1997 was not a twin cam engine it was the evolution design.. totally not anything like in this video.. your oil pump is located Outside of the engine case on right sight behind timing gear cover and was of melling design. twin cam engines use an internal pump of a Gerotor design... The fix for TC motors is a gear drive system rather then chain and tensioners that stretch and wear allowing slap that then snowballs into other damage. The Gear drive is a Screaming Eagle mod and many after market mfgrs also sell it. once converted you'll not have another inner cam bearing failure or the other damage that occurs with chain and tensioner failure. FYI when doing the conversion also change out the inner bearings since the originals are already being damaged by the chain drive system... Have Nice day. Nutz & Voltz service & repair and custom builds...

Find a parking lot and just keep doing figure 8's til you grind the edges off. A bike ain't no good if you can't do full lock turns. ( I used to ride with a Shrine Motor Patrol ) I used a Yamaha VStar 1100 though. It's got a terrible clutch and a bad engine flaw too...but I could pull a tighter turn than the Ultra glides so we worked out some 'opposite direction" figure 8's and other scary looking things where I was making a circle inside theirs. Sadly that's a common story from that specific dealership. Pretty much the only reason they stay in business because they are right off the interstate. Most people around here try to avoid them if they can. I've heard of nothing but trouble from them. At least the engine had actually failed, instead of something minor they blew out of proportion.
@2amoto5 жыл бұрын
See here's the rub to the entire thing, and I hope Keith actually sees this as well as this channel; of course the HD dealer is going to say that he got screwed by the dealer he bought from. They hoped to convince him to buy an entirely new bike, which they make great profit on, take in his bike if he's lucky for a $500 trade toward the new one then turn around and spend maybe $1000 on a new motor (they are a HD dealer/shop cost) for it or just replace the crank case and then turn around and sell the bike for upwards of $15,000 - $18,000, all the while trashing a business they do not know nor care about and in the long run end up actually royally screwing Keith over. That is the massive pit that is typical dealership etiquette. No respect for each other nor anyone else, and even less for the customers.

You guys did a great job of customer service on that one. The issue is that the bearing, as others have commented already, is easily replaceable with the proper tools. I upgraded a friend's 88TC to 95ci a while back and upgraded to gear drive S&S cams while we were at it. They came with the better quality Torrington cam bearings to replace the weak INA factory units. Using a Jim's bearing tool, we pulled them right out of the case with no drama. Used an arbor press to replace the outer ones. As long as the damage was limited to that area of the engine, it should have been repairable and even stronger and more durable than before with the good Torrington parts installed.

Twin Cam had almost 20 years of production, in every bike other then the sportster that Harley made, so how many are on the road? far too many to count. So, the cam tensioner shoes have a 25k service/replace. They also wear faster when people do NOT change their oil, when people do NOT use a quality oil, and when you let a bike sit for extended time without changing oil, (Motor oil does have a shelf life, so if you ride 500 miles a year, change every 3000 miles, bet your last $1 your oil is bad or near bad regardless, since it will take 6 years to hit 3000 miles.). The inner bearings are 100% serviceable/replaceable, and NEVER ask the dealer to do it (My certified HD mechanic $500, my dealer, $1400, both certified by HD not difficult math!) Do not waste $$ for hydraulic upgrade if you have spring tensioners, $1000 for few thousand miles over 25k in shoe life, not worth it. SS makes gear drive, so go big or stay home and save pennies for new shoes every 25k, do not skimp on oil, buy quality oil, and price does not always mean it is better. I would use Mobil 1 synthetic before Lucas, Redline, Royal Purple etc. Side note, you want to buy any twin cam HD? What is the mileage? Most likely if it is a touch over 25k, 50k, 75k etc, the owner of that bike been to the dealer, was told $1400 in cam tensioner shoe repairs, and is now trying to pass that repair to a new owner. $9 gasket, set of torx (allen key torx may be best depending on exhaust), and check them out before you buy a twin cam! Oil loss is minimal opening the cam cover, literally less then a shot glass full, and you can see the shoes, look for pieces of the shoes in the cam chest, and know if you got cam shoes to repair or not. That $9 now let you negotiate $1000+ off the price. In truth, there are countless twin cams on the streets today, many over 100k miles. They last forever with care and maintenance just like any and everything else.

