In 2008, William Browder’s lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, uncovered a massive fraud committed by Russian government officials that involved the theft of US $230 million of state taxes. Sergei testified against state officials involved in this fraud and was subsequently arrested, imprisoned without trial and systematically tortured. He spent a year in prison under horrific detention conditions, was repeatedly denied medical treatment, and died in prison on November 16, 2009, leaving behind a wife and two children.
Since then, Browder has sought justice outside of Russia and started a global campaign for governments around the world to impose targeted visa bans and asset freezes on human rights abusers and highly corrupt officials. The United States was the first to impose these targeted sanctions with the passage of the Sergei Magnitsky Accountability Act in 2012, followed by the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act in 2016. Since then, Canada, United Kingdom, the Baltic states, the European Union and most recently Australia, have passed their own versions of the Magnitsky Act. Mr. Browder is currently working to have similar legislation passed in other countries worldwide including New Zealand and Japan, to name a few.
Browder published his first book “Red Notice: A True Story of High Finance, Murder, and One Man’s Fight for Justice” in February 2015. A New York Time bestseller, the book focuses on Browder’s years spent in Russia, the Russian government’s attacks on Hermitage Capital Management and his responses to Russian corruption and his support of the investigation into the death of his attorney Sergei Magnitsky. A TV series, based on the book, is in development.
His second book “Freezing Order: A True Story of Money Laundering, Murder, and Surviving Vladimir Putin’s Wrath” was released in April 2022.

it's utterly horrible in my mind: Here we have a nation (Ukraine) willing to fight, bleed and die for the values that the west hold so dear. And we're not even capable to give them what they ask for??? Not a single US or NATO soldier has to die. Not a single person has to be injured, except for those who are willing to sacrifice their lives to beat the russians. And that's Ukraine. I think it's incredibly shameful for british leaders or ANY leaders to give the ukrainians a hard time if the keep screaming for more support.

It IS fiction. You should see the respected German publication Der Spiegel's investigation on Browder's book. In short, it simply didn't pass proper investigative scrutiny. He complained to the Press Council, upon which Der Spiegel started to publish the deeper results of their investigations, and invited Broder to take them to court to allow full discovery. He couldn't run away fast enough. Browder is a liar and a deep state hack, don't fall for it.

You forgot to say many important things that do not fit your story. Russia has been attached to the US $ at a fixed exchange rate (just like Argentina)and when they disconnected that monetary system they started their growth because before it was not a good monetary system. 3 oil refineries that were sold for the price of peanuts have been bought by Chevron. As a matter of fact, Chevron sent one of its American oil engineers to decide the price. Putin, once he became president, decided to investigate deep into this seal and realized that they lost 3 refineries because Yeltsin was a corrupted liberals president. Putin bought the 3 refineries back. One of the oligarchs was involved with his name as owner but the real owner was Chevron. These are very important points to reveal to understand the all story.

This forced capitalization that Bill is mentioning occurred in other former communist states as well, some outside the USSR. The political elite in those countries profited of this (and perhaps triggered the phenomena) and their ofsprings are ruling there at the moment. Some EU countries fall in this category unfortunately (fortunately for Russia though).

I'm not a fan of US foreign policy either. But NATO... any state who needs to have safety guarantees from their larger and more powerful neighbors can apply for membership in NATO if they want. And because Russia act in the way they do.... the old Warsaw pact countries wanted protection against Russia. That is NOT the fault of NATO. That is the fault of Russia to a huge huge degree, or (If you will) the fault of all those smaller nations who wanted to split away from the east and move closer to the more open doctrines of the west. I don't think it's up to Russia, US or China to dictate how Hungary, Poland, Romania or the Baltics should do their foreign policies and safety policies. That wouldn't be ok in m y opinion. And it definately wouldn't be supporting the sovereignty of smaller nations that once was a part of a bigger empire. Wheather it's north african country Tunisia (where France ruled up til the 1950s) or for example Lithuania (where the Sovjet state ruled up til 1991) Peace.
@PyeHillFarm
@PyeHillFarm 7 ай бұрын
I mostly agree with you. Having specialised in this topic for my degree I became very familiar with the post soviet trajectories of the former satellite states and have a lot of sympathy with them (I even live in one now). However the the structural power plays and spheres of influence have to be analysed in the context of all parties involved, not just the west. Most of the central and Eastern European states sought closer ties to the west after the soviet collapse - that was only natural as they had been on that trajectory prior to WW2 and had half a century of Russian exploitation, abuse and dominance post WW2. Post soviet Russia pretty much accepted this for various reasons but more recently with the potential of Ukraine and Georgia joining NATO the Russians have voiced legitimate security concerns. (NATO has also been more of an aggressor than a defensive power since the end of the Cold War) I recommend having a look at several lectures and publications on this by pre-eminent International Relations expert - starting with Prof. John Mearsheimer. The Russian invasion was avoidable and predictable (in fact it WAS predicted) compare how Russia views NATO on its border positioning missiles capable of striking Moscow with the Cuban missile crisis - it's exactly the same. America would not accept soviet missiles in Cuba and today's Russia cannot accept Biden's missiles in Ukraine - simple. Peace yes I agree, but American and British arms manufacturers are making far too much money to allow that.

