I’ve been using a Restrap bag for 6 months, and it’s great. Due to the steep angle of my bike’s toptube, items tend to slide towards my seatpost. To stop this, I made two dividers out of old bank cards, folding their short edges and fixing in place with Velcro - works a treat and gives the bag walls more support.

I used a full Restrap top tube bag on the GDMBR this year. It was great once you got used to tipping the bike a little bit when you stop riding. Losing the stand over clearance was my biggest concern but it really wasn't that big of a deal once you got used to it. It provided a lot of extra space for camera gear or light extra gloves along with standard snacks.
@OutsidevilleКүн бұрын
Is it trickier to get to snacks while riding? Or with one long zipper do you have things bounce out while you reach for those yummy gummy bears?
@adoj105Күн бұрын
@@Outsideville I didn't have any issues. It zipped from both sides so I could grab the zipper that was best and the bag keeps its shape with the plastic sides and the top comes in a fair bit so even when it's unzipped everything is still pretty protected. Things did have a tendency to slide back though. Heavier cylindrical items did end up in the back.

My alternative recommendation: [Certainly no cheaper option, but because aesthetically I prefer horizontal top tubes,... ] I simply distribute the volume onto two smaller TTbags. The rear one, mounted inversed under the saddle, makes nearly perfect use of the space (could be higher). This combination leaves me the space exactly where I need it when stepping off.

Long legs and a slanted top tube already challenge my stand over ability. And the idea of choosing a bike to fit the bag, as opposed to the other way around, is wroooong. At 3:25 I’m missing something. The bike has a rack, racks take panniers. Why risk crotch contact when there is an alternative.
@OutsidevilleКүн бұрын
@@TheRflynn Thanks for sharing your perspective! My frame choice balances stand-over comfort with a geometry that suits my needs for loading and handling. While it might not work for everyone, it’s been a great fit for me.

I made myself a full length top tube bag and have been using for over a year on my Hightower. I think this type of bag works well with full sus where the sloping top tube provides ample stand over height. I’m able to slip a full sized Nalgene at the base under the nose of my saddle and still have tons of room for up front. I’m flat I used a large molded zipper as I tend to stuff it quite full. The only issue I’ve had is slight knee rub on the bag. I now wear sun sleeves over my knees to negate the contact. I like that this system is light and makes running a large rear bag/rack unnecessary. It is surprising that a manufacturer would spec small coil zippers on bikepacking bags. I would definitely be worried about reliable while deep in the bush.

I’m a big fan of a long top tube bag, for ultra events they are so useful and it’s the best location for all the small bits and bobs and snacks you want close at hand. I have both the 1.5L and 2L Restrap Race top tube bags which have been great. But I recently switched over to Tailfin bags and have just ordered their long 2.2L bag today which looks amazing, I already have their small 0.8L one so I’m certain I’ll like the new one. Though I will miss the elastic mesh sections on the sides of the Restrap bags which are so useful

If your bike has a sloping top tube, like my rigid mountain bike, your frame bag is really limited. I like the idea of a bigger top tube bag. More storage and your standover doesn't get outrageous. Now I want more than two direct mounting bolts.

awesome you stressed the zipper types, they are the weak link for every bike bag, tent, and jacket I have ever owned. I will take big clunky one handed operation zips that are fine with being over stuffed every time even at the expense of water tightness over the small toothed weather sealed ones... easy enough to use cheap dry bags inside on them for anything that cant get wet. Nothing is really water proof anyway, once you get a season or so most things tend to get far less water resistant.
@AndrewSteavpackКүн бұрын
I’m surprised people don’t like its appearance. I like the half frame bag allowing water bottle cage use and find the full frame bag takes away from the bikes shape and aesthetic. Also much more usable on full sus frames, my Ibis in particular.

Nope, not for me. Even regular top tube bags are a mild annoyance when pedaling out of the saddle and standing over the bike in general, the full length ones would be a nightmare. They're also quite expensive for an objectively very small storage space...150 USD for 3 liters? That's nuts.

Too much fuss and fiddle with frame bag systems hauling gear. They're fine if you're fast enough to cover big distances between resupply if you're racing. Otherwise, racks and panniers are simple, durable, no zippers, more capacity, easier organization. Comparing weights vs frame bags, I got 1.4 pounds more total weight for racks, panniers, front and rear (weighed both sets of mine). Bonus, weight is centered lower on the bike with panniers. Contrary to recent belief you do not have to fill panniers, but the capacity is there when you want to haul something special into camp like water or beer. Happy trails ☮