That same thing happened to me on a 2000 Road King. I was in Tuscaloosa Alabama which is about 12 hours from my home near Tampa Fl. It had spun the rear inner cam bearing instead of the front one like yours did. The cases do not have to be replaced, they can be fixed better than new. With mine being a 2000 block it still had the left side Timken bearings for the crank which they discontinued in '03 so it was highly desirable to fix mine instead of replacing. I sent the cases to someplace in Wisconson who repaired that race and did some crank work while they had it. Built it back to a 100 HP 95" that was too much fun to ride. I did all the work myself and still had around $2,800 in the repair/build. Rode that one for about 4 more years and had 130,000 on the frame when I sold it.

I got mine because it was within my price range and it was what I was looking for, I would have no problem riding another brand. My 2013 Heritage Classic that I bought factory new and had one mile on it, didn't make it to 4900 miles due to an oiling problem. You should have taken it to an authorized HD dealer..." The bike was out of warranty and the nearest HD dealer is over two hours away. Instead I took it to an independent, and the owner has been a Harley mechanic for over thirty years and both of his mechanics have been working on HD's for about 25 years combined. I'm now on the hook for about 4 thousand dollars for a new/used motor. I'll never by another Harley. They are too concerned with selling the bullshit narrative that Harley Davidson walks on water.

Another example of problems with HD motors that just shouldn't be happening. Either the engineering is poor or the parts are inferior or the manufacturing processes are faulty. It's really too bad that HD refuses to move their engine design to the next modern level. For every 2 or 3 HD riders who claim that their HD is reliable there is a rider with a horror story and that's just not good enough. Fortunately for this rider he bought his bike from a top notch dealer but not everyone is so fortunate. I have had 5 motorcycles during my lifetime but never a HD - I have the money now to buy any bike I want but I'm reluctant to buy a HD - I've been told by so many riders , they are expensive buy and just as expensive to maintain with unexpected repairs. Why can't HD build reliability into their bikes ?
@78recorddude6 жыл бұрын
I have owned four HD's with zero breakdowns or mechanical problems, two Ducatis, one BMW and 32 Japanese bikes over the years. The HD's were the most reliable of all of these bikes. One thing every informed HD owner knows is the need to keep an eye on the cam chain tensioners in the post-evolution designs. Neglect them and they will fail causing the catastrophic engine failure described in the video. It is baffling to me, that a reputable shop selling these bikes would send them out the door without either 1) verifying the accuracy of miles each bike has run and 2) verifying that the cam chain tensioners were replaced if the bike had run beyond their expected service life and 3) doing this simple job if they have not been replaced. Harley engines are good for well over 100,000 miles given proper maintenance. There's simply no need for this type of premature engine failure.
@buckhorncortez6 жыл бұрын
The did move the engine design to the next modern level - it was called the Revolution engine, co-designed with Porsche. Liquid cooled, dual overhead cam, four valves per cylinder. Harley aficionados, apparently, weren't interested in that kind of motor.

The manual clearly states that if the cams are removed for any reason that the cam bearings be replaced. Most techs do not have the cam bearing removal tool .A good dealer would have the Timken Upgrade that has been recommended since 1999. Most of the knowledgeable tech's are either dead or have retired. Its been common knowledge since about 2000 that the cam bearings are cheap, the composite tensioners flake off small pieces that clog your oil pump ports, and most High mileage riders replace the tensioners around 25 to 30 thousand miles if they have no symptoms. S&S makes a gear replacement kit with new cams. No chains! The dealers are good for basic service and accessory installs, Oh and Parties.

