I am an American. This song was not a hit in the States. I am grateful that in the 1990s I went to Western Washington University just across the border in Bellingham Washington, and that Rock 101 Vancouver was my soundtrack while there. I remember Rock 101 playing this greät song like mad in the Summer of 1998. So for one American, it *was* a hit in America. lol

Canadians are accustomed to Canadian songs receiving little to no air play in the US. It's intentional. They're being blocked. When you look at Canada's population size and how many great bands come from Canada, it's off the charts. A lot of Americans don't get exposed to Canadian artists until they visit Canada (where you can actually hear them on the radio) or when they make it into Hollywood movies and/or gain international fame. I remember doing a project back in music class and the goal was to pick a Canadian artist and do a bio on them. This was back when I was at an age where I didn't think about things like where the band came from. I thought it was going to be difficult to find a Canadian artist until I realized they were all pretty much Canadian. Canada probably puts out more top songs and top artists than any country other than the US. It's unreal. We punch way above our weight class musically.
@cantdrivefiftyfive5 жыл бұрын
@@taekwondotime Dude, I think that Canadians get a LOT of exposure, it's just that few make a big deal about the fact that they are Canadian. Look how many good bands in the States head to California to make it big and then are called a California band when they make it after a few years. Life ain't fair...
@taekwondotime5 жыл бұрын
@@cantdrivefiftyfive Canadian artists get a lot of exposure in Canada and overseas, but it's typically the US market that is the last market on earth to be aware of their success because they do their best not to give any air time to Canadian artists on American radio stations. It's a "Made in America" bravado thing.

I saw Big Wreck open for Dream Theater in Atlanta in 1999, and I'd never heard of them before. The entire comment thread contradicts this theory. Nobody came here randomly to listen to this song, yet we are all getting nostalgic sitting here listening consciously. Of course, when he wrote this song, doing this wasn't an option..if you didn't have the tape, it had to be in some car across the street.

It especially works after a breakup. You hear That Song, and you just think "Man, I really love That song... Wait... Oh. I get it now."
