I hear some people say a slower gear ratio reel has more torque. Is that true. If so can I use a slower gear ratio for flipping or pitching heavy cover. With the torque like some people say I should get the fish out of heavy cover easier than a high speed reel. Can you explain this.

Hey man , let me see if I can shed some light on your Question for you,, typically when flipping and pitching you want to be able to take up line a lot quicker because it’s not a moving bait with treble hooks like a crankbait, so you would need to pick up a lot more line quickly with a higher speed gear ratio then let’s say a 5 speed or a low 6 speed in order to get a good hook set especially when the fish picks up the bait and is coming towards you , you would need to get that slack out of your line a lot quicker , yes theoretically you are correct, but the only draw back you have is that you have less torque to muscle the fish in from heavy cover but having heavy enough line (17-25lb fluro or straight braid etc)and a powerful enough action in your (7’6” Heavy etc ) rod will make up for higher speed reel having less torque , I typically use anywhere between a 6.8:1 all the way up to a 7.5:1, for flipping or pitching a jig or Texas rigged pegged bait in heavy cover 7:1:1 being the best all around for both torque and speed for flipping and pitching but everyone’s has there preference ,, hope that helps ,,
