Even Roy Clark, a virtuoso himself on string instruments, held Joe in awe.

I feel ashamed that it's taken me 55 yrs to find this incredible man. Hard to fathom his guitar virtuoso talent.

Thank you for posting this. My uncle, 94-four-years young, played in Joe Maphis's first band: The Maryland Railsplitters in the 1930's.

@@VernaCunningham-sz9uz Joe and Rose spent a lot of time in Oklahoma. The had friends in Muldrow, OK. It was like a second home. So yes. But, Rose was from Clear Spring, Maryland.

Joe is referring to Merle Travis passing away last October, which was in 1983. So this concert was either in late '83 or 1984. Joe himself died two years later, in June 1986, about a month after his 65th birthday.

Now you know where Jr. Brown got his style. And Joe went to California early and helped pioneer the California Bakersfield Country style.

Jimmy Bryant was the same era as Joe. He was just as fast and a bit more technical with some jazz influence in his playing...but NOBODY did it more effortlessly than Joe.
