In this video I show how I troubleshoot a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) problem on a Honda. In this case it was a SRS code 61-10, which is an open in the driver's seat belt buckle switch. This is a very common problem on many Honda models.
SRS Airbag warning: SRS Airbags are a critical safety component and can deploy with enough force to seriously injury someone or worse, even with the battery disconnected. I do NOT recommend anyone work on a vehicle SRS Airbag system unless that person has been properly trained. This video is for entertainment only.

Guys - if it's just a seat belt issue causing the light, should be covered under Honda's lifetime seat belt warranty. Just brought mine in (2004 CR-V) and dealer confirmed. Great video though!

Thank you for this video! Pulled the 61-10 code with my inexpensive blue driver, but didn't know how to fix it. It did turn out to be as simple as spraying a healthy dose of contact cleaner a few times down into the seat belt switch. And thanks for the warnings to beware of potentially causing the airbags to go off in newer models and giving me the confidence that me messing with the seat belt switch in this 2005 Honda was ok to do.

Amazing. My Honda Odyssey 2006 was acting up with the SRS dashboard light. Today I tackled the issue with some investigation after watching this video. Sure enough, if I started the Car with Buckle in, 6 seconds later the Fault Indicator went off. As soon as I pulled the buckle out, it came back. Exactly as described (open condition, not Buckle out). Little bit of Contact cleaner, Q-tip swirl and a blast of Air. Instantly things went back to normal. I feel safe Driving knowing the SRS is fully functional. THANK YOU for this video.

You totally nailed it Big Dog50001!!! This happened with my 2004 Honda Accord EX and I took it to the dealer because I knew the seatbelts were covered (just like you mentioned in your video). After 1.5 hrs of waiting they come back to tell me: 'it's not the seat belt but it's the module that controls the airbags. Your airbags won't deploy if this light is on - which is really dangerous; and to fix it, it's going to cost $800+ and that might not even fix it.' WTF?? They definitely tried the scare tactic and weasel $800 out of me. Thank you for this helpful video!!!

I bought two Honda elements for delivery vehicles.. a2003and a 2004. Is it safe to spray the contact cleaner in the seat belt switches like you did? I thought they had pre tensioners on these years and I don’t want to deploy the airbags for sure… I’m a mechanic but haven’t been schooled on the airbags except to remove the battery cables from the battery before working on anything airbags…. I also have to change a broken clock spring in my 2001 Jeep Wrangler…

I have this problem in my '05 Element. I bought it used in June 2020 and the previous owner did what you did to "clean" the driver's buckle. It worked for a while but the SRS light came back on again. I contacted my Honda dealer (I'm in Canada) and they said its not covered under warranty and a new replacement is over $200. What a joke! I'll try contacting Honda Canada directly but I'm not hopeful.

@@adityaruparel3320 No warranty and I confirmed this when I called the dealership to schedule the air bag recall. So, I just removed the buckle cover and inspected it. I think the previous owner just reset the light and called it a day and didn't clean anything. I blasted the interior with electrical contact cleaner. There was a problem with the latch not completely releasing due to some dust buildup thus causing the micro switch inside to not fully open or close. It works as it should now.

@BigDog50001
@BigDog50001 5 жыл бұрын
I spoke about this in video some, they should be able to tell you if its a warranty repair. Most Honda dealers will replace the buckle for no charge if the vehicle has the lifetime warranty on the seat belts. I would try and have it fixed under warranty if it was my car.

Hi it's me again. I message you on your other video and you replied. I appreciate that and that fixed my airbag light but my car's battery kept draining overnight. I scanned it again and a new code came up and this time it is an ABS code 61-11 which is "Power source failure for ECU (Low voltage)" according to my Bluedriver. Any thoughts about this?
@BigDog50001
@BigDog50001 3 жыл бұрын
A low voltage DTC is most likely a symptom of the battery drain issue (and not the cause). There is most likely a module or some other component that is staying powered up when it should be off (or asleep). Troubleshooting for a parasitic drain on the battery is probably the next step.

I think my airbag went off but didn't actually come out when I was driving 90 on the highway, because out of nowhere I heard a really loud hissing noise. Checked the engine and nothing had blown. My is a Honda 2011 and I got a scanner to check and it was coming with the srs code 27-10 which is the same as yours. "open seat tensioner etc" the light isn't on but I don't want to risk leaving it. What spray did you use to get it working?
@BigDog50001
@BigDog50001 2 жыл бұрын
Are you sure of that code, could it have been 21-10? In either case, the problem you describe is an issue with the Seat Belt Tensioner, which is definitely different than a problem with the Seat Belt Buckle Switch (the buckle is part of diagnostic circuit and the tensioner is part of the trigger circuit). The Seat Belt Tensioners are located in the door "B" pillars and have a small explosive charge inside them, they are fired by the SRS control unit in order to tighten the seat belts during a collision. *I would recommend having someone who knows these SRS systems look at it due to the possibility of serious injury*. Wiring issues can definitely cause these trouble code. A problem with the tensioner itself usually means the entire seat belt would need to be replaced (it is possible some dealers may cover this under the seat belt warranty but that might be stretch).

Tell the time frame to let it dry! I did this spray and it seemed NOT TO WORK but after waiting over ONE SOLID HOUR and my mechanic clearing the "61-10" code it seems to have worked. If you are going to post a tutorial, state ALL of the facts like the drying time frame. We'll see if this really worked if the SRS light stays out after an hour and a half wait for the spray to totally dry out inside the buckle.