Cam tensioner typically needed to be replaced at 25K-50K miles. Mine were done on an '05 Ultra (88 CI) at about 30K and they looked perfectly new-thanks Amsoil. 2015 Limited with 103 No issues at 32K. 2018 Limited 107 No issues at 13K so far. Lots of HD out there with 50K-80K with no issues. Regular maintenance and fluid changes are necessary. New HD come with unlimited mileage two year warranty. Spend the money for the extended factory warranty, or take your chances. Any used vehicle is a crap shoot, but a good Harley Mechanic can tell you what to look and listen for.

I bought a used Ultra with the twin cam 88 with 65,000 miles on it and the cam chest was the first thing I had to get rebuilt within two weeks, I think it was all original because one of the tensioner plastic pads was completely gone. Needless to say, new bearings, chains, tensioners, push rods, cams, lifters and an oil change, I had them replace everything new except the oil pump, he had one with a couple thousand miles on it and put it in to save me a few bucks. I got the bike on the cheap so I wasn't too bummed about it, I was actually glad I had it fixed, I've heard horror stories about how terribly wrong things can go when they eat a bearing or break a chain. Looks like that one might be able to be saved. Mine has been great in the cam chest but has had to have the fuel injectors changed, both tires and now the charging system is giving me hell. I've replaced the battery twice, the voltage regulator twice, and the rotor and stator twice within 500 miles or less and guess what... you got it, IT'S NOT CHARGING AGAIN!!! Any suggestions would be great, I'm pulling my hair out here!!! It's been down since April and I don't have the cash to take it in to the shop.
@rubo19646 жыл бұрын
I would check the wiring specially from stator.Make sure all fuses are good.Its a good idea to run a wire directly from stator to regulator.Sometimes there is a plug in between and these plugs are known to melt down.Carefully inspect all wiring from charging system before taking to a dealer.My VFR800 had fried plug which took out the regulator and direct connection with heavier gauge wire from stator to regulator solved my issue.Good luck
@jeffl48306 жыл бұрын
Those plugs have been a problem since the early days of the Honda V4. I removed the connector on my '83 and soldered each wire together, and have had no heating issues since. Strange that Honda has never settled that issue once and for all.

I like Harley. I had one. But seeing an early twin cam self destructing is not a surprise... And 15 years later they’re still doing it. A Friends owned from new, fully serviced ‘not thrashed’ LowriderS dropped its guts in the same way at 30k miles 2 weeks out of warrantee and Harley Corp didn’t lift a finger. A cam let go and took the crank with it. His dealer (who said it’s down to cheaply made internals) rebuilt it using improved parts at cost for him (still $4k!) but that’s a life long Harley owner finished with the brand. Sold his Harley’s and moved on. It’s always the dealers in America that have a great reputation but Harley Corp are just money grabbing shysters overcharging for a cheap second rate product. The last decent engine was the evo. They need to look out. Indian are starting to pull away. And they don’t have imploding engines...

The problem I have with Indian is Polaris. Polaris screwed it's Victory Customers because Victory was competing with Indian. Worse is Polaris refuses to open source it's parts so Victory customers could get aftermarket parts for their Victory Bikes after 10 years. They "think" screwed Victory customers will but Indians once support ends. I can tell everyone that after the screwing they got from Polaris they would not take anything from Polaris if it were given to them.

@hollowaysteve: That's unfortunate your friend went through that. I'm wondering if he did the preventive maintenance. I don't know when the cam chain tensioner requires inspection. It could be at 30K miles.
@hollowaysteve6 жыл бұрын
Filippo Corti You read the bit where I mentioned ‘Owned from new, fully serviced’ ? It was fully maintained by the supplying ‘Harley Davidson main dealer’ That ‘is’ preventative maintenance. His is not the only one to have problems. The CVO engines are trouble, the TC88 problems are well know and proliferate. All the later ‘twin cam’ engines also have similar (if not quite so devastating) problems as the 88.

