XF10(28mm), the little brother of the X100V(focal length: 35mm) is a pretty compact camera, just the same size as the Ricoh GRIII. The tilting screen is a bonus over the GRIII design. Both cameras are still compact. Wondering how Fuji could combine the design of the XF10 and X70 together in one camera: joystick, pop-up evf (like the RX1R, RX100, GX5 II, or an external EVF as option), 2 FLs like the GR (28mm, 40mm), tilting screen, PASM (XF10) dial over the the SS dials, but keep the Exposure dial/Customized Dial (unless a double SS/ISO dials like the X100V), mic + headphones jacks if possible, IBIS like the Ricoh?, aperture/focus ring(s) or just a control rings... Dreaming ? If they can come back with a "X80/XF20", and keep it that compact and the price lower than the GR3... wondering how it will work for Fuji. What do you think?

I recently purchased the X70. It truly is an amazing tool for street photography. I came from an x-pro1 so the switch was fairly easy as the menu functions just about the same. The autofocus is plenty fast and I actually enjoy using the touch screen to focus and capture a shot. So far the experience has been it is a very unassuming camera even more so than the x-pro1 plus lens. This helps my comfort level as much as the subjects I am trying to photograph. The Classic Chrome film simulation is a treat. I find I am using it almost as often as B&W. I went back and forth trying to decide between this camera and the Ricoh GR II. Both are more than adequate for street style shooting. It was the fact that the jpegs are so good on the Fuji that ultimately swayed me. I don't mind working with raw and do feel the end result can be worth it but in most cases the jpegs are all I need with this camera. Thanks for the time you take to review and share your experience and knowledge.

+Jay King congrats on the X70. Yes everything you've observed I agree. The GR is also amazing but it's a different little monster. Touch focus and shoot is a cool tool, as is the articulating screen. Have fun and happy shooting!

+bigheadtaco After spending a few more days I was able to figure out the how to set up a Ricoh snap focusing equivalent. In manual mode it can show you a measured focal distance line (you can choose between feet or meters). As you change the aperture and move the focus ring it indicates where focus starts and the distance it covers. The cool thing is if you need to use autofocus quickly in manual mode you can press the AE/AL button on the back and it will automatically focus per your previous auto focus settings. That button is also helpful in changing your manual focus distance quickly if the situation calls for it.
@bigheadtaco8 жыл бұрын
Jay King yes, many photographers use this set up even with their DSLRs, separating focus from the shutter button to the back focus button. Although this system is cool, there is another cool feature of the snap focus that no other camera can do. Even in AF mode, half press will AF and then full press is the shutter. However, if you press straight down with the GR, no matter what mode you're in (AF or manual) it will bypass it and go straight to your designated snap focus distance. This is very cool in an emergency and you need to take a quick shot. But the method you described is how I always set up all my Fuji's since it has such a nice horizontal focus and DOF scale in both AF and MF modes. Thanks for your comment!

What can I say, Take? Another great video. When I first started getting "in to" photography a year ago, your videos helped get me started. You also inspired me to try street photography and I bought my Ricoh GR II after watching you go shoot with yours. Fast forward a year, and Postal Service willing, a X-70 will be at my doorstep tomorrow. Much like you, I'm keeping my GR II, but I'm looking forward to putting the Fuji through its paces; if it can combine the things I love about Fuji imaging with the things I love about shooting street photography with my GR II, it'll be a winner. Ken

+Ken Schuller thanks for sharing. The GR and X70 are both in the same category but will appeal to different crowds and situations. When I'm with my wife or family, the articulating screen is great for group shots and selfies. When I'm by myself in hardcore shooting mode, it's the GR. Have fun!

