Note to anyone looking to build a car dolly: Car dollies need to have a pivoting cradle to work properly. If they don't pivot, they drag their tires sideways around corners and will eventually break the tongue, right where the two truss tubes are welded to the tongue. Having the cars steering wheel unlocked does not help. DG

Not true, just need to know how most dollies are fixed
@deegee80322 жыл бұрын
@@xycho351 All that means is most don't understand the physics involved. The pivot points in the steering do not allow for a full relief of the pressure that is generated during a turn even though the steering wheel turns some. The outside wheel of the car is pulled forward and the inside wheel is pushed back . Try this the next time you have your car on the dolly. With the trailer straight behind, measure the distance from the front tread of the tires to a reference point on the trailer. Then, make a tight turn and stop when the dolly/car is at its maximum deflection. Then, remeasure the two measurements. Cars are not manufactured to tolerate a lot of this. The only way to relieve this stress is to have a pivot that is in the center of the dolly. DG

Also, you need to ask yourself, why does Uhaul only rent pivoting dollies.
@darkfireBikes2 жыл бұрын
That is partially true. You can have a fixed deck as long as you leave your steering wheel unlocked and car in neutral. The reason U-Haul only rents pivoting is simply cause it's easier to use. Don't have to leave the key in the ignition and put it in park if it's a fwd

Yea... haven't seen too many tow dollies doing donuts in the parking lot. I think many folks on here just don't understand how it works. You turn corners in your car everyday... think about that for a few minutes. Here is your visualization problem. Do not do this except over the tires... "Strap it down nice and tight!!!!"
@BadmunkyWRX5 жыл бұрын
Your not understanding here not me man. When you turn and the car turns on the dolly the wheels on the dolly have NOTHING to do with it. If there strapped the car CAN NOT turn on the dolly. Here is why. And I will make you a video explanation if you need it as well. When the tow vehicle turns such as a 90 degree corner in a city the dolly will angle behind the tow vehicle in order to follow it correct? Ok so if it did not do this, and was locked to the tow vehicle with no pivot point (the hitch in this case) it would have no other option than to be dragged sideways right? The car on the tow dolly is now the same. The dolly is now the tow vehicle and the car is now the trailer. If both front tires are strapped down tight enough to prevent the car from falling off then they will not move front to back on the dolly at all right? Well if they can not move front to back on the dolly at all the car will not turn on the dolly. Why? Because you can turn the tires on the dolly all you want on the dolly and the car will stay in a straight line on the dolly. In order for the rear of the car to not be in a straight line with the dolly axles it has to be at an angle on the dolly. (This is what the center pivot point allows) Even if you can turn the front wheels of the car in order for the CAR to move to an angle on the dolly so it is not being drug sideways the outside front tire will HAVE to move back on the dolly. If its strapped in place it CAN NOT do this. So with the steer tires of the vehicle on the dolly strapped in place the car can NOT pivot on the dolly in any way and thus it WILL be drug sideways exerting a MASSIVE force on the front suspension and steering. This WILL bend things on the towed vehicle. And if towed far enough will ruin the rear tires from be drug sideways. This is actually why your strap did not stay tight on your test run. This might work for a very short trip with limited turns but tow this thing threw a large city and spin it around at a gas station trying to get to a pump and the towed cars messed up for sure. If you need a video to demonstrate this I would be happy to make you one. I have towed a trailer for living almost all my adult life. I have built trailers, and dolly's in the past. And am planning a trailer build right now. I went to school for automotive engineering as well. I am not just some keyboard know it all. In fact I am sure there are things I could learn from you! I promise you your dolly will damage anything you tow with it unless you don't turn! This is not an argument it is a statement of fact. Let me know if you want that video made for you demonstrating why your dolly with damage the towed vehicle.

Ian is right. There needs to be a pivot between the dolly wheels and the rear wheels of the towed vehicle. Every properly engineered dolly I've seen has a pivot point between the tie down platform and the axle, or an axle with steerable wheels.

@@pjnelson5827 no this type you leave steering lock off
@pjnelson58274 жыл бұрын
@@jamestwyman7020 the steering should be unlocked whenever using a dolly, but it is never enough flexibility. The dolly must have a pivot or a self steering axle. If the dolly is rigid, it will put tremendous forces on the front wheels of the towed vehicle during turns because the front wheels can only pivot in place. They don't change in orientation to the rear wheels.

@@label1877 - To safety check or not safety check... this is the question. Building a homemade car dolly is all fine and great until the dolly comes apart on the highway and injures/kills someone due to someone building one that has absolutely no business/skill building a proper and safe dolly.

