Q&A with the coach
How does bigorexia (a bodydismorphic disorder where a man never feels big and strong enough not matter how great his muscular gains) effect professional fighters? Have you ever wondered why most UFC fighters, in spite of their rigorous training, don’t look like aesthetic fitness models or body builders?
Well, if you don’t understand basic sport science, that may yet be a mystery, but this common misunderstanding leads to many casual fans expecting combat sports athletes to resemble comic book superheroes.
The ramifications of this are subtle, but importantly noticeable. In the same way that video killed the radio star, our unrealistic body image expectations have shaped the direction of the sport of MMA, as well as martial arts KZbin channels in general.

When I lived in Vietnam, whenever I'd be in public, people would stare and often strangers would touch my chest or squeeze my arms. They don't really have the same barriers to personal space that we have in the West and when you're very tall and thick, you are truly an oddity to the 5'6 average Asian man. One time, I was in an elevator, and a couple girls were gibbering in Vietnamese and giggling to their male counterpart who was smiling and just staring at me. One of the girls pantamimed measuring my height to his height, and I laughed and said, "Good genes". The dude, shockingly, spoke English and replied, "GREAT genes, you're freaking huge." As a bigorexia sufferer, these kinds of instances REALLY help your self esteem and, while you can't really see it when you look in the mirror, having strangers reaffirm your scrawniness is all in your head is a HUGE boost. I wish, in the West, we would compliment muscular men more often, because there's a lot of folks who suffer in silence. And it is suffering. If you know you've got it, just remember the mirror isn't reality. It's your fucked up brain lying to you. Keep training, but do it for the health, not because you are inadequate.

I meant more the fact that I still extremely struggle with benching anything more than 2 plates but my squat is almost at 4 plates now, like the strength is disportionally in my legs. I understand you'll always be able to lift more with your legs but not a gap this large

@@andremaldonado7410 I suck at just doing enough pushups, but my squats, deadlifts, lunges, I can do those all day. Been attending boxing for like two years, on-and-off in BJJ. That said, I really oughta get stronger in the upper body, just sympathizing with the "weak top, strong leg" situation.

Yep. My bench press is laughable. Generally speaking, fighters (like powerlifters) are not interested in puffy muscles like bodybuilders. Any sport where you are penalized for getting bigger (weighing more) because you're pushed up in weight class means these sports favor "hard gainers" or people who have a hard time getting big muscles despite getting stronger. Any sport that favors strength per pound like fighting, sprinting, powerlifting is going to be dominated by hard gainers who don't look that big and strong. The other thing about MMA is that they're not insecure about their ability to beat up another man. They don't need to look like they can fight when they know they can fight. So bigorexia is almost never a problem for fighters or functional athletes. For you Ramsey, you're a classic hard gainer. You have dense muscles that are strong but aren't that big.
@nickleback3695
@nickleback3695 3 жыл бұрын
Usually you only start seeing big muscles from fighters/boxers 200+ pounds, guys like ngannou and Anthony Joshua. The heavier guys actually seem to benefit from the extra mass, whereas the smaller guys (most weight classes) just seem slower and less explosive.
@GeorgeOu
@GeorgeOu 3 жыл бұрын
@@nickleback3695 Heavyweights benefit from being as big as possible because they don't need to cut weight. If you are a super lean 225, you'll be a bit stronger at moderately lean 245 and you'll probably do better against the 265 lb man. Heavyweight is the only weight class where you're not trying to be pound for pound stronger. There are very few elite super-lean 300 lb athletes trying to cut to 265, and probably none in MMA.

This “hardgainer” meme is big misconception in fitness. “Hardgainer” means combination of fast metabolism, small frame and aesthetically poor muscle inserts. Mean they look smaller because poor inserts don’t give their muscles the look of popping out. People who get big “easier” have slower metabolism (which you can manipulate), wider frame and longer muscle inserts. They will look bigger than “hardgainer” at same weight because of bone structure and muscle insert
@GeorgeOu
@GeorgeOu 3 жыл бұрын
@@pupperfaust8547 It's got nothing to do with metabolism. Ramsey eats 6K calories and doesn't look that big despite being very strong. Hardgainer describes someone who has the dense muscle type rather than the puffy bulging muscles that contain higher fluid content.
@pupperfaust8547
@pupperfaust8547 3 жыл бұрын
@@GeorgeOu that proves exactly what i was saying. Ramsey has very high metabolism if he eats that much per day to maintain 200lbs. There is 2 main type of muscle hypertrophy Myofibrilar: building new muscle fibres and the existing ones get thicker. This from mostly short bursts of high intensity effort Sarcoplasmic: the cells in muscle that store energy get bigger to store more atp and glycogen in adaptation to slightly longer bouts of effort. Your supposed “hardgainer” probably has a normal composition of both types as they both essential for muscle function

For some reason I was expecting a big lecture about cutting massive amounts of weight. Years ago I read a magazine article where in an interview former Pro Wrestler Goldberg talked about loosing weight. He said WCW wanted him to stay at around 300 pounds. But it was hard to take in enough clean calories to maintain that. So he went down to 280 if memory serves. in my view 280 is still pretty big. As for functional strength,I tend to be a simple sort. So when I think functional strength I tend to think strength to carry groceries in,swing a hammer and do other stuff that needs done. I might be looking at it wrong. But then again I'm a simple man.

