Bill, the "ole reliable" hat problem is REAL! Especially with flat caps. By the time a great hat gets broken-in and you realize it deserves to be in your life long term, it turns into the nearly impossible search to find more to buy. The challenge I have for you as a maker though... Go on a quest to MAKE new versions so you can essentially have an endless source and take us along for the journey!

I also love ivy caps. Looking forward on local summer festival, where there is one seller, with different styles of them. I just remove the plastic brim and replace it with felt, so the hat can be smooshed in pockets and bags, without breaking it. It also makes it easier to fix. No hard plastics or metals, just different types of fabrics to squees

I found a hat in a hedge recently, whilst on a bike ride. Took it home, washed it, repaired and patched a few holes. It is a blue 100% Cashmere beanie hat, made in Scotland. New, they cost £100......!!!! A lucky find, and a fun restoration/repair. It also fits my big silly head. 😀

@@punishedprops This I have learned. As a boring, habitual kind of person, if I ever find a particular piece of clothing that I love, I intentionally go out and buy at least one backup (or more depending on what it is). It's a good exercise for anyone really. Just take a day, go through your home, identify all of the things that you've come to love and would be really disappointed if you couldn't replace. Note them all down, take photos and document brands/labels/sizes, and go searching online to see which (if any) of them you can buy more of right now. Then do it.

I never leave the house without a hat. I don't want to burn my head in the sun, or get wet in the rain! In cool weather I wear a Stetson Black Hawk gambler's hat. In warm weather I prefer a Stetson seagrass hat because it breathes and keeps me cool, yet shaded. I get compliments on my hats quite often; most people don't wear interesting hats where I live. Where I used to live it was more common to see people wearing cowboy hats or other different types of hats, so it feels natural and comfortable to me to just wear the hats I'm used to. But where I live now, ball caps are pretty much all I ever see, so people can't help but notice my hats it seems.

I had a flat cap that perished in a washing machine incident as well - Wore that sucker out to the point that the front edge of the brim started to open up and then the brim itself basically turned into powder when I decided to wash it before wearing it to work! It was a perfect grey - not to dull or bright, with a very fine paisley print as the liner. Its only marking was a small patch that said "Send Your Good Luck", I think it was made in South Korea. Never did find a replacement.

Me and a bunch of friends used to go to a bunch of airshows and Aviation Expos and so on as a group of Hobby pilots, and one day we had some generic hats custom embroidered with a some faux Mission patch on it, and a bright stripe across the cap so we could easily find each outer in large crowds. And we made up a bunch of lore about what faux Organisation we belong to just to mess with these Sales people at Trades shows for a laugh. But the design files where lost over the years, friends moved away and so on, but i still got some of these hats, and i wear them as a reminder of what fun you can have with some dumb ideas.

I was never much of a hat wearer, but then during the pandemic i started buzzing my hair down really short, and since i have pretty fair skin I needed to have something to keep my head from getting burned in the warmer months. I remembered picking up a wool flat cap (similar to yours, just wool) for a costume and being surprised it actually suited me. I daily drive a Brixton's Fiddler cap, which started in a nice olive drab and has faded a bit over the years, brims still holding up great but the leather band along the front is starting to darken up from natural oils, as leather does. I originally purchased the hat for my sister, I have a brown Brixton's Fiddler that I like to wear in the winter time, as its quite a bit warmer than this, but green's her favorite color. When it arrived it was not the size I ordered. Her loss was my gain, some ten years on.

Paused a bit. Started wearing fedoras and trilbies for a couple of years. Currently paused...but feeling a new hat phase coming on. I have a few hats that I use a lot, I've got a more basic ball cap that I tend to use if it's going to rain and I have a coat that has a hood, then I've got a nice wider brim leather hat that I have no idea about the actual design, but I've had it for years and it's held up to a lot without issues...I believe it's an oil tanned leather. The last is a cheap, urban camo boonie that I tend to use when it's to warm for the leather hat to be comfortable. I have a few other hats that I've used such as a rather nice suede bycockett that I tend to use for RenFaire and similar things, and there's a leather fedora that I was given, but I don't wear that often. There's a few really old military hats that I inherited from my grandfather that I used to wear until I outgrew them that I still keep.

Then I started collecting 'local brewery' caps from my hometown and towns I go to, so I have a good collection of those. I also have a very nice Ivy that I cycle through my daily wear, but I've also knitted 3 - one that my father wore until he passed, one that I wear occasionally, and one that I frogged 'cause it ended up slightly too small. I've been wearing a wide brimmed fedora sorta like what Adam has for the last 25+ years. I got another of the same thing recently, and I found that I just can't wear it yet. It looks so different from my worn in one that it just doesn't feel right. I need to make the creases in the crown a bit more sharp, and shape it a little to be closer to my old one.

As a fisherman I like boonie hats but the wind always messes with the brim. Then I found a company called shelta who makes boonie hats with a kydex insert in the brim. They are expensive but worth every penny.

I had a decent ivy cap when I was in college, but these days I personally like a good "dad hat"(floppy topped baseball cap). Ironically they are mainly made by women's clothing companies these days so I have a ton of ladies hats.

I daily wear hats now too. For the longest time I could not find a hat that fit me, my head and hair combined made it way too hard to find one, no standard hat size fit. Until one day, I had enough and posted to a hat subbreddit looking for a company that makes big hats. I got one, and have been wearing it ever since. It is a olive drab and khaki trucker style cap, soon to be embellished with a leather patch of my Ghostbusters franchise logo. Overall I veiw hats like the rest of my clothes and gear: functionality. I dont go so much for looks, but i do have a style i gravitate to, being trucker caps and outback hats. I have a outback hat that i had the same issue of with your hat, i cant find it online anywhere. It was my fathers, and technically still is, but i use it on hot summer days when i am out and about doing whatever outdoors, I like to wander. I have some pretty good memories involving that hat, and could go on and on about things but i will cut it short here. Thanks for letting me talk about hats!

Hats! My favorite topic! I have been wearing boonie style hats for years. I have worn out a large number of them, so many that I had to start making my own because I could not find the style I liked in stores anymore. And I make them on non-traditional colors. My most recent one is purple wool with a cotton lining!

I so miss Byrnie Utz. A part of the Emerald City died when they closed. I too love sporting flat/cabbie hats. I rotate in a pork-pie and a summer fedora now and then (both purchased from Byrnie Utz). Do you have a new favorite haberdashery in the Seattle area?

Hat gang here. I've got several flat caps (or what I call snap-brim) in my collection that I rotate frequently. Also ball caps (what the kids call "dad hats" these days), a trillby, and a proper fedora (beaver felt and everything). A friend just gave me an antique bowler, but it's too small for my noggin. I never leave the house without some kind of hat. Glad you found your white whale!

I wore a similar snap style cap for years until I destroyed it putting out a carburetor fire in a friend’s car. Long story. That was one of the first hats I wore after getting out of the USAF when I swore off hats because they are mandatory in the military. Eventually I changed my mind because I wore glasses and rain makes seeing impossible. I tried cowboy hats and many other styles. Currently I have four fedoras that I trade off depending on weather because they go well with the shape of my head and beard (or so I’m told). I share your “can’t be bothered” hair styling attitude and these days appreciate the shade.