WJK One could make that argument on absolutely anything. A boat trailer, a tire carrier, an outside lighting fixture. So you do not trust your fellow citizens to know their ass from a hole in the ground. Nobody but licensed, insured, bonded men are “allowed “ to do anything? That is a ...big brother knows best Philosophy. It’s a heavy handed way to run a government. In my state, that would not fly. Life has risks, if homemade dollies become a safety issue, we will address it.
@__WJK__4 жыл бұрын
@label1877 - No, actually the argument can't be made for everything... you can't cherry-pick or use half logic where full logic is required. (ie) Someone builds a homemade lighting fixture and it fails and falls off their barn wall and whacks them on their head, that's completely isolated to them, as it only affects (hopefully) just them. Send a homemade whatever rolling up and down public roads (vs rolling up and down someone's personal/private road) and the item should need AND be allowed to receive a simple and easy inspection and approval. See... I'm actually 100% for homemade items be it private off-road us or public on-road use but there's a right way and a wrong way to go about it. The Gov't/States ultimately work for the people... if there isn't a system in place that allows someone to build (for example) a diy car dolly (and also a way to get it inspected and approved for public road use) then that simply needs to change... easy as that.

You don't have any safety chains to attach to the towing vehicle, no safety chains to attach to the car being towed, you don't have the legal tire straps that are required, no ramps, no fenders, no swiveling platform , and license plate needs to be mounted on the fenders that aren't there with light on them as well. I wouldn't pay $200.00 for that. And it won't pass a DOT inspection. BUT I am just saying!!!!!!!! I build trailers for a living.

So with all the negative comments ... it would seem an impossible way to use this dolly..however the fact is yes it will work .is it optimal , ? No of course not it would be better if it had a swivel . But it will work and yes leaving the steering will alleviate some of the problem ..not all but enough .. as far as the tire scrubbing .. I. Would ask one of you geniuses to explain how a 3 axle trailer would ever work? Yet they are sold every day also how many of you know the difference between a spread axle trailer and a closed axle trailer ? .. granted a spread axle can dump the air on a tight turn .. if you have air suspension.. so those types of axle configurations run thousands of miles daily.. on heavy trucks lots of weight .. and you people think that a car dollie with no turntable but does allow for som turning with steering ...and drawing around a lill pos car that weigh maybe 3 thousand lbs is out of the question ? Also how much use will it have ?

Why even bother with gloves if you don't even have a jacket, shirt or pants on while arc welding and grinding?
@BigRedFishDad5 жыл бұрын
Because you use your hands to grab things not your legs. Also, I have nicked the gloves while grinding many times it would not have been so great on bare fingers.
@farmsgrace3415 жыл бұрын
@@BigRedFishDad arc spatter goes everywhere though. Hands aren't the only body parts hit when arc welding. Granted, even when you wear all the gear you still get spatter down into your shirt or jacket and still get burned, but you get burned a whole lot less.
@BigRedFishDad5 жыл бұрын
@@farmsgrace341Yep it does... not too worried about that it hurts when it gets in the crocs but so does bacon grease when it pops all over your hand when cooking. But you said why bother while grinding as well...a cutoff wheel will take a finger down to the bone quick without gloves but a little spatter aint gonna ruin my day.
@farmsgrace3415 жыл бұрын
BigRedFishDad I only added grinding to my question because the caption on that part of the vid said grinding and welding, even though that section of the vid only showed your helper or son arc welding without a shirt or long pants on. You were at least wearing a shirt while mig welding or maybe flux core welding(didn't see a bottle). As for your crocs, I've welded with flip flops on once before, long long ago, so I know the "joy" of that and have opted for boots from then on. Anyways, it's your body to do with as you please and I really have no say in what you do. I was just asking a question. So, asked and answered. Very nice towing trailer. Have a great day.

Safety first Need to wear boots gloves eye protection This dolly needs work Yes it needs the turntables for the tires and weight distribution DOT Dept of transportation would fail it CHP California Highway patrol would pull you over and declare it unsafe at highway speeds Consider electric brakes if you can they help alot on steep grades .

It is a blatant lie that you need an articulating wheel pan. Fixed pan designs work much better in turns than the moving ones. In addition, it is impossible to damage your car with the dolly fender brackets. Swivel pan designs are obsolete.

What are you towing it with? The tow vehicle is what you need to go by if its rated less than the state law. My Silverado 2500HD is rated for 5K without trailer brakes. After that I must have them. In my case the state laws is lower so I have to go by that. My old Tahoe was only rated for 2,500 without trailer brakes. State law was still lower at 2k so I still had to go by that. My wifes Jeep is only good for 1,500 without trailer brakes so I have to go by that even tho state law is 2k.
