Hi there, I think it's amazing that you take your cat with you for bike touring! We would also like to take our cat with us to our bike tour (from Belgium to Spain) but we are a little afraid of how she will react on the road. It will be the first time for our cat to be on a bike (if we are taking her with us, we are still thinking about it). How was your first bike ride with your cat? Do you have some tips for us?

Hi Melissa and thank you for your kind words! Actually this was our first bike-tour together, and Cezar adapted very well. However, I would recommend that you took her out for shorter rides just to get her used to being out and on a bike. To be honest, Cezar was complaining a lot the first week and always meowed the first 30 min or so, when starting the ride. Than after a while he got tired of complaining and just went to sleep...(PLEASE note though, if he would have been in any suffer of some kind, I would have cancelled the whole trip, right away!) Since I didn't really do any preparation prior to our bike-tour, I can't really give you any specific 'step-by-step' tips. However, Cezar was already used to "moving" around, being in different places. So it was easy for me to bring him along, with the confident that he would be able to handle it. So again, the only advise I could give you is to train you cat to be comfortable in new places. Like for example, take her out for walks, take her with you wherever you go and take her along on shorter bike-rides around the block. Hope this helps and let us know if you are bringing her and how it went, since we do want to inspire others that you CAN travel with your furry-four-legged-loved ones! Cheers

Everybody says that it’s crazy touring with a cat but I think that if you put a lot of time in your cat and have a lot of patient, everything is possible 😊 you just showed that with this channel. Hey man. Loved your video. I did this wIth my street cat in 2015-2016. He was the same way- riding on top of the trailer. I never knew other people did this. Cheers bro. Hope to start getting back into it.

These guys need to meet up with Dean and Nala from 1bike1world. Nala's been to more countries at this point but they could still have a good time touring together by bike. The best I've ever done is hitch my camping trailer to my SUV and pack the cats up and go. I had one who LOVED camping and road trips. She'd sit on the dash and watch the world go by while her brother slept in the back seat all day.

Congratulations for giving your cat a touring holiday! I love cats but, as a pensioner, I can't afford to have one now. (Vet's bills are quite high.) I would never have thought of taking one with me on my bike, yet Cezar seems so relaxed with it all. Wonderful!

Did you have any problems while crossing border with your cat? As far as I know most cats needs a chip, a "passport" from the vet & a rabies shot at the right time. Did you always sleep in a tent outside?

Traveler's Garden The trip where the video is from, we where within Schengen in Europe, which is (in short) a collective of European countries in an agreement with no borders. I never had to show any document, but than again we where traveling by land. Although, I had the documents needed, (as you already mentioned) a valid rabies vaccination, a pet passport and chip marked. We camped the most part, using a tarp but we also used a community called warmshowers.org...also while on the Camino De Santiago we had some municipales/hostels Hope you find some inspiration to go for a longer ride with you furry friends and we wish you good luck 😺

Of course, you can! In this video, I used two different setups, one with a trailer and one with a pet box on the bike rack. We also have another bag which is 'approved' by the airline so we can do other adventures as well. I really hope you bring your kitten on your next adventure/vacation :)

i guess the trailer can be for cat as well . i may get one as can't find cat carrier for front handle bars , use for my cat Magic that is larger than my smallest cat Bear . i like take both my cats out of day so they can see outside .

I did this with my cats, but just start off slowly, riding slowly with a very long leash, in case they jump out, then just slowly every few days just make the leash shorter, and ride a bit quicker. Im sorry, its quite difficult to explain. But my cats got to the point where they dont even need a leash, they just dit inside and chill on top, or they ride in my lap.

Leash-training is very possible for cats, even training them to follow off-leash like a dog. The same goes to going on bike rides. I do all of that with my 2 cats.

The problem is not the freedom but that they are territorial. I also would love to travel with my cat but I’ve tried and he didn’t like it 😢 My only chance to travel with him is when we go to the vet but he is definitely not as happy as I am 😅

What about hot weather? and over heating your cat? What about how much cat food that you have to carry with you, it can be very heavy extra weight. I have my 6 mo old kitty leash trained and she like riding in the car, but on a recumbent trike is a whole different story.

Hi there! The weather was mostly nice, and he had cover under in the trailer and I usually had the cover opened in the front, in order for him to get fresh air passing through. It all depends on how much things you have to begin with and I prioritised to have a bigger bag of cat food, then extra gear/shit for myself. So the weight was pretty low compared with other bike tourers. Good luck with your adventures with your kitten :)