What part of Russia is a "dictatorship" do too many people not understand? 'Dictatorships...' don't even allow their own people to speak out, or know the truth! So why on earth would think for a moment they would tell "you" the truth? If a Russian person even calls this a 'war...' they can face upwards of "10 years" or more in jail, or worse be murdered by the regime. Putin has said this 'war...' has to be called a "special military operation." Russian soldiers are brutalised, lied to and tortured by their own government. The families how lose loved ones, few get the death payments promised them, and soldiers themselves are left often with no pay or weapons with substandard equipment, which left many to freeze to death in winter. There are no free fair elections in Russia under Putin - all free media and political opposition has been shut down, journalists, politicians and ordinary people - imprisoned or murdered! Many have been taken in by Russian disinformation: by the way it was Russia under Stalin and the KGB in 1923 which arrived at the concept and coined the word 'disinformation!' They even gave it a Western sounding name, so we would more easily adopt it... so that worked? Putin has murdered "100 000s" of people in Chechnya, Georgia, Syria, Moldova, Belarus and Ukraine and elsewhere in the world. Syria, was a people's uprising as a result of the Arab Spring, which began in Tunisia in 2010, as a result Assad slaughtered peaceful protesters with gunships. The people fought bravely for years, but when Damascus was about to fall, Assad called in Putin. Assad and Putin then murdered "100 000s" of people, dropping bombs on children in their schools, burning them alive! In Russia itself, if people even call the Ukraine Russia War, a "war..." they can face up to "10 years" in jail, or if someone is a high profile politician or public figure, then can be imprisoned or even murdered. A recent UN stated the in a terror campaign orchestrated by Putin... "children" as young as '4' years old are being tortured and raped. We must act to stop this, and support the people of Ukraine to ensure this ends... in defeating the Putin Regime this could be a turning corner for humanity, in our search to end war, and all injustice? @@giselapfeifer4666

Hesitation to help Ukraine from NATO will be a big mistake later on to all the Europeans countries and they will face the terrible consequences in the future if Ukraine couldn’t win the invasion war from Russia. The longueur they let this unprovoked war slide the worse events they will receive later because the sick man wouldn’t give up easily even the whole world have condemned so far in United Nation.

It is essential to acknowledge that this conflict is unlikely to reach a resolution unless actions are taken against Russia and its capital, Moscow. From Putin's perspective, it may seem like a strategic move in a more giant geopolitical game. Given his status as an ICC war criminal, he might continue these actions until he finds a secure place to comfortably retire, with financial resources not a significant barrier. It appears that Putin's future in Russia is uncertain, reminiscent of Idi Amin, who eventually sought refuge in various countries, including Libya, Iraq, and ultimately Saudi Arabia, where he lived until his passing in 2003. Nevertheless, Ukraine must put an end to this costly conflict.

Bill Brouder parlez un peu du colonisation de la France en Afrique, Poutine defend son pays contre Nato pushing his borders vers la Russie
@harrypalmer3481
@harrypalmer3481 8 ай бұрын
I agree that much of colonisation & has been a terrible thing overall. The world has & is changing. Respectfully, I would implore you to base what you discover to be genuinely fact based. Putin’s motivations have nothing to do with the (tribal) expanding Nato boarders argument, it’s a ‘red herring’ argument. Putin has stolen trillions off his own people & turned Russia into nothing more than a petty, mafia state. Putin is exploiting African countries too, along with Russian mercenary armies, Wagner mercenaries being/having been the most prominent. Putin has & is destroying Russia & several other countries. Russia is the new coloniser. Putin doesn’t even care about that, he just to keep wars going to save his own neck now. I wish for African, countries, & all countries for that matter, to become independent, prosperous, functioning democracies. Going by ‘Our World In Data’, things had seemed to be going more or less in the right direction for some of the past several years. Admittedly often 3 steps forward, 2 steps back, but still, overall in decades, better, “better is good”? Trying to advance by scorched earth warfare, mafia politics & ‘Us & Them’ tribal shit of say, West & East doesn’t seemed to have achieved much other than industrial scale: murder (genocide), rape, torture, abduction of children, ecocide, - or has it?
