Russell was a better defender, better rebounder, better leader, and better passer for his position than any shooting guard Nike marketed in the 80s and 90s.

Wow. That was such a great interview. I never thought about the big O being the greatest of all time but when you average a triple double, that argument makes sense!
@BulletBill-yb3ti
@BulletBill-yb3ti 3 ай бұрын
Oscar has an argument as being the best overall offensive player ever. His combination of shooting, driving to the rim, ball control, and passing is up there with anyone. Then you add on that he was a great rebounder.

@genehornung3295 What was his team's record when he achieved a triple double?
@leestamm3187
@leestamm3187 3 ай бұрын
@genehornung3295 A player could average 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists per game without dominating or carrying the team. Trouble is, that's not the way it usually works.
@leestamm3187
@leestamm3187 3 ай бұрын
@genehornung3295 Exactly. It's what I meant by "that's not the way it usually works." Sound fundamentals, which I don't often see anymore, should move the ball to achieve the best scoring opportunity. Unfortunately, that style of half court offense is largely out of fashion. Good passing to get a high percentage shot doesn't have enough flash for the highlight show.
@BulletBill-yb3ti
@BulletBill-yb3ti 2 ай бұрын
@genehornung3295 Whether you want that to be the point or not, you are pushing the narrative that a player averaging a trip dub is a bad thing for the team. Therefore, a logical follow up to that would be to ask if it actually was bad for the team in the win-loss column. A player can say "triple double bad!" and you can say "it means the other teammates were weak!" but if the team is performing well in the win column with a player averaging a triple double, then it is objectively not a bad thing for the team. Maybe the other players just don't like someone getting more stats than them? Now if the record is bad / under 0.500 when said player averages triple double that would be a much better correlation to "triple double average = bad for team"

When Kareem was listing players who should be put into the GOAT conversation with Jordan (directly saying that MJ was not the undisputable GOAT pick), the first player he mentioned was Oscar. Then Wilt. Then Larry Bird. But Big O first.

Kareem is delusional. He never mentions Magic amongst the greats while magic always mentions Kareem. Imagine mentioning Bird and not Magic...

I could listen to Sir William Felton Russell all day, every day. And regarding Oscar Robertson, there was an interview with Oscar where he (Oscar) admitted that he ALWAYS feared playing against the great Bill Russell and essentially dared not enter Russell's court territory. Similarly, even Michael Jordan had also stated in some interview that he (Jordan) would absolutely fear going up against Bill Russell. Wish I could find those interviews.

Wilt Chamberlain. Hands Down the GOAT. Only 100 point game(ever). Only 90 point game. Most 80 point games. Most 70 point games. Most 60 point games. Most 50 point games. Averaged 50 points/25 rebounds season. Led league in Points, Assists, Rebounds, Blocked shots, Minutes played. Blocked Kareems sky-hook Multiple times. NEVER fouled out of a game. Held 68 NBA records, 7 still stand today and will never be beaten. And he did it all in 14-year career wearing high-top Converse. No other player, anywhere before or since, even comes close to Wilt Chamberlain

As far as Oscar is concerned, he and Jerry West were the only two guards that could still play in the modern NBA and dominate. Oscar was one of the first big men who could hand the ball and create offense better than anyone else, even one who was more prototypical. West was very similar in outcome, but he was the first to play at the breakneck pace he did. I honestly do not recall Oscar as a defensive player, but I assume his sine and talent enabled him to handle most, if not all, opposing guards. Elgin Baylor, Oscar, and Jerry West were the most prominent stars of the transition to the super-athletic NBA. in the late 1950s and early 1960s (prior to Baylor, Oscar, and West, the game was made up of stars Like Bob Petit (STL Hawks, don’t know if he played long in Atlanta when the Hawks moved), who was around 6 ft. 9 inches and a perpetual all-star. In fact, one of the great symbols of change was that Elgin Baylor’s rookie year he was an All Star, and he and Bob Petit were named co-MVPs of the All Star Game. Young, athletic, powerful, and quick, a specify an of a future NBA star, Elgin Baylor represented the new age; Petit, fundamentally sound, boxing out, getting rebounds, hitting short jumpers…but rather slow by today’s standards, none of the elegance and grace of the flying athletes who lay the game now. Wilt was an incredible athlete, but he never had to develop a shot or drive to the basket; he towered over others, guys like the St. Louis Hawks’ Zelma Beaty or slow White Clyde Lavelleth, who could shoot an old-fashioned et shot and pull Russel or Wilt out away from the rim. Clyde, who would referee high school games I played in the 1960s never made much money, but he was typical of the talent surrounding the few real stars that existed in that era. The game has changed a lot, but I have been most impressed with the speed and athleticism that now prevails. We former players can look and say “Oh, I had that move,” but we never saw the speed and athleticism of the modern athletes. Size? Yes, it is much greater, but speed is off the charts better.

Russell was the GOAT in terms of the ultimate team player….Bird 2nd…Wilt was the GOAT in terms of offensive dominance. Russell and Wilt together were joint GOAT’s for rebounding and block shots. Pete Maravich, Bird and Majic were the ultimate passers…..Walt Frazier, Gary Peyton, MJ, defensive steal GOAT’s, and pure outside shooters you’d look at Curry, Ice Man, Rick Barry and Bird.
