Experimenting with wild mice in mazes. Mice are amazingly good at traversing mazes, it turns out, so I had to make the maze more complicated. But the shrew reigned victorious woodgears.ca/farm/mouse_maze.html

@EmeEve5 жыл бұрын
Y’know what you should do? You should make those kinds of maxes that have a big center. Step 1: make a maze with a center that has a entrance and an exit. Step 2: place a door flap at both of the doorways(?) at the center so that the mouse can enter the the maze and head into the center but not exit the center through the entrance. The mouse will be forced to get out of the maze through the other door flap that will lead them to the exit of the maze. This will prevent them from coming in and out through only one route. They’ll need to learn how to enter and exit the center.

I love how the Mouse took one look at the two passage ways and was just immediately like "Nope, this ain't worth it"

Matt, use a UV light. Mice leave a urine trail so they will always find there way out of your maze. The mouse urine reflects light in the UV spectrum. Interesting fact, predator bird species, like falcons, can see in the UV range and see the trail from the air making mice easy prey.

Kawitamamayi . That was exactly my thought. Well i didn't know the left an urine trail, but they definitely are doing something with smell.

Hope he sees this, that would be a super interesting theory to test/prove.

not really when he changes the layout making the trail useless

Closing the exit while a mouse is in there and opening one on a different place would be interesting
@jordanfry51386 жыл бұрын
Leon Tarmann cool idea, I'm worried that either a: the temporary closure of the original would be difficult. Or b: the mouse would reach its limit and give up

You should see the movie "cube" then..

Hello fellow name-sharer, I, too, was surprised by the mice learning their way around the maze. Until I remembered a conversation I had with an exterminator. He told me that the "instant death traps" he used would kill the mice immediately, and the reason he used them was that if the mice were to live for a while, they would automatically coat the trap with pheromons signaling distress, making the trap unattractive for future mice. I assume that the mice panicing in the individual dead ends infused the maze with basically road signs that would show routes to success, leaving smells of "food here", "no food anymore", and the smell of relief and panic. Therefore it may be less about memorizing but about leaving figurative bread crumbs.

It would be funny if the shrew makes it all the way, eats, gets fatter and can't fit to go back.

That shrew is used to the maze having a roof.. you should take off the roof and see if it realizes it can just jump over or if it keeps doing the maze
@TrareNgyenFiong6 жыл бұрын
Good idea. But I think the shrew will realize it soon
@aryore24116 жыл бұрын
It actually might not realise it quickly, the shrew seems to be very good at following an established pattern but is slow to respond to change.
@isaccaiah6 жыл бұрын
I would like to mention that a few times the shrew tried climbing the maze from the outside, it's just hard to notice since the video being shown is very fast, but I figure since it tried climbing on top of the maze it'd find out relatively quickly.