+bigheadtaco I have a dad (me, 47) + stepdaughter (24) date coming up - she's been itching to learn photography. I'm going to start her with my GR and me on the Fuji, then we'll switch off at some point. When we wrap up, I'll walk her through some Lightroom basics. Bracing myself to help her get her first camera - I know it's just a matter of time. :)

Happy New Year, BigHeadTaco! As a Fujifilm X-T3 landscape and product photographer, I am extremely pleased with the image quality I get from this camera, combined with the stellar, sharp Fujinon XF optics. However, I am researching a small, light "travel camera", as I don't want to expose my X-T3 system to the vagaries of landscape photography in a beach/ocean setting. For that very limited, occasional use, I was considering such cameras as the Fuji X70, Sony a6000 kit, Panasonic LX100II, or possibly the Oly OMD-EM1 II, or Sony RX100V. However, based on other test reviews of the X70 (or even the fixed 28mm lens of the X-T100x series), more than one have said that the fixed 23 or 28mm fujinon lens just is not that sharp, especially when compared to that on the Ricoh GR series. My MAIN criteria are image SHARPNESS and detail retention, and ability to retain such detail when possibly printed to 20x24". (Thus, my hesitancy to go m4/3.). Plus, I'd like to keep total budget for both camera and lens to around $1000. And, FYI, I'm a stills guy, so don't shoot video. Based on this, which system would you recommend for maximum sharpness/compact form factor? Thank you!
@bigheadtaco6 жыл бұрын
How about the Fujifilm X-T20 or X-E3 and the XF18mm or XF27mm? The X70 is getting older and would recommend something newer if you can afford it. If not, the X70 is decent, although this generation sensor-processor combo had some smudging issues with fine detail, especially in landscape type photographs with fine details like grass or sand.
@Rnder729 жыл бұрын
Thanks bigheadtaco for this preview. Looking forward to the production follow up video. I am a new GR II owner (less than a month) extremely pleased with the shooting experience (generous front grip and rear right area and the logic of the controls, it resonated with me almost instantaneously) The IQ is great, looking forward to see how badly it get trounced by the X70 IQ wise. For me IQ is not the end all, it is about having fun and efficiently getting the shot that I see, so far the GR II is doing it for me. That said I will definitely check out the X70 when it hits the shelves (minor case of gear nerdness).
@bigheadtaco9 жыл бұрын
+Rick N yes thanks for your comment. The Nikon D5 will outshoot the X-Pro 2 but there's more reason why you pick one camera over another other than IQ. The X70 will have better AF and high ISO IQ, but remember the base ISO on that sensor is 200, where the GR is 100. This means that all things being equal, the GR will have better low ISO performance, which is a good thing. I've done family portrait sessions with the GR with my full flash gear and the pictures were amazing! Also the black and white jpegs and the converted RAW files into monochrome on the GR are very film-like. The Fujifilm has always had average black and white images out of camera. All said and done, I've been shooting the GR since 1998, and as amazing as the X70 is, I'm keeping my GR. I don't chase after specs. Thanks again for your comment. The GR 2 is amazing. I shot with it in Hong Kong and my best images came from the GR for my style of shooting.

+Michelle T. Delos Reyes that's really a personal decision based on your shooting style, skill level and priorities. Feature for feature, the X70 looks better on paper that is a certainty. However, the GR has other features that street photographers love like SNAP focus, more comfortable and spacious ergonomics, standard DNG RAW files and a slightly more compact and much lighter design.

Does this mean that Fuji will not update the X30 then? I was hoping for an X40 with APS-C (maybe 1 inch) sensor.. more than the 2/3's in the X30. I love the X30, but the size does not make it a pocket EDC, and the sensor size could be bigger (maybe too big an ask as these two parameters are competing), and a touch screen for focus and shutter release.
@bigheadtaco9 жыл бұрын
+Jeffrey Wong it would not be surprising if they did since this segment is making a slow death, although I would be extremely disappointed. They would need to update the 2/3" sensor to at least 1" and the price will have to jump up to around the same price as the X70, which is fine. The fact it has a zoom and an EVF will put the new X30 in a different category that will attract a different type of photographer. Lets hope for a new X40!!

