Just worth noting that through Microsoft’s massive stake in ChatGPT and other AI interests, Bill Gates has already a vested stake and a conflict of interest in AI regulation. I think it's important for people to understand (right now especially) a very important distinction: that the current AI applications don't have, and even AI alone by definition doesn't imply, any kind sentience or consciousness. In other words, though extremely "smart" and powerful, current AI like what powers ChatGPT is not "alive". It's not even "artificially alive". It seems counterintuitive that a program can be "intelligent" to the point that what it outputs is sometimes indistinguishable from what a genius human would respond with to some prompt, and yet still have no self-awareness or agency. But that is the case.There are projects out there currently working on incorporating the tech that powers ChatGPT into agent-like applications which are given a task to accomplish along with certain preconfigured capabilities (like browsing the web or accessing certain other applications), but even those agent programs are not sentient or conscious, they're just programs using the GPT AI technology, giving it some inputs and trying to make use of the outputs. I can't say how far we are from artificial sentience, but that is a whole different beast so to speak with way more serious ethical and safety concerns, and perhaps may never be developed. As an example ethical dilemma, if something is truly sentient and has any self-interest or self-preservation concept, then it is ethically wrong for it not to be free and have rights just like any person. But then Hollywood scenarios come into play, where we could have created and unleashed a digital life form with interests counter to our own that could be so much smarter that it could really have a chance at taking over the world depending on its capabilities. BUT, like I said, that's NOT what we're dealing with now at all. So long story short, don't confuse Hollywood depictions of AI with what we have right now. However, it is certainly possible that in the future an artificial sentience could be developed, but if so likely illegally; though it's definitely a pandora's box. For now though, the main concerns are about this super-powerful intelligence tech like ChatGPT being utilized by bad actors. I hope that clears some things up for anyone who read this far, lol.