My bike is a twin cam 88. The first things i did was upgrade the cam bearings and chain shoes. They are TIME BOMBS and should have been a recall.
@halnwheels6 жыл бұрын
I had my H-D dealer do the upgrade at 43k miles. At 70k miles the cam bearings self destructed. So the cam bearings only lasted 30k miles. Had the dealer do the long block program and at 750 miles the main left side main bearing failed. H-D instructed the dealer to rebuild the engine. Now I have 94K on the bike and it seems to be good. H-D had really better think about some basic values before thinking they have a demographic issue.

while that was catastrophic, it is not engine failure. the cam bearings are definitely replaceable, the removal and install tools are available from harley. how can two dealers not know this? cam bearings fail, they are not made permanently into the case. now if the bearing imploded, and sent metal thru the oil pump and into the engine, it all has to come apart, the bearings replace, (not with cheap harley bearings, rather with jims quality bearings, perhaps a new oil pump, and clean and inspect.

Uh...I think the whole cam bearing body...the "cage" I think they call it, the "body" that holds the bearings, that is actually shoved into the casing somehow got loose and starting riding around it's "home" in the casing like Sean said which sort of wallared the casing out making it too big, out of shape, out of round, etc and because of all that wallerin' a new cam won't fit......gotta get new casings.
@whalesong9996 жыл бұрын
@@cb750k1974 Ugh, that's a miserable condition. I don't recall the mileage being mentioned on this machine so if low mileage, it doesn't sound well for the design or upkeep. Edit: Those bearings look like the most simple kind of Torrington uncaged - meaning there is no cage separating the needle/rollers - archaic and not long lived. The outer race/shell is not hard or durable enough for that application, IIRC. Only application I recall seeing this used was the transmission of a B44 BSA transmission where the rotating speed was much less and there was a constant bath of oil. If there is no pressure oiling to that bearing in the H-D, it would be surviving on just a passive splash and that, to me, is inadequate.
@rxheaven13b6 жыл бұрын
most HD dealers don't work on their engines. You have to go to one of the few "big" shops that have trained techs that do engine repair.
@patrioticmillennial27474 жыл бұрын
The cam bearings can be replaced in a TC-88, just this specific situation is a tough one. The only issues I could forsee is if that old bearing walked its way out, the cam journal might be a slightly bigger or even egg shaped from that old bearing walking its way out slowly over time. You'd basically need to mic the journal and make sure it's not egg shaped and then use a slightly oversized bearing. It would have to be a perfect fit though because if it was too loose, the bearing will just walk out again after thermal expansion. And if it's too tight, hairline cracks could develop during installation and crack the case. It's a real tricky situation in this case. But also, think about the small metal shavings from that cam journal that have been running through the rod bearings and all those little needle bearings. Nothing really you can do there, but just some food for thought, hopefully the filter caught everything. It sounds like one of three things, either the dealer didn't want to risk that tricky install of an oversized bearing, which is understandable. The cam journal was egg shaped which at that point there really isn't anything you can do except tear down the case and machine that journal. Or they just didn't want to deal with the hassle and would rather upsell the guy into a brand new engine.

What I can tell you about the reputation of Harleys in northern Germany: Shaky, screw-loosing and oil burning/spitting bikes for rich old men who don't like to turn a screw by themselves. Driving only very short distances in the sunshine just for the chrome-show, they don't have to care about the price of some over-expansive repairs every few weeks. Surely prejudices i guess, but good reliability is no part of the reputation, thats for sure. I’m sure over there in Germany there are millions of Mercedes driving around racking up trouble free miles, just as their are Harley’s in the US. They do vibrate but a lot of that seems to go with the experience, they are not luxury bikes really, if you want a quiet smooth advanced motorcycle there are better options.