Nice review, again! I just want to ask: what about the body? The main thing that disappoint me in Ricoh GR is the dust factor. We know about all the complains - the dust on the sensor of GR (including mine). And when we talk about pocketable the problem with the dust is inevitable. So, is the body of X 70 is dust and water protected?
@bigheadtaco9 жыл бұрын
+Ivan Maranov all cameras with built-in non-removable lenses will suffer with dust once it finds its way inside between the lens and sensor. There is no sensor vibration dust removal system since there's nowhere for the dust to go once it comes off the sensor, except back onto the sensor or lens. It is an inevitable consequence. The old film point and shoots you can open it from the back film chamber and clean out any dust. You can't do that with modern point and shoots unfortunately.... I've had no issues with dust myself, even though everyone talks about it. Perhaps it's the lens hood I attach that helps keep dust out. Plus I use the official case.

Hey Take, do you have problem with the ricoh gr with the lens sticking out when it powers on? it's likely to be accidentally pressed. In this case i think x70 wins. but given the gr has slightly better image quality (i think), do you think the build quality & design of x70 are far superior than gr? Keep up the great videos. Thanks
@bigheadtaco8 жыл бұрын
+Nickolas Lim both the GR and X70 are built well, although I will give the slight edge to the X70. However, ergonomics the GR is vastly superior. Lens quality the GR is king, as per DPReview's latest X70 full review. It confirmed my findings that the GR is almost too sharp, causing excess moiré, although you can reduce it in-camera or in post. The X70 is soft wide open.

for street photography do you recommend 35mm lens (50mm eq) or more wider ?
@bigheadtaco9 жыл бұрын
+Franky Junior you have to find your own style. Look at the photographers you like and find out what focal length they use. I prefer 28mm, which is wide but it's more photojournalistic. 35mm and 50mm is probably the most popular focal lengths, but even guys like Saul Leiter used 75 and 90mm lenses. Amazing street images. Find your own style and then work on developing it. It's a great journey to take...

Pre ordered mine too. but if its not made in Japan I am returning it and just get a used x100t instead.
@mrz13428 жыл бұрын
Hi I have very important question to ask you: since focal length of x70 lens at eq.28, 35, 50mm is electronic and not native/real as eq.35 in x100 (and eq.28, 50 wcl/tcl), are the quality of result photos (jpeg and raw both) same for printing and exhibition presentation? at least i would like to be sure, eq.28 in x70 quality is the same as eq.35 in x100t, then i will be able to crop what i want in photoshop! pls advise.
@bigheadtaco8 жыл бұрын
The X70's 28mm equivalent focal length is the native angle of view and is at full resolution. The digital crop to get 35mm and 50mm equiv can only be used in JPEG mode since it uses an upscaling technology so you do not lose any megapixels. However, this is not the same as optically zooming and the quality will suffer. The X100 has optical convertors to get a wide and tele equivalent of 28mm and 50mm. The X70 currently only has a wide adapter that gives you a 21mm equivalent, which is very good. I hope they will make a tele converter as well. In terms of image quality of the X70 versus the X100T, they both use the exact same sensor (the X100S as well, but the original X100 uses a different sensor and processor), the only difference will be the lens. The lens is half the image quality so a good lens is important. Comparing the 2 lenses, I would say that the X100 has a better corrected and sharper lens versus the X70's. The X70 is also 1 stop slower at f/2.8 versus the X100's F/2, which doesn't necessarily affect image quality, but it is a factor in lens design. With printing and post processing workflow, it really depends on how big you are printing, how your original images are exposed, if you're tripod shooting or hand holding your shots, how you post process. Both cameras produce 16mp images and can be printed to large sizes as long as you process your images that are optimized to the print size.
@mrz13428 жыл бұрын
+bigheadtaco many thank for your technical answer. definitely they will make zoom teleconvertor for x70 soon. but you belive the lens of x100 is sharper and better quality than x70 and this is very important! because we can use optical wide teleconvertor and we can wait for zoom teleconvertor but is not possible to change the lens on x70 for better one! do you think this lens as native 28eq. is enough sharp to take photo and magnimize and crop it in photoshop with high quality without losing mpx for printing?

