All good , kero and diesel are the best and the safest thing for the chain, been using it since a long time. And the gear oil is also better then any chain spry lube it stick for a longer time and provide best rust protection. But please don't start your engine while working on chain , there have been countless number of fingers and thumbs which have been lost due to this. It takes only slight bit longer to lube it with engine off. One more tip, i use ep140 for summers and ep 90 for winters as ep 140 has thicker in kinematic viscosity so it bears the heat better then ep90. Try it and you will feel a difference. Gear oil is the best and oldest thing to lube a chain. I have been doing this since a very long time. And target the o rings on both sides not just the rollers one round each on both sides orings and one quick round on the rollers with engine off, all it take less the 2 minutes. And for those saying kero will eat and destroy the oring , no it will not as both kero and diesel are oil based and good for rubber rings companies like suzuki have mentioned using kero/diesel in the manual of their bigger bikes. Be safe ride well.

Very informative video . Just FYI and money saving: I have yamaha fz 2009 and changed my chain set after 22500 kms. I went to showroom first to get estimate for same which was given Rs 3500 appx. As most companies uses Rolon or D.I.D chains and I inquired from market and both were readily available in around 950 bucks (complete chain set) . I opted for D.I.D chain set and paid Rs 100 for labour and whole chain set change costs me around 1050 bucks. Same applies to chain clean and lubing. Clean with kerosene and lube with SAE 90 or 120 lube oil. Ordered half litre gulfstar lube oil from amazon which costed around 115 bucks and due to small quantity needed to be applied I think I can manage 3-4 yrs with same oil. For bike wash I prefer to wash it at home only for sole purpose of satisfaction . Use black sunsilk pouch which car washers and bike washers use.

Okay it’s a good one the gear oil stuff. But try to avoid gear oil in rainy season or don’t use excessive . The oil is quite thin and get easily mixed with the rain water while running in chain sprocket. This further leads to the oil all over your back tyre on the road too. Whatever it is it sticks to your tyre further making your bike wobble from back side.

I use dispenser oil on my Dominar 400's chain which is much more thicker than 90 gear oil. It can run for about 700-800 kms and still remain wet but i clean and lube at around 500 kms. Yes Motul or other spray lubes gets dry very soon and they are costly. I also read somewhere that mostly spray chain lubes are just 90 gear oil with some additives for stickiness. I would recommend dispenser oil because 90 gear oil gets off very easily because once the chain gets hot due to friction, the 90 gear oil becomes thin and gets off the chain whereas dispenser oil stays very thick even after getting hot.

I am using EP 140 gear oil. very effective... long lasting chain. Reduced chain noise.
@yaiphuakhakpa2275 жыл бұрын
Chain lube is totally different from that gear oil. I used both. In chain lube the fluid enters most of the parts and applys evenly but this cant be done in gear oil. Waxpol lube is by far the best in lube that i have used. If used both than chain will last longer. Mine is now running 27k km and still perfect in the most rainy region of india (?). In rain nothing is better than the gear oil as the cost is very low and can be carried easily on a bottle.

I agree with u. I just bought my royal Enfield 3 mobths back and have crossed over 7k km . I have been using these lubes. Like kangarro. But i cant see the smoothness. And it do not spread to the whole chain and do not go deep into the chain links. Plus cleaning is a hsrd job. As its too sticky . I too am thinking to roll over to gear oil soon. 🤔
@MOTOMENTOR3 жыл бұрын
Sure bro there is no harm to try just make sure you do not over lube coz it will spread on over body pats which can catch dust but again it will not harm try it for your self and you will get use to it. Best of luck and thanks for watching. Do suggest my channel to your friend if you think its worth.

Too much discussion, but my Hero Honda passion plus of 2008 completed 70000 km today so just wanted to take care of bike so searching videos. But what I found is hilarious. I myself never clean or lubricate or adjust the tension of my chain but every service interval (2500 km) mechanic does it. Every time I wash my bike once in 2-3 months I go to mechanic and ask to lube wherever and whichever parts needed it just for 10-20 Rs and in these 10 years and 70k km running neither chain nor sprockets are changed. There is no noise, no rust. So shall I be more cautious and take care of my bike or will it be good idea to leave it on mechanic as I am doing this for 10 years.

So I tried your technique for 6 months on my 2016 Yamaha R15 v2 and here's my experience: I'm using 90w gear oil for chainlube and the chain dries out quickly. I could hear the rough rattling sound from the chain at 6th gear around 70kmh speed. I'm trying to lubricate the chain more often now as it dries out real quick, but this is making the lower bike area quite dirty and greasy. Please help

i also use gear oil to lubricate my chain rather than chain lube after cleaning it with kerosene. simple explanation is that, it gives protection for much friction to chain and sprockets. that help the life of chain go beyond further
@peppersalt54484 жыл бұрын
I am using Gear oil in chain since long in my RE Thunderbird and its a good chain lube... But, i seen Motul Chain lube works better in rainy season becoz of having rust proof and other additives in it. Rather than Gear oil alone, i use Gear Oil +Petrol Mix as it becomes less viscous and easily goes the inner portions of RE chain. After reaching, petrol get evaporated and only gear oil remains... In short rides, i use Motul Chain Lube while on long rides i use gear oil+petrol mixture.

