The votes came in and it was a landslide decision, so it's a full shelf melt. A hell of a lot of melts going on today with some awesome bars and they're all quite clean considering no flux was used, and they were just slag and dust And don't forget that Indiana Jones and goonies coin 👍🏻. Now sit back relax and Enjoy the video as I always say have an awesome day and I'll see all you amazing people hopefully next Friday 👋🏻😁 Well I'll be here either way👊🏻😃

Rained here too. 🤨 Have an awesome weekend. 🤙🤙🤙💜💜💜💙💙💙

If you’re worried about overheating zinc yet again in the future, I’ve heard that you can melt glass in the same crucible and it’ll float on top without mixing, protecting the metal from oxygen. Apparently it’s a common practice since most if not all metals produce at least a little oxide when melted and exposed to oxygen.
@bjrn-oskarrnning27402 ай бұрын
Glass, sand, flux, borax, all work and are common. If you're worried about impurities or use particularly reactive metals, a constant trickle of argon gas also works.

Aluminium likes to react with oxygen. On its surface you always have a layer made of aluminium oxide. So my guess is that all your aluminium dust was aluminium oxide dust and you won’t get any aluminium metal from it. Aluminium is usually purified using electrolysis and not melting, because you have to force the aluminium to let go of the oxygen.
@ekane85982 ай бұрын
I was about to comment something similar. The metal in the dust particles are probably too small for the Al to get through the oxide coating. No problem for the larger pieces though. Now back to the vid for the puppers.
@betabry422 ай бұрын
Add one more to the Aluminum Oxide theory. It has a much higher melting point as well.
@andycortez93162 ай бұрын
I learned something new thanks to you. I always thought that aluminum oxide was purified using a reducing agent when smelting but electrolysis sounds like a better idea and it can be done outdoors using solar panels and batteries while mr. stacks does some melting. or even better, mr. stacks could try to make some thermite with that dust if he hasn't already for content.
@bluefloyd12 ай бұрын
Aluminium likes oxygen so much it pulls it off rust. Maybe we'll see thermite here, hopefully not accidentally.

I am not an expert but I'm Geman and Germans know how to keep things in order 😀It's not easy to keep track of different kinds of metal if you don't organize. I suggest to get some containers properly labelled to collect all slag and failed pours. Right after you melted something put slag and failed pours into the appropriate container and you won't ever have to wonder what this stuff is in your jars. You won't need many containers. One for copper, one for aluminium, one of zinc, one for nordic gold... you get the pricture. It doesn't matter where the slag and all came from as long as they are in the right container. Once a container has a decent amount you can simply melt it, being sure it's all the same kind of metal. Or you can keep going the same way you always did which is also fun to watch. Anyways, keep it up, I like your videos!

55:02 I have had that white-hot aluminium oxide in my melts before. I'm not sure on exactly what causes it, but when I remelt my aluminium slag it is a lot more common, especially if I overheat it and its somewhat buried in the crucible. After you expose it to air, it seems to get very bright as if it is burning a bit like zinc, and if you put it into water when its very hot and white it explodes sometimes, or skids across the water like burning sodium. It seems like it reacts with the water, separating the oxygen or hydrogen

Brasses melting point is extremely close to it’s boiling point and if you boil brass it will react with oxygen and produce zinc oxide which it’s that yellow/white cobweb stringy stuff you sometimes see on other brass melts . It’s not the biggest problem to deal with but it can certainly make a hell or a mess 👍🏻

Amusingly, Veritasium just yesterday posted a video in which an expert on thermite explains why the aluminum dust behaves the way it did in your crucible. Look up the video and start it at around 32:30 to see. Basically the aluminum oxide layer on the surface of the particles seals them so that they are much more difficult to melt than bulk aluminum metal. (It's not that the layer is any thicker that it is on any other piece of aluminum; it's that the dust particles are tiny so there's not much aluminum inside them to push aside the oxide layer, while that's pretty trivial for a larger glob of molten aluminum to do.)
