@@j.lietka9406 no, i did not have to pay anything to register, or continue to use steam; i only pay for games that i buy. once i buy a game, it is free to me forever. Also, since the game is in your steam account, even if you change computers, as long as you log into your steam account, your games are safely available for you.

this is not steam related but I highly recommend "ashes 2063" it's a doom 2 mod that you do not even need to own doom 2 for. Just download a file from moddb. It's an excellent first person shooter experience released in 2021 I believe. And it's free.

I used to game a lot long ago, not so much these days but would like to do more. What I would like to know: do I *need* Steam to run games nowadays? I hate the idea. I like to buy games the old way. On a CD-ROM, or a downloaded executable, install it on Windows and play. No stuff with needing accounts, or having to install stuff like steam. I want to make sure that I can *always* re-install and play the game regardless of if Steam is still around or not. So, are we forced to use the Steam ecosystem in 2024 or can I still buy standalone games that require nothing related to Steam whatsoever?

Hello i just wanted to know if i bought a game from the microsoft store and installed steam would it be added to my steam account? ( I never used it before,and my current os doesn't allow me to download Minecraft etc )

Xbox and Steam have their own promotional events where they provide games for free or at a great discount with the permission of the game's publishing company/developer. Often times, Xbox or Steam is fronting the cost for these promotional events in order to drive users to their platform. In other words, this is just Xbox's way of competing with Playstation and Steam.

@@glazedshades4692 When you start a game and you get to a very high level and then all of a sudden you can't get it to work. "You can't play that game on Linux." Except you've been playing it on Linux the entire time. Then, their excuse changes "The game isn't whitelisted for play on Linux." Who's fault is that? Certainly not the player's fault. So, they change their story, again. "It's the game company. You need to contact them." Steam is so invested in pushing PTW, that they don't like it when someone comes along and wins without paying them.

Hope you were able to figure this out and start enjoying Steam. If not, Steam is a platform that exists primarily in the form of a software application on your computer, although it does have an extensive website which you can browse through. In order to download games to your computer from Steam, you will need to download and install the Steam application itself first. And of course, all of this requires that you have created an account with Steam beforehand. Feel free to reply to this comment if you're still working on this and have questions. Steam is something I use almost every day, and I'd be glad to help out :)