What do you guys think of the digital converter, that surprised me but I need to really test it's worth it. This thing would be useful, might swap my x30 for it.
@bigheadtaco8 жыл бұрын
do you mean the ability to digitally zoom? It's actually not bad, as long as you're okay with shooting JPEGs only. The digital crop will still be of higher resolution and lower noise than the X30 due to the much larger sensor, but it is always best to optically zoom. However, the option is there if you need it.
@DamianBrown8 жыл бұрын
Naturally, but it does seem like an interesting option. For me the sensor and vlog options would make it more useful to me. Yes the digital zoom, fuji claimed to me it's not a simple optical v digital zoom deal but a step up.
@bigheadtaco8 жыл бұрын
Damian Brown yes, the software actually upscales the cropped zoom image and maintains the 16mp resolution. I tested it and it's pretty good, although you are limited by shooting RAW only. If you are primarily a JPEG shooter, then it's no big deal.

Fantastic & informative video! I am torn between purchasing a used X100T or the new X70. I do like to do selfie shots when traveling, so the X70's articulating screen is appealing. However, I do like the idea of the X100T's viewfinder. I've been wanting a Fuji badly for that simulated film look. A lot of my travel photos were done on an old Pentax film compact & I love the retro look of them. Any suggestions?
@bigheadtaco9 жыл бұрын
+Paul Anthony both great cameras. If you can not shoot without a viewfinder, obviously the X100T is your choice. If however you find you can live without it and are good at shooting via an LCD screen, then the X70 is a great option. Because I take a lot of iPhone images, plus I have the Ricoh GR, I am very use to not using a viewfinder so I would be okay with the X70. However for serious shooting, the X100T for sure
@paulv84539 жыл бұрын
I guess what I don't understand is, if Fuji wanted a camera in between the X100T & the X30, why did they make it so small to where they couldn't fit a viewfinder on it? What were they thinking? The X30 has everything I want for the right price but really wanted a fixed prime. Thank you. : )

Paul Anthony I know exactly what you mean, but I think it's just a different category they were going after, which is the Ricoh GR market. I hope the X30 upgrade will come soon, but it will most likely have a 1" sensor like the Sony and Canon. It's not a huge market for them but it would secure a competitive product within the market, although it will overlap the X70 in terms of price-point.

+bigheadtaco I think that I may have figured out what system I'm going with. I've been struggling with it for days now but Instead of pairing the more expensive X-T1 & a X100T together, I am going with the X-T10 (silver) wth the 35mm F/2 WR silver lens (silver) & the X70 (silver). The X-T10 for portraiture & the X70 for my travel & EDC. Of course, I'll be investing the the 56mm F1.2 in the near future for that nice Bokeh. Thank you for all the videos. I'm sure that it wont stop there. I'll probably get the X-series camera. I'd just have to hide it from my wife. LOL

Thanks for the review! Can you use the touch screen to focus while on manual focus mode? With the XT-1 or X100T, I like to use manual focus while using the AF-L lock button. Curious if the touch focus can serve as the AF-L (without the focus lock on shutter half-press).
@bigheadtaco9 жыл бұрын
+Clyde Siazon in manual mode, the onscreen shot/focus/off menu is still there. However, only the shot mode works, which means it focuses and shoots for you. However, like all the other X series camera, in manual focus mode, you can press the rear AE-L/AF-L button to autofocus for you. This is the preferred mode for street for me so there's no lag when taking a picture after determining the distance you wish to shoot at.
@iLuveKatsup9 жыл бұрын
+bigheadtaco Thanks for the reply. Yes that's right, I use the AF-L while on manual like you mentioned. But it would be great to touch focus in lieu of the AF-L. Touch focus only for the camera to refocus on half shutter doesn't make sense. IMO

@valvoletta9 жыл бұрын
Great review, how would you compare it to the Lumix LX100? Pros and cons?
@bigheadtaco9 жыл бұрын
+valvoletta the LX100 is more like the Sony RX100 series as an all-in-one point and shoot with zoom. The X70 is more like the Ricoh GR where it has a large sensor in a compact camera but at the cost of not having an EVF. IQ will be better on the X70, but the LX100 (and RX100) will have better video, zoom lens, built in EVF and more functions aimed towards the average user. The X70, like the GR can be used as a casual point and shoot, but my guess is that many pros and enthusiasts will use it as a serious tool for image making. If you need an EVF then the Fujifilm X100T is the perfect solution.

