Steam boilers need water, so this week I'm building an old wooden water tank to perch high on the cliffs above the Blackjack Mine. Starting with a simple mailing tube, I add wood, paper, and metal details - plus layers of weathering - to bring the structure to life.
Thanks for watching, amigos!

I am amazed with the ingenuity of the "tools" You have to work Your magic Dave! That is the one thing about hobbyist that is so fantastic! I am always intrigued watching You work on the layout! Thank You so much for taking the time energy and effort to share Your hobby with Us here on the tube! I am a fan of Your work, even though I don't have the space for such an endeavour, and look forward to watching Your videos! Thank You again, Take Care, Be Safe, God Bless, Later

Great video as usual.Lots of nice modeling tips. I like the vertical height of your tank, makes a unique structure. Using shrink wrap for tubing and connectors is a cool idea. The tank blends in nicely with the adjacent mine structure.Weathering and detail tips are much appreciated as usual.

I read somewhere that the true difference between something that is good and something that is amazing is attention to detail. You never cease to amaze.😏Wow... am I never looking forward to the months to come.

Dave, I love your water tank, it is a work of art. I have a wood water tank that is half built. I am going to try your weathering techniques on it. Also, your new camera setup is very nice. It makes your work more visable. Thank you for sharing and adding the new camera.

Wow, so dang awesome! I had an HO layout as a little guy, many decades ago. My dad helped me build it. Your videos bring back some great memories. I can’t get over how you can create such awesome things from a piece of foam or tube of cardboard. What a master! Thank you so much Sir!

Looks good. The bands, whether they are rods or straps, should be closer together at the bottom and get farther apart closer to the top because the water pressure will be greater at the bottom as you showed. Bands and rods were usually about nine or ten feet long and connected together with bolts. The connections for rods were cast iron castings with holes for the rods almost paralleling each other and, depending on the plans or standards, could either be in vertical alignment or staggard around the tank. There would be a connector about every 9 or 10 feet in each level of the band. I used to have a set of CRI&P Standard Plans for track and B&B of which there were 2 or 3 standard plans for wood and steel water tanks. I did not copy these plans before I gave them to the NMRA for reprinting, which they have not yet done. What about a water level indicator which is almost a universal item? You don't want them to run out of water with miners down in the mine.

Dear Dave, awesome water tank. Cool to see the laser cut and scribed 1/36” basswood wrap around. I’ll look into that idea. Until now I’ve always built my own water towers out of cut and chopped lollipop sticks. Less precise, but a great way to get some nice and rough boards around the paper tube. Love the details. Cheerio

I love that you use Bristol board in your modeling. (I think the old school ways need to be kept around). Here is a question I have never found an answer to: The old Model Railroad Hobby magazines used to describe Bristol board as being one ply, two ply, etc. Today Bristol board is sold in Pound Weight. (50 Lb, 60 Lb. etc.) Have you ever found a way to convert the old Ply system to the modern Lb system?

Another fine video and build Dave. On the double sided tape, do you put a little piece of scrap paper to make it easier to pull up? Or doesn't it matter?
