I bought a CB77 in 1967 when I was 18 for $300. Even though I knew very little about engines I read everything I could find about building up a motorcycle engine and then tore down my 305. Hot cam, had the valves enlarged and the intake path opened up, heavier valve springs, high compression pistons, racing clutch, larger sprocket on the rear wheel, and even a pair of exhaust pipes from a Triumph 650. The bike shop that did the machine work told me that if I made those mods the bike would never run again, and if it did run, I would be lucky to make it from one gas station to another. Wellll . . . when I got the parts back and reassembled the bike it fired right up on the first kick. It could turn 13,500 rpms (had to guess a little on that since the tach only read to 12k and the needle went well past that) and it got better mileage than it had originally! From a standing start it would stay with a 650 Bonneville for a block before the bigger bike could even begin to pull away. It never gave me a bit of trouble for the years I owned it. When I finally sold it to a friend of mine that begged me for it he blew the engine in the first two weeks. I have a pair of Harleys now and I'm 74 years old but I will never forget my Superhawk . . .

So, I just bought a Honda CB77 today and was looking up videos about it. First, you said your coming to Toledo to pick up yours, I was like "nice! that's where I live!" Then you show up to the guys house and it's literally the same guy! Crazy! He has many more motorcycles now after he gave me an hour tour of his 3 barns. Great guy!

In Feb. 1974, I bought my first motorcycle. I had never ridden a motorcycle, but I had ridden a mini bike. I went across town (Napa, CA) and bought the bike at a garage sale for $300. It was a 1967 Honda Super Hawk!!! The exact model you bought. It would do 90 mph, on Silverado Trail (in Napa), but with those drum brakes it would stop in probably 200 feet from 50 mph!!!! Yep, the brakes were poor, very poor... The man who sold the bike to me asked, "Have you ever ridden a motorcycle?" I said, "No." He said, "One down, 3 up that is how you shift." So, I took the bike out onto Trancas Street to Highway 29 and headed south on the highway. "License, we don't need on stinking license." I got to Maxwell Bridge that was a metal grate draw bridge and the bike wiggled like it was going down... Made it home and my mom said, "Get rid of that thing." I said, "Sorry Mom, I am 18 and headed in to the Army soon so I can't do this one for you." Went into the Army and now 44 years later, I have owned over 40 motorcycles (2 Goldwings and 2 Harleys in my garage sleeping right now!). The worst riding bike I have ever owned? That 1967 Honda Super Hawk, but because of it my brother and a couple life long friends still ride today!!!! When I went into the Army, the Super Hawk became a "hand-me-down" bike for my brother and our friends!!! So, I guess it was the BEST bike I have ever owned!!! The only problem I ever had with that bike was rust in the gas tank. Had to clean it out...

I relate to this as 20 years ago I had an old 50cc Honda moped. It had constant issues with rust in the fuel tank. Had to fix it at the side of the road lots of times. Taught me to be self sufficient as I had to fix the bike to get it to the garage as at the time I lived in a rural area on the West Coast of Scotland. Must say that it broke down in some of the most scenic areas imaginable.

The CB/CL/CA 72/77s were the epitome of Japanese 4 stroke engineering in their day. You are fortunate to have found this fairly well preserved example to have and admire. I was a technician helping a new dealership start up in Westchester Co., N. Y., and took a new CB77 as part of my wages in 1974. They are so soundly engineered, ball bearing cams for instance, and the oil pump is accessible from the bottom of the oil sump. Of all the ones we sold, mine had a failure in the transmission - a guide roller on one of the shift forks, the cases had to be split for the repair. Wish you well on yours, would enjoy having one again these many years later.

I bought my first motorcycle (1972 Honda CB750 K2) from the collector/seller in this video back in 2015. I just paid him a visit today to introduce him to a friend of mine and to show him that my bike is still on the road and going strong. He asked me if I have ever heard of the Bikes and Beards guys. I told him “Yeah, I’ve watched several of those videos on KZbin” and he then proceeded to tell me about selling this CB77. Long story short, that’s how I ended up here watching this particular video...