Three questions of importance to street photographers: What is the fastest minimum shutter speed allowed for auto-ISO? Is it 1/500 like the X-T10/X-T1 or 1/125 like the X100 series? Does the electronic focus distance scale have a hyperfocal indicator? Do you have to readjust focus distance every time you switch aperture in order to stay in hyperfocal? It seems the Ricoh has a real advantage here by being able to easily toggle zone/hyperfocal distances with its snap focus.
@olivertwisted9 жыл бұрын
+Ryan Oliver If Fuji is reading this, your software engineers should consider adding an auto-hyperfocal option when in manual focus mode. This option would automatically set the focus distance to hyperfocal for any given aperture. This can all be done via firmware.
@bigheadtaco9 жыл бұрын
+Ryan Oliver the X70 has 3 auto ISO settings, all of which allows for a maximum of 1/500th sec max shutter speed. No hyperfocal indicator on the distance scale, just the focus point distance and the depth of field coverage based on the aperture you are at. It is reasonably accurate.

Is the silver portion of the camera metal or painted to look metal like the X-T1?
@bigheadtaco9 жыл бұрын
+Roy Louden the top portion of the X-T1 is metal, unless I'm misunderstanding what portion you are referring to. As for the X70, the majority of the exterior is made from metal.
@RoyLouden9 жыл бұрын
+bigheadtaco The X-T1 is metal, but is painted to look more silver than the alloy is that they make the camera with. Was wondering if that is the same with the new X70.
@bigheadtaco9 жыл бұрын
Roy Louden Oh I didn't know this but it makes sense. It's cheaper to paint the finish on versus polishing the bare metal until it looks perfect. Thanks for the info. Great video as always Big head ?:) Quick question if I may. I'm pretty new to photography and I have just bought this camera. When I transfer a photos taken on the x70 to my iphone I notice that the file size is far, far smaller than if i was to copy from SD card to my computer. Does this make a difference in quality? If I wanted to make a print from my Iphone for example instead of using the file on my computer. I hope That makes sense ?:) Thanks so much in advance buddy.
@bigheadtaco8 жыл бұрын
If you transferred the images via wifi, the image is made smaller. If you want to transfer in full size, you have to go into settings, wifi and then in the options make sure it says to transfer the full image size. It is always best to work with the full file, especially if you end up cropping your images.

Alright just pre-ordered. One more question, is this made in Japan like the other X series Fuji?
@bigheadtaco9 жыл бұрын
+Thomas Yi not all X series cameras are made in Japan, typically only the top-of-the line products. My sample was made in China, meaning it was assembled in China. You have to remember like most modern electronic devices, parts come from all over the world, and then the final assembly is completed. The sensor is probably made by Toshiba or Sony (Fujifilm sold their sensor division last year), the processor is probably in house, the lens is made in Japan, etc. It would be nice if everything was made in Japan but it is typically reserved for the highest margin cameras. Again, I can not confirm where the production model will be built, but my pre-production sample was made in China.