Use lower grade oil instead which is less viscous. But thin oil don't stay long on the chain.
@peppersalt54484 жыл бұрын
By doing so, my bike previous chain lasted for 58+k.. Petrol can spoil o rings of chain, but with gear oil mixture, very less damage to rubber o rings.
@harikrishnankazhanikunnath24956 жыл бұрын
But using oil is not a good method it will attract lot of dirt and will stick to the chain which could result in much faster wear. Where as motul chain lube is not an oil but it will create a coating over the chain which should be cleaned and re applied between 500 to 1000km and it is also more water proof than oil.
@ch3kw46 жыл бұрын
Harikrishnan kazhanikunnath you are right. 4 years ago I use the gear oil as a chain lube and I’ve notice that it attracts dirt for 1400km 1 ride and I stop using it. But if you always clean your chain that is good. If you are using the motul I think it is much better than gear oil but you need to put it to the chain every 500km maybe.
@MOTOMENTOR6 жыл бұрын
Brother thanks for Watching my video..... See the basic function of any oil is to reduce friction and Protect metel from rust this oil is thick not and like our normal engine oil it's easy to clean as well where as motul chain lube get hard after some time it's vvv sticky and even this attracts dust and it takes a lot of efforts to clean it M not against motul chain lube but I found gear oil V cheap and best i alway prefer to make videos based on my experience and practical incident..

Be careful with O/X/Z-ring chains and kerosene. A recent video by Fortnine on chain cleaners showed that kerosene is indeed affordable and cleans really well, but penetrates past the rings tremendously. That's not good, as it would dissolve the factory lubrication that the O-rings are supposed to keep in. Another well-known cleaner, Simple Green, cleans roughly as well, is cheap and another benefit of it compared to kerosene is that it's not flammable and doesn't smell. It's readily available in the US and Canada (I think), but I'm not sure about other parts of the world. Great video otherwise! I've been looking at various products, but keep coming back to simple old-school gear oil as it's easy to find, affordable and still seems better than anything else.

Even I used MOTUL CHAIN LUBE... but then I was a amature and over use it,that too in rainy season... And I ruined my chain totally... And then I used gear Oil... Since, a mechanic suggested me and guess what... I won't say it restored my old chain but the gear oil far better then anything else.. The dirt that stick due to my previous chain lube used to be hard when its get dry but now at least when the dirt do attach they come up easily and the sound of my chain has been reduced drastically ? I must tell you GEAR OIL are good even better in some case cuz if you don't clean properly and then use chain lube and that too on rainy days and dirt roads it only going to ruin you chain and both of the sprockets.
@kuulbhaskar6 жыл бұрын
Yeah you're absolutely right that while using motul chain lube during monsoon it does dry up quickly resulting in rust in the chain which is very annoying even after cleaning and lubing every 500kms, thanks for the informative video will try the gear oil this time with higher grade like sae140!!

I have Pulsar 180 and service center guy told me that open chain setup like in sports bike ( mostly above 150cc duke , pulsar, R15) should use spray instead of oil / grease, as they are open they are more prone to the dust, and when dust will stuck it will damage the chain. Where as bike like discover (below 150cc) should or can go for oil as they have closed chain set. I found his suggestion valid. But even i prefer oil/grease for my pulsar 180 (open set up) Whats your say on this , what should i use. Today only i watched ur video and it was really well explained :) i subscribed your channel too. Keep going like this .....
@MOTOMENTOR6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching my video. The service center guy did say correctly and make sense however I made this video coz i tests this theory into practical and since my bike has a open Chain I followed the service center suggestions to use chain lube which is good but the only problem is in the rain when the water gets locked inside the chain and in extream summer the chain lube gets too dry which makes lots of noise on the Chan, the oil in compair keeps the dust soft it's easy to remove easy to apply and cheap too. I have been using this since long and has really got a better results compair to motul chain lube.

Gear oil is good for commuter bikes where the regular speeds are well below 80-90 kmph which is majorly city usage. Speeds above 80-90 if done regularly (mainly highway usage), the gear oil will splatter and hence chain will dry up soon. There is a reason why chain lubes like motul are expensive. They stick to the chain without splatter even at constant 100+ speeds. I'm saying this after using both - Castrol 90 gear oil as well as Motul C2 for my CBR250R.