You're right about problematic motorcycles: it teaches you who your REAL friends are. If it wasn't for my friends I'd have been stuck in awkward situations a few times. When the phone rings I make myself available to help if I can return the favour. Money can't buy that kind of friendship.

I've been a truck driver for 30 years. Number 1, never pull over on the shoulder unless it is an absolute emergency. Take an off ramp and then pull off onto the ON RAMP shoulder if necessary. Number 2, never try and limp along at 50 when on the interstate when you could have just loaded up the bike. That was really dangerous. Number 3, dont try and take a bike you know nothing about for a shake down cruise on the interstate. I can't tell you how many bodies I've seen laying on the road because of people doing things like you guys just did. Not only could you have killed yourselves but other people as well. Ok, old man lecture over. Ya'll be well and SAFELY keep the vids coming. :)

my first "touring" bike was a 1967 Yamaha 350 twin YR1. Bought it in 1968 (left over on the showroom floor). Put a windshield on it, some funky looking saddlebags, highway pegs, and I traveled from California to Utah, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, and I had a blast doing it..... because I was young and didn't know any better. Plus no one told me I "this ain't the right bike for the job". I remember having to rebuild the top end on that thing several times. Good memories.

Bikes and Beards I didn't like it that much when I was 12. I've only gotten back into riding for a couple years now and am certainly a fair weather rider, mainly because I don't have good gear yet. I'd ask for your old gear but I'm a bit more horizontal and less vertical lol. I want to ride out to srk next year.

I know the 305 superhawk well. At age 17 and 18 I rode a 1965 superhawk a lot. It was fond memories of that bike that got me back into motorcycling last year. I'm 70yo and now have 3 bikes. A 1995 R100R bmw Mystic, a 2018 R1200RT and a 2017 Ural M-70 that my dog and i cruise around on. Having said all that, the 305 Superhawk could really go and I can remember heading down Massachusetts highways at close to 90 mph with a passenger. It was a fun little bike but wasn't little at the time. The big bikes were the 650 BSA and Triumphs and of course for the big boys, the Harleys. A lot has changed since I've been on that SuperHawk

What's the big deal. Oh, I forgot, I'm not in 1967 anymore. I'm glad that you guys are shooting this video. These bikes were one of the few choices we had back then to serve as a sport touring/daily ride. The 1/3 litre retro bikes sure are getting attention, but you wont see many on an open road like we did back then. Riding two-up into a strong headwind relegated us to third gear ops. Loved 'em.

Talk about a real adventure!! You hit a gold mine with your new friend! A treasure trove of Hondas!! Even though those bikes are old, and I'm sure each one may need something done to make it right and road ready, Wow! They bring back some memories. I've never owned one, but I sure remember seeing a lot of them back in the day. I remember a dealer in Baker Montana had several and Cool to look at! That was back in 1958 when he was doing business! The 305 dream just came out back then and was the talk of every elementary schoolboy! Honda 50s sold like fresh cooked pancakes, and had a reputation of always running and fun to scoot around town with hardly any mechanical problems! Easy to fix if they did find something to tinker with! That's so Cool you're doing this and having a blast at the same time!