Great review! But I think you should have compared the X-A2 with an 18mm (27mm equivalent) lens instead of the 27mm (40mm equivalent) lens. Yes, the 18mm isn't a true "pancake," but it shoots about the same field of view as the X70. I have an X-A1, and am debating between buying an X70 ... or just getting the 18mm lens for my X-A1. There is a big price difference.

regarding video capabiilty, what do you mean when you said the x70 stops at 14mins for 1080p? do you mean the battery runs out by then? thanks :)
@bigheadtaco9 жыл бұрын
+quitto91 the camera limits the video length to 14min at 1080p at 60fps. I guess it has to do with the buffer size and the processing power limits of the camera. You can go double that if you drop the fps to 30fps or drop down to 720p.
@quitto919 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot! Did you find the lack of image stabilisation a problem in photos and videos?
@bigheadtaco9 жыл бұрын
quitto91 I'm use to lack of stabilization because I come from the era of having none, plus my Ricoh GR doesn't have it. If it had it, it would be nice, but remember the stabilization only steadies you, not your subject.
@hellojobenp9 жыл бұрын
I'm almost sad that this is so good, simply because of how it would affect the GR (which is great in its own right) by taking away sales. Hopefully this'll force Ricoh to update the GR sooner with better focusing, a higher resolution sensor etc. etc. in the way that people initially thought the GR ii was supposed to be.
@bigheadtaco9 жыл бұрын
+Joben Penuliar I too love the GR, I'm 18 years invested into this camera system and will still continue shooting with it. In terms of sales, yes, the new X70 will eat into new sales. Imagine being shown these two cameras at a camera store counter? It would be hard sell for the GR except for the die-hard fan, or someone with very specific requirements. The GR ergonomics is vastly superior though, and it is almost 100g lighter and very pocketable. These things may be very high on people's priorities and not just specs. As I mentioned, I'm keeping my GR. It's way to sexy to give up just for specs....

@bigheadtaco8 жыл бұрын
Do you mean am I concerned that the Fujifilm X70 doesn't have stabilization for video? Not really because it's not that great for video anyway. I would go Panasonic M43 or Sony for really solid video performance. As for stills, IS is definitely great, but there isn't much competition in this category (compact APS-C fixed lens and focal length point and shoot). I definitely wouldn't complain if it had it, but for now you just have to watch your shutter speeds and your own hands to stabilize your images.

does x70 has feature that is similar to GR's snap-distance?
@olivertwisted9 жыл бұрын
+Jim Lou It's looking like you would have to manually set the focus distance with the electronic scale every time you change aperture, similar to the X100.
@bigheadtaco9 жыл бұрын
+Jim Lou Snap focus distance is quite unique to the GR series. You can sort of fake it in manual focus mode. Use the AFL button to engage the AF to a distance you want to shoot at and it will stay there until you change it. However, if you're in AF mode, you can not automatically return back to that distance once you return to manual focus mode. It does not remember where you left off. Again, this is very unique to the GR and is a good reason to stick to the GR if you like shooting via scale or zone focusing
@jimlou83849 жыл бұрын
+bigheadtaco It doesn't look that they made any improvement on user-ability on manual focus. Which is a shame. As a season software architect, a feature similar to snap distance is very simple to implement. And as a manual focus user, I know how useful snap-distance is. I configured my GR default to snap-distance and one button away to change it.

For a beginning photographer or someone who just needs a camera for casual shooting the XA2 might be better due to the zoom lens. If you are comfortable with the wide prime lens, which takes some time to learn how to use properly, I would go for the X70.

@olivertwisted9 жыл бұрын
+Cuti X100 has an EVF and a faster lens, f/2 versus f/2.8, hence the price difference. X70 also has direct competitors, whereas the X100 is unique in its category. Which one is best would depend on your needs/shooting style.
@bigheadtaco9 жыл бұрын
+Cuti you're paying for the hybrid viewfinder, a premium technology that no other manufacturer has. Leica would be very very interested to have something like this in their M series cameras, but they don't. Only two series has this technology, the X100 and the X-Pro series. I personally love shooting with it when I'm shooting a particular style, while I'm happy using the rear LCD for other styles. It really depends on how you want to shoot and how much you want to spend on a camera. The image will be pretty much the same, minus the lens design and technology. From my tests, the X70 lens is sharper wide open versus the X100T stopped down to the same aperture. But lens sharpness is pretty much the same once you're stopped down to f/4 so there's no point in arguing the merits of lens sharpness.
