigClive, i ordered one too but it only has two brightness settings. my board has revision 3 stamped on the back but is identical other than the silk screan. Can you show us how to modify it to a 620nm RED. I need a headtorch for flying when i land my eyes have adjusted but need to read the after landing checklist, and it would be so much easier to wave my hand instead of trying to hold a torch, checklist and operate switches etc.. from what i gather the RED 3535 cree uses 2.65v not the measured 3v so i guess thats what the resistors for, unless the driver adjusts voltage to fix the current at 1A.

Got myself one of these, it doesn't even have the "low" which I never use anyways, one less button press to turn it off is a plus! Just opened mine up, it doesn't have that middle bracket, the cell is fatter and has 1200mAh printed, the foam is on the other side, between the cell and board. Only 3 complaints about this little light, 1) the headband feels "plasticky" on the forehead (I swapped for the headband of that other model that you also featured that shorted while not in use, it may be dangerous but the headband sure is nicer, feels more like cotton), that little usb cap prevents normal cellphone charger plugs from going in all the way, I had to find a usb cable with a much longer plug (mine didn't come with it's own cable), and finally the infra-red detects objects way too far, when I bring something in for a closer look or bend down close to the object the light goes out.

Bought two last week, to add to the one I bought ages ago that's still going strong, despite much use in the workplace, most days. (The angle adjustment ratchet is starting to wear) All three have the gasket and the larger battery. Sold branded as Core Lighting in the UK. The PCB is slightly different layout to Clives, but functions are the same. Main LED is on it's own wee aluminium board to act as a heatsink? Would love to find a way to just have on and off, instead of the three brightneses.... The infra red function is very useful, but seems to drain the battery quite a bit faster than just turning it on and off.

I think a modern head torch should have a wide beam so that you don't need to move your head around to see something. A very narrow beam like this is a royal pain when working under a vehicle for example. If you're bicycling or something, then a narrow beam is good so that you can see far ahead.

At least on this one, you have to go out of your way to turn it on. No strobing when trying to get back around to high. The strobing is on a lot of head torches because they are using chips meant for emergency hand torches. An SOS mode on a head torch does make sense though. I could see a lot of situations where you need a head torch and having that could save your life.

Actually, it is an improper SOS mode. Proper SOS is more like a runon version of the letters SOS with no inter-letter spacing as the letters are simply a procode mnemonic for memory purposes. So while this flashes the distinct letters SOS as . . . - - - . . . ; a proper SOS would be . . . - - - . . . (Note the shortened period between the third dit and the first (fourth) dah, and the long gap between the third (sixth) dah and the immediately following dit). So if you see three distinct short flashes followed by three distinct long flashes with an extra space period between those two groups then they goofed as it should initial look like four consecutive flashes, the fourth (long) flash having only a short preceding space before the long spaces occur after each of the three long flashes (and the reverse for the final S).