I had a 305 scrambler ,my first bike, my second bike was a 305 superhawk, I never had the Honda 305 dream, I knew better. These engines were interesting in that, on the scrambler, the Pistons went up and down 180° apart. On the super hawk they went up and down together side-by-side. And fired left, then the right, then the left, then the right. I think on the 305 dream engine. They also went up and down together side-by-side but fired at the same time., Not sure, but it may have been the superhawk that had both pistons fire at the same time because it had twin carburetors, where the dream had a single carburetor. I was in love with my 305 super hawk, that was until the day I wrote a Kawasaki A7SS avenger. 350 cc Rotary valve twin. That Kawasaki avenger was dead even in multiple drag races with a yanki 396 Chevelle SS that belong to a friend of mine. Then I got what was the best 350 of the 60s It was the Bridgestone 350 GTR Rotary valve twin. That was so far ahead of Honda Yamaha Kawasaki and Suzuki. It had chrome bores, a dry clutch, six speed transmission, it would start in any gear if you pull the clutch in, it would start without a battery. But the longshoreman dock strike absolutely killed Bridgestone. There were ships offshore packed with the next years shipment of 350 and 175 Bridgestone motorcycles. But the strike lasted I think it was 68 days, they would not unload the ships, and that sunk Bridge stone. I think it would’ve been Bridgestone at the top of the heap right now if that had not happened.. that was in the late 60s, then Yamaha came out with the RD 350 in1973, and Kawasaki cameout with a three cylinder two-stroke S2... I had everyone of these motorcycles. They were cheap. Under $700. I rode raced an RD for eight years. The Kawasaki was faster , I think almost 12,000 RPM. But the Kawasaki had 2 flaws. The 73S2 had a 4 main bearing crankshaft. This caused the crankshaft flex and the thrust washers on the drive side of the crankshaft failed because of the flexing crank..Kawasaki later address this by making a crankshaft with six main bearings. But the second design flaw of the triple Kawasaki’s was, they could not survive a crash. The motor was too wide. A Yamaha RD was narrow, and you could toss it on the race track over and over and it never really damaged the motor But getting back to the Honda 305‘s. I would not put the effort in the money into resurrecting one, because, if you ride one, after getting off of one of the other machines that were available especially the two strokes. It felt like you were riding on top of the washing machine when your road the Honda compared to the others. Then Honda came out with a 350 twin. By that time I was a service mechanic at a Honda dealership. The 350 Hondas were not very well-designed. A bulletin came from Honda to all the dealerships, the bulletin said, your parts department should stock seven top and rebuilding kits, due to camshaft failures, for every 10 350 Hondasis you sell.I worked at a fairly large busy dealership that had seven mechanics, and four builders. Each mechanic was a specialist with certain machines. Mine was the 350 and 450 Hondas..I put all lotta camshafts in those things. They had no oil filter, and the cam would walk left and right in the cam bearings, and wear into the aluminum bearing housings which was very basic, it was just a block of aluminum with a hole in it, that was the bearing, for the camshaft. With no filter, all of those shavings just kept being recycled through the engine. It was pretty rare to see a 350 Honda twin with more than 10,000 miles on it that had not had a new camshaft back then. That was very surprising because of how durable and well-designed the 305 engine was.

In 1979, My Very first bike was a Barn find my Step dad brought home for $80.00 a rusty old Yellow 1966 Honda 305 Superhawk, we refurbished it together in the garage,... and then he offered to sell it to me for $375.00. I bought it. I was 15 at the time. Excellent bike. Found out that model had been known to have problems firing on both cylinders(Carb issue). Made with only 3 gears, 1 down 2 up, I would get it up to 75 in 2nd and then switch to 3rd. Got 6 tickets on that bike before I got my first Drivers license. Great bike. Great memories.... Watch out that you don't short the battery with the seat LOL. Drum Brakes...ooof. Mine didn't have electric start..only kick.

That bike is great bike. My best friend had the Superhawk and we rode the shit out of it. I remember us riding a fire road two up (we were 15 yrs old and not licensed) one time at 100 mph. The only thing better were the Norton’s Triumphs and BSA’s. I’d love to own one. 😎

This us where a weird single rear wheel, normal height/length hauler would be clutch. NYC is bad enough in a normal car but fuck me if have a trailer or dually or am over 24' long.

When the man was giving reasons why not to look at the bike that night, I was thinking "He doesn't want to do it." After seeing his garage, I confirmed mt suspicion while remembering he said "the lighting is bad in my garage." 😂

I think there is a whole club race based around this bike. At least on the west coast. It’s hard to find. All the racers bought them. I’ve been looking for one locally for 10 years or so.

I've never bid on eBay before, so why was the bid $1,300 when you bid $2,000? Did you end up having to pay $2k or just the $1,300?