I would add to this the fact that most fighters do not pay much attention to nutrition and proper weight training. They're here to fight, not to lift, and it probably hurts them. Renaissance Periodization has a video where they bring in a fighter to discuss how paying attention to those factors in the offseason gives him an edge over those who think eating and lifting effectively is just for training camp. You can find videos of this stuff across most sports: Bryce Harper deadlifting 315 in the most inefficient way possible, Zion Williamson continuing to try to gain weight as his knees crumble under his already massive body, Wonderboy Thompson getting half of his daily calories from peanut butter. The fact that one finds a sport interesting sadly appears to be no guarantee that one finds the process of creating the optimal body for that sport interesting.

Also to expand on your point about changing how you lift to get big it would be high intensity still, not as high as for strength training, but for higher reps with more sets and less rest period. Additionally slower movement to increase the time under tension for the muscles being trained. For what thats worth to you.

Great setting for your message - no drop in bag pace either ;-) Nice one. As you say, it used to be more about raw talent - less aesthetic (Freddie's story). Talent, truth and substance, over the curated image. But culture shifts. Televised combat, people love the theatre, drama, spectacle. Gladiator (2000, Ridley Scott), Maximus is told by Proximo to be 'less clinical' in dispatching opponents - Maximus 'Are you not entertained, is that not why you are here?' A powerful play of efficiency over entertainment. Great perspective and message as ever RD. For our time.

Quick mythical match-up for you Ramsey, an iteration of the boxing/wrestling vs. MT/BJJ conversation: who wins an MMA fight between a fighter that combines Jack Dempsey's boxing and Aleksandr Karelin's wrestling vs. a fighter that combines Buakaw's Muay Thai and Gordon Ryan's BJJ.

What I've found over the years is that bodybuilding training doesn't lend itself well to fighting because your muscles will get fatigued much faster from that type of training

Hey Coach! I had a question for you. I was thinking of opening my own studio in a couple years but am conflicted on what I should teach/train. I’ve been in martial arts several years (around 30). I have a black belt in karate and am currently taking BJJ too. I find both are beneficial. I know by that time I won’t be a BJJ black belt but have enough knowledge to give some basic understanding/application. I would like to teach both but am concerned my students will want an “MMA experience” when My goal would just be to train to survive a fight. Any thoughts? All the respect from one fighting Mormon to another. Thank you for your thoughts and advice on your channel.

The thinking of a fighter Who Is mascular and big Is a completly wrong idea. Who figth for real know that the muscular Mass have to be functional, me too, im quite a strong figther for the standard here in Italy, i see in the matches that i fougth,a lot of hypertrophy but instead of using It efficently they are slow and predictable. The real fighter must to train for a specific performance and for a specific kind of force, not massimal force but exploding and fast force. Coach Ramsey as Always u speak with knowledge of facts! Thanks for all the time u spend here to explain the right way to be a figther 🥋🥋

As I was watching your video, a nice historical example popped into my mind. Gladiators. Gladiators, as I believe you are aware, were athletes that competed in those gruesome fights (not as deadly as we think, but still somewhat deadly nonetheless and very dangerous), and they were athletes that were really well cared for, with "nice" food and all that, which they obviously needed in order to perform at their best, and yet they weren't all lean and ripped with abs popping out like we see in Spartacus and other midia. Gladiators usually had much more fat than we generally assume, they were very muscled yes, but they weren't lean with all the muscles and veins showing. Regarding the physique/body fat %, the character named Tigris in the movie Gladiator is much closer to what an actual gladiator looked like, than most of the cast in Spartacus, for example.

Do you ever feel like you're practice is hindered by being a coach, or is it better? I am one of the instructors at a dojo where I teach the intro courses and I've recently been put in a position where I can opt to start teaching more classes with mid to upper level members. I am at the dojo every day and I get great instruction and practice more or less whenever I want, but I want to give back and start teaching more and help ease the burden off my own instructors who are also there every day and spread pretty thin. The only problem is I'm worried that the time I spend teaching will be time I won't be training at a proper intensity and I will start to get worse since I will be focusing more on other people's development instead of my own. As a coach, do you feel like you lose out on good practice and conditioning by being the coach rather than the student?
