True. The family law bar is the only winner in a divorce, though -- since the Gates' kids are all over 18 -- at least the painful issues of custody & parenting time are not going to be litigated. I tried my hand at family law when I first entered private practice: Even telling a client that s/he will likely spend a decade in prison is preferable to explaining to a client that his/her time with the children will be limited.

@@LamLawIndy My father worked as a court appointed mediator in family court mediation and often suggested that certain divorce attorneys that frequently came through his offices would purposely undermine mediation because it resulted in more billable hours. He would take me to work when I didn't have school sometimes, and I remember he was talking about one lawyer to another person in his department, when a judge who had overheard the conversation stuck his head in the door and said he thought another attorney whom he was known to clash with in court was really working with him so they both could bill more hours. Could they be disbarred over ethics for that? I know it'd be hard to prove, they'd just say they were representing their clients best interests. Would the The Bar even care?

@pulynanyalikibitz1301 3 жыл бұрын
@@LamLawIndy also, not that it really matters, but two of his kids live at home. The youngest is only 17, technically there would be some talk of custody, but that would only be subject to a few months of enforcement. The middle child is about to get married. She's probably moving out anyway.

Phoebe, Bill and Melinda's youngest child turned 18 in September 2020. My guess is at that time Melinda went to Bill and started working out the contract for their divorce. Once Phoebe turned 18, there were no custody issues so it made sense to wait until that time. After the specifics of their divorce were worked out (which would take a number of months or even a year because of their immense assets plus no pre-nup) they officially filed for divorce. Realistically speaking, I'm sure the marriage has been over for a long time. This is all conjecture on my part, but it makes sense. These situations are all about negotiation. The uber rich live different lives than the average person.

@@seriouslyjoking2 That is the problem. Nobody wants to put in the work and now there is a whole trending idea being pushed that says monogamy is not natural and it is impossible to achieve. They are encouraging people to ignore their marriage vows (and other people's) because "it is not possible". They cite the high divorce rate as their proof so they have got a handy little self-fulfilling prophesy going now. Encourage people to cheat on their partners and then cite the rising divorce rate as proof that they were justified in cheating and getting divorced. Brilliant. Lets encourage everyone to worry about nothing and no one except themselves that should make for a really happy society right? I'm sorry, but the self-absorbed, short-sighted immaturity of what passes for adults in this country is starting to wear on me.

When she found out she was told it was too late to stop the wedding as her ‘face was on the tea-towels ‘ And she was told by the Queen Mum not to worry as it was just a fling and Charles was going to dump Camilla once he married. Diana was young and naive . The woman who married Gates knew before she married him that he was going to keep seeing his girlfriend . She obviously married him for his money imo. Why didn’t he marry his girlfriend ? You’re right maybe the wife had enough ! Maybe they had an open relationship and she met someone else she wanted to be with ?

@Taiwo Omotosho I’d rather be rich and unhappy than poor and unhappy.! Lol! Seriously though , Poverty and lack of money doesn’t buy happiness either. People throughout the world are d.ying because they have no money to buy food and fresh , clean water . Many people are miserable without money too and many people have money worries . We’re all told that money doesn’t buy happiness but I don’t see the rich giving away their money to be happy! In fact they just look for opportunities just to make more money. Money gives you the freedom to live your life as you want . Eg If you want to be an artist , you can , you don’t have to worry about the bills . If you want to travel you can. Money buys power and respect . People don’t respect the homeless guy begging for money in the street . Money isn’t everything in life but it’s darn important and great to have imo .

People divorce and remarry at all stages of life. I met a fellow several months back who found new love again at age 90 and couldn’t be happier. I would think it would be a lonelier existence continuing life with a partner one has grown apart from, perhaps married for the wrong reasons or any number of scenarios. I think the pandemic woke a lot of people up to the fact that life is too short to feel bound to the wrong person for them, across all age groups and income levels. People have been shaken out of complacency and are looking at their lives with new eyes and new mindsets, and as a result a huge shift is happening. We will see many more of these announcements in the coming months, whether it’s celebrities or the nice couple down the street in your neighborhood that no one would ever imagine would split up. I remember reading a story of a couple who were 'celebrating' their 50th wedding anniversary. With the whole family and several friends, the wife declared that she was filing for divorce. She had put up with her husband for 50 years and was NOT going to do it one more day!

@@brilliantdiva5068 She must have been miserable enough to go that way. I thought it was an odd decision, too. I can't even imagine what the whole family felt about it! That changed their lives, as well. I knew a wonderful couple that had been married for 75 years. He had cancer and decided that at his age, he wasn't going to fight it. After he died, his wife just withered away. To be together for so many years, then one is gone, it would be like half of you is missing. These beautiful people were treasures of our community. We were all devastated by their loss.

Yes, I wonder about that as well. They shared 1 weekend a year for 27 years. In that time did she not have a husband or any other close relationship that the partner would not object to this yearly weekend folly? Unless I was a gold digger I could never have a relationship like that, it would be unsustainable.

I remember when they were first married, I heard that was part of their contract. When I didn't hear anything more about it, I figured it had just been a rumor. The other rumor was that Bill's mother, Mary, picked Melinda for Bill, or at least approved her. Melinda was very similar to his his mother, and they were great friends. Talk about Seattle royalty! I am actually happy for them both, only hope that their kids are dealing with it. You NEVER see or hear anything about them.

I can't help but wonder how that conversation went when Bill was like "Melissa, I love you and want you to be my wife forever, but do you mind if I plan an annual weekend trip with my ex? It'll just be the two of us, but I promise it's strictly platonic. No hanky panky.".

I'm a 39-year old woman and I have plenty of pure platonic friendships with men. I would never think of making that physical. We often have very stimulating conversations. I have a very high IQ so for me that's kind of "essential" to be happy in life. So I would understand that arrangement. And before you ask: I'm called "very beautiful" by plenty of people so it's not for a lack of interrest.
