I love this reaction 😂At the center of the song's construction is the fact that Billie has suffered from sleep paralysis. In an interview, she stated that she found it scary to experience it, as she felt she would die. That same idea is replicated in the song: the monster is what prevents her from moving while she is awake. With a complex story, it reveals too much about itself, and without being too clear, it keeps us in its darkness.

She also directs most of her videos. She has a great love of the off beat an macabre, that bleeds into her videos. She also takes a lot of inspiration from pop culture; "You Should See Me in a Crown" is based on a line from Sherlock she also has songs based off The Office and various Video games. She really is brilliant at linking life and pop culture references. Yes she us open about her struggles with mental and physical issues (she was a serious dancer who had a career ending knee injury as a kid) keep up reactions to her. She has a dark side but in a lot of ways she us a goofy kid too.

Now you need to react to “all the good girls go to hell”. It’s kind of like a continuation of this video. She suffers from sleep paralysis and this is her interpretation of how scary it was/is for her.

She was in a pretty dark place for a couple years, including the year she made this. I’m pretty sure she suffered from depression and was pretty suicidal. She’s been doing way better and been way happier this year :)

Love your reactions! Keep listening to Billie and you'll soon realise she covers a lot of deep and somewhat taboo topics in her songs. This one apparently is an expression of her depression, personal demons, sleep paralysis and love of horror movies. She reminds me of ToP in the way that her songs all sound different yet are so distinctly her at the same time, she does her own thing with her music and doesn't follow trends and also like I mentioned before, she isn't afraid to bring up important topics. Can't wait to see more reactions.

Though Billie generally directs her own videos, this one was directed by the same man who did The Conjuring, which is why the horror aspect is so great XD You were partially right about her demons. In this case she is the monster under her bed and by extension, maybe the monster under her loved ones beds too. It's mostly about her sleep paralysis, but it's also about nightmares and the fear that the music industry will change her for the worse. Interesting little side fact, that high pitched squealing like sound is actually the sound she recorded of the dentist drilling her teeth lol
@b.rexnichols97523 жыл бұрын
Billie has been really honest about her depression and the fact that she finds it difficult to connect with people because of her fame. This song reflects a lot of that. Her questions "What do you want from me, why do you care for me?" reflect that. Also, that artists lives aren't really their own, that they become puppets of the industry, pumped full of drugs so they can continue to perform, etc., are alluded to with the needles, the hands all over her, pulling and pushing her from one place to another, her feet not touching the floor and then she ends up hanging in the hallway, etc. Billie really is a genius at subtle storytelling.

Omg yessss, loved this reaction. Billie is absolutely fantastic and fabulous, I get that you get too caught up in the cinematics because they are BRILL. This one of the songs and videos that made me listen more to her. But what I wanted to say was that you would absolutely get what the meaning of the song and the video is if you just read the lyrics. I know you'd get it all then. Hope you do read them, super hugs from Sweden and yes do more Billie, not all is creepy as you put it, but to me that level just makes it so much better 🤗😈🤪💀🧟♀️💖
@chocoholicallemand90964 жыл бұрын
the song is from the POV of the monster under the bed and addresses sleep paralysis which she suffers from. And yes when she wrote this she was suffering severe depression.
@lillihartman98024 жыл бұрын
The song is mainly about her sleep paralysis and night terrors ps the needles weren't actually in her back because that black stuff can kill you the line "and my limbs all froze and my eyes won't close " is about her sleep paralysis the I wanna end me was directed to her she's always struggled with mental health problems but she's doing better she was clinically depressed for a long time contemplating suicide too
@WyndStryke4 жыл бұрын
Yeah she was not OK when she filmed this. She was actively suicidal IRL, and it shows up in her lyrics and interviews at that time. To me the setting gives the vibe of a psych ward (the medical gown style clothing, orderlies manhandling her, the antipsychotic or sedative injections, ...). The song is very relatable to people who have experienced suicidal ideation, but to most people it will be a bit alien / unrelatable. The following are what I personally think are the key lyrics. "Why don't you run from me? / ... / Why aren't you scared of me?" ... the song is from the perspective of the monster under the bed, which metaphorically I think refers to her self-destructive side. She was literally her own worst enemy, the person who wanted her dead was herself. So to me she is asking why her normal healthy side does not avoid her self-destructive side, but instead embraces it. "I wanna end me" ... this one is obvious lol "Step on the glass, staple your tongue ... , try to wake up / ... / Then my limbs all froze and my eyes won't close" ... Referring to sleep paralysis, and the dark thoughts which accompany it as she tries and fails to wake up out of her nightmare. "Honestly, I thought that I would be dead by now" ... in real life she was genuinely surprised that she had not already killed herself, because the only thing she desired at that time was death (this ties into the song 'Everything I wanted' which also referred to her desire to die). Neither of these are her darkest songs (that's probably "Listen before I go"). Her mental health is far better now than it was (it improved in early 2019 and seems to have stayed good since then).
@averyblock54 жыл бұрын
Her mental health actually improved around August 2019, she was extremely depressed in early 2019.

I know it’s a bit late but she does struggle with depression and has done since a young age. I think she writes songs about it as a way of expressing how she feels instead of talking about it. I think this song is mainly references sleep paralysis/ demons and her WWAFAWDWG, album is about the decline in her mental health. I could be wrong. She has other songs which references suicide such as ‘Listen Before I Go’ and ‘Everything I Wanted’, both of which are beautiful songs 🤍

Billie has said in interviews that she intentionally keeps her lyrics somewhat vague because she wants people to find their own meaning in her art. Have you seen the video for Bad Guy? It definitely has some creepy bits but it's a lot of fun, bright colors. Her latest video Therefore I Am, is also different and a bit cheeky. To hear her singing *beautifully* (this is an old one so she was younger and her voice was a little different), please check out COPYCAT (Acoustic - Mohogany Session): kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaOTp6iset6lqqc

i see it like this: some paintings you see and just love and understand right away, other paintings you need context: who painted it, what year, what context..etc..? in the same way, for me although i love billie a lot instantly, i still often require some background or context to understand better her message. in this case, as many told you, the sleep paralisis issues put it all in context! just my throughts i hope you will react to some of her live acoustic, on top of her classic videos. I'd suggest Copycat (mahogany live), Bad (Michael Jackson cover), All the good girls go to hell (live on howard stern)

I don't blame you for this one because I had no idea what it was about initially, either, but I feel like with some of her songs you get so distracted by the visuals that you forget to listen to the lyrics. You're normally really good at that (especially with TOP), but When the Party's Over was fairly straightforward and I think I remember you were confused by that one as well, probably because you found the visuals somewhat disturbing. Anyhow, her newer stuff (so far) is less dark so you'll probably like it more. And don't listen to the people who keep recommending You Should See Me in a Crown; you will hate that video, lol.
