Hey there all you beautiful people how are you all on another Friday melt with the one and only BigStack-D ? Today I fire up the kiln and give that a run, I clearly have a lot to learn and not sure what I'm doing there but I'm sure I'll figure it out soon enough. Not complete failures but not a complete success either with the three melts I do. Anyway enough rambling I hope you enjoy today's video and as I always say most importantly have a happy safe week end and I'll see all you awesome people next Friday 😃👋🏻

The clay should at most be 1 cm thick when firing it quickly, any thicker you should program the kiln to heat gradually. Also, you need to knead the clay like bread dough to work out all the air bubbles (your hands should be slightly tired by the end of the process), like a steam explosion, air bubbles can have catastrophic results in ceramic creations, even simple ones like molds. 3 years of high school experience here. And I'd love to hear back from you.

The reason the clay would be moist is that it wasn't left to dry before being put in the kiln, and that is also the reason it had cracked. Hope I helped mate, I can't wait to see the goal completed!

I am no expert on clay and have not worked with it in years but I do agree with that being the biggest reason but even if he did that there are other things that he needs to be carefull of because they can cause problems with clay. -Moisture. -Air Bubbles. -Pockets of Air. -Thick Walls. -Firing Too Quickly.

Yeah air bubbles in the clay.. wedge it first. Mold it then air dry and then fire it and you'll get less cracks

Hand mixing (actually stick your hands in)the Plaster will help eliminate bubbles in the mold vibration also helps. As for casting metal you want to give your mold a good week or more to fully dry otherwise you risk steam bubbles or worse. I do mostly lead castings but the same applies to that I had molds blowing up in the kiln until i started letting nature take it's course and allow the plaster to fully air dry. You might consider weighing your plaster after you mix and weigh it when you think it's ready the dried plaster should weigh close to your starting plaster weight before hydration +5-8% max. Hope this helps...-Gort P.S. A warm-hot attic space is great for drying plaster molds.

When using the POP you would smell the acidic fumes of sulphur dioxide coming off at high temperatures. When you pour brass in, the copper reduces the Sulphur Dioxide to become Copper Sulphide which is the black coat you see. It looks good.

I love it man. Someone exploring something new and took us along on your journey. Too many KZbinrs just show only their successes and not their mishaps leaving people feeling like they should be experts from the start and get things on the first try. I think you should add both pieces to your collection as a reminder of the journey and that its not always an easy or smooth journey but you always take something away as you continue on it. Also, some pieces to look back on once you get the process down and remember the start of it.

I know this video is old by now but make sure you drain the wax completely. When you think it's done, change the pan it drains into and keep melting it out until no more drips out at all. You might have had a bit of wax as well as moisture in there. Also maybe try incorporating the wire in the clay or plaster mold so it acts as rebar, instead if just wrapping it on the outside. It should help it stay together

Ref: firing the clay in the kiln. I noticed the pieces chipping off when you took it out. Its to do with air bubbles in the clay mostly. Clay has to be kneaded well to remove bubbles - i might not be fully accurate as i havent done pottery in a long time. Ref the humidity, somebody already answered so. Great video as always! 1st thing i watch after work on Friday 😁😁😁

Cracked ceramics are often caused by steam explosion. All clay and plaster type molds should be set out to dry (in dry climates) and/or placed in an oven at about 80-90 degrees C at least overnight to drive off moisture. Then ramp it up slowly to working temperature. Hope this helps

You can candle the kiln and have it run at a temperature below boiling point to speed up the drying process or just to ensure that it's dried out. I have a giant project that I finished yesterday that I'm putting in my kiln tomorrow because I want to be 100% certain it is completely dry. One way you can tell when clay is dry is if it feels room temperature. If it feels cool to the touch, then it's not dry enough.

I'm not a metal guy- but I've been around clay and ceramics a bit. Get some ceramic slip, put your wax positive in the slip. (Dip it like a candle and it has multiple layers) then melt the wax out then fire the pottery to cone 5 or 6 (your kiln has a setting for that. I saw it.) Then you'll have a clay positive to pour your metal into. PS, the clay has to complete a phase change. It's got to become kinda a little bit lava and fuse together. Love your content! Keep it up!

As someone already said. You need to let your clay mould air dry completely before casting. It's the same if you fire the clay in your kiln, it has to air dry first. It's the say with plaster of paris as a mould, It needs a few days to air dry before use. Good luck.

uh have not had idol casting in a while (actually can not remember weather i even did see any, i started following about year ago), appreciate the novelty. To be fair i do find the wax removal from surfaces rather satisfying, even if it dose stain non sealed wood. Looking at the wax cast i think this could be a very good relatively cheap way to learn to pour - far safer than molten metal and significantly faster too. Little snackD - but its good it reminds me of 90s, this was omnipresent snack here. (altho they always asked which ONE sauce customer wants, never gave us luxury of both). Regarding wind i reckon more directional mic could help a little? there are microphones that, much like optical lenses (in microscope or telescope), pick up sound from very specific area.

Several items but let's just say first off moisture is the enemy to casting, and choice of clay type is an important one for both drying and strength. Clay will also typically shrink about 12% as it dries. My biggest concern is when melting the brass, you should be adding borax and powdered glass at the beginning of the melt. You can see the toxic white smoke coming off your melt, this is the zinc boiling out of you molten brass and the powdery residue is zinc oxides coating your crucible and kiln. Use flux and put a lid on your crucible when melting brass.
