Billet Tappet Cover Fixed My Cummins Swap Oil Leak

After completing my 6.4 Ford F250 to a 12 valve Cummins swap I noticed the factory Cummins tappet cover was doing a lousy job of keeping oil inside the engine. It was so bad It kept me from making any more progress. Street Sport Industries had just the solution. A billet tappet cover with integrated gasket. Here is how I installed it.

If you made this cover. Then what is your idea for not having a baffle? What’s the plan for keeping oil in with this tappet cover? And having 2holes for a breather, how can you tie them together if you run a catch can?

Friend of mine has a dead 2008 F550 with a dead 6.4 out in Carrollton - He bought one of the Uhaul transporters at auction to use as a service truck. Trying to get him to do the same swap. He was convinced you have to pull the cab off but you obviously don't. I sent him a link to your series trying to convince him. It looks like an excellent solution to the 6.4 problem - and your vids will help in avoiding mistakes. Great looking project. We will have to talk Airsteams sometime - I've got an 86 34' Limited

Please show how you got to the 2 back nuts of the p-pump. Exactly would be ideal. I have my truck apart and my universal with extensions can't get a solid grip on the farthest nut. Afraid it will slip. Every video talks about it or they have the engine out of the truck. Great video but missing the most important part for me.

Not sure if you have a flow adjustment nut on your steering gearbox. The Dodge gearbox does. Just a quarter turn helped my low rev steering a lot

GM, Ford and others don't always use the same pressure on the power steering pumps and gears/racks they use. You may need to change the output pressure of the pump. You can shim the spring on the pressure relief valve on the back of the steering pump to raise the output pressure of the pump. This may help you get the steering response that you want. The pressure relief valve is an assembly that threads into the back of the pump with a large, thin nut right where you install the pressure side line. Pull the assembly out of the back of the pump and unscrew it to get at the spring inside it Then you can stretch the spring (sometimes works) or shim it with washers (better way). This is pretty much all you can do to change the output pressure, since there is no belt turning the pump - and you can't use a smaller pulley to spin it faster. You should be able to find any number of videos on KZbin on modifying the pressure relief valve on a Saginaw style power steering pump. I personally would put a pressure gauge on the output side of the pump to insure that you are getting the right amount of pressure fed to the power steering gear and hydroboost. You would want to look up the stock output pressure for the 6.4 power steering pump at idle, then shim the pump to the correct pressure (or slightly higher). Be careful reinstalling the pressure relief valve. There are a few O-rings that are easy to pinch, causing leaks.

I have a 2008 f250 with a 12 valve and I put a power steering pump off a Ford f650 that had a 12 valve and got the vacuum pump gone and it turns like a charm

You need to get those flared fittings pointing up, then run a 120° or 180° push lok. It'll help stop oil from blowing out.

Do they suggest Medium strength thread lock on mounting bolts, and lubrication on the o-rings?

Nice job on the conversion. I did the same for my 1985 F250 and within a week the tappet cover started to leak. Found your channel after I ordered the same part. I also set the timing at 16.5 degrees BTC. Unfortunately I did not anticipate removing the #$%^ pump again so I did not put the 16.5 degree mark. Any suggestions anyone on how to keep this timing without messing it up. Again nice job. Fummins Rule!

I'm chasing an oil leak. Either last valve cover or tappet cover. On original tappet cover it has a big bump or baffle but not on the new billet one. what's your thoughts on that. How will you mark your engine or harmonic balancer to maintain timing. Or will you start from tdc or original 12 degree ? What's a good way to mark timing ? I'm 18* and it runs good.

Pin time it...pin on pump pin on back of timing cover,that will set it back to factory timeing

How did you end up running your drain lines off the cover?? Into a catch can?

I blocked them off and vented off the front gear cover like the Marine applications.

JYDOG I’ve bought the same tappet cover and I was wondering if I would be able to take one of the fittings off the tappet cover and run it into an inlet side of a catch can and then take the other fitting off the tappet cover and run it to the outlet of the catch can... not sure if it will work but I really want it too. In my head it doesn’t sound like it will just because both of the fittings off the tappet cover are just drain lines/ blow by... Correct? I don’t know at this point I’m so scatter brained at the moment and don’t know what to do... could you show on video how you vented the front?... thanks I appreciate it.

You will find, over time that you are going to have steering box issues with your truck and "bump steer problems the tires you are using along with that wheel off set puts way too much pressure on your steering box. Your bump steer will not happen in the traditional sense, however, it will feel like the Your off set is too far from center and the contact patch of those tire is much larger than the design was meant to take. You will also find much greater and faster wear on your brakes, wheel bearings, sideline U-joints and 4WD system. Just a fore warning. Wouldn't be quite as bad if you were to use it off road continually where the terrain would provide you with some natural slippage thus relieving the binding strain. However, it's too be a true k for that, especially in the Georgia Mountains. So you will proudly run it on the street and rightly so, you've done a beautiful job with it. Just a word of forewarning that's all.

Just my point of view Cummins dropped the ball on the injector pumps.. In the end of the shaft They could have threaded a small hole into the shaft Then when installing or removing the nut and washer There would be no way to drop them into the engine

faceman5050 pully? It’s gear driven off of the vacuum pump. He needs a high flow pump or an entirely different pump that’s more badass. The big issue is that dodges use weak pumps to begin with add in the lift with 37s and it’ll wine and not like turning at slow speeds. Bumping the idle to 850-900rpm in park would help a bit.
