How To Refill And Purge A Hydraulic Bottle Jack

I will show you how to ad oil to your bottle jack. This will keep it performing properly. When you first buy a jack you will need to bleed the jack of any air. Manufactures may not put enough oil in so a top up of oil is often necessary. Purging a bottle jack of air can help fix a jack that won’t lift or won’t stay lifted

Very clear video which and i therefor expected it to be helpful, but after (twice) this procedure I still feel zero resistance in the jack arm (yes, the plug is back in, the screw is tightened again ;-)). The arm drops back down on its own weight.. I don't feel any air escaping through the plug, there's no oil escaping after putting back the plug, .So the problem must be somewhere else.

Thanks!! I ordered a hydraulic press but the jack didnt work because the oil ran out. (Bad transport) Saw that the rubber plug was damaged and wondered why its not a real screw for the oil fill..Still dont know if topping up with oil is enough,but I'm grateful for your video! There is a drain screw too,don't you recommend draining the old oil first?
@BillOfAllTrades2016
@BillOfAllTrades2016 Жыл бұрын
When I did this video the oil was fairly new. If your oil is old then yes you can drain out first then top up. These bottle jacks don’t have a screw on the fill hole because it would interfere with the piston as it rises. That’s why they use the mushroom cap. Just order new ones online and you won’t have issues.

After attempting this my bottle jack stopped working. I found a ball bearing on the table where I was working. I messed something up big time because my jack worked before it was just low on oil. Now it’s totally inoperable
@BillOfAllTrades2016
@BillOfAllTrades2016 Жыл бұрын
Ok. There is no ball bearing involved in this service. All that was done was pop a rubber cork and fill oil. There is no opportunity for a ball bearing to come out of anything. If you think you made the jack stop working by refilling oil then maybe you used the wrong type of oil. Regardless, with the info in your comment I strongly suggest you throw the jack away. And if your vehicle needs service please take it to a professional.

@@BillOfAllTrades2016 Don’t be so dramatic my friend… Apparently I watched a couple videos. The other video said to open the vent screw to release air that way and the ball bearing must have popped out then, along with a lot of oil. I realized this and just popped her back in there and everything was back to normal. Your video is primo but there are much better methods to bleeding air out of these things, as I just learned 30 minutes ago. It involves pumping up the jack piston up, turning it upside down and pressing down on piston to bleed air. And as a side note: who said I worked on cars? Thinking these bottle jacks are only for mechanics is closed-minded.
@BillOfAllTrades2016

Ok. Well perhaps lead with the fact that you used a method other than what is stated in the video next time. I’m not being dramatic I’m just watching out for your safety. Thanks for watching. Glad you sorted things out. And as a side note: obviously the methods are not better if they lead to a ball bearing falling out of the jack. My method keeps it all sealed and is fool proof

Hi. I have such a jack and it's brand new, but I have the following problem: when I open the valve to lower the jack, the segments are not lowering completely. Even if I push then down with my hand, they go down, but when I move my hand away, they come again up (not completely, just partially, but enough to prevent me tl store the jack in its compartiment). Do you know what is the cause? Thank you
@BillOfAllTrades2016

Did you perform the air bleeding process before using? Sounds like there is air trapped in the cylinder. If the air bleed doesn’t work then raise the jack fully, then drop the jack back down. Remove the oil fill cap, shove the piston back in and at the same time put the oil fill cap back on. If none of this works you should return it as you said it is brand new. Tell the manufacturer it’s faulty and a warranty will cover a new replacement. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe

I was about to buy it but saw a review that it was useless horizontally. I downloaded the manual and it said it's meant for lifting and can only be tipped 3 degrees off vertical. I wrote a review that they are misleading the buyer. Have you used this in any other position since I need to use it sideways. There seems to be info out there about the pump has to be in a certain position. I just saw a brand called Strongarm at Lordco and at least the box says must have valve facing down. But again the manual does not give instructions for sideways use. Thanks

I accidentally unscrewed the release valve completly, i became a shot of fluid on my pants. Do i be aware of something now to not do more damage? Should i check the oil level after that accident? Thanks for helping

There is no worries to have. Just screw the valve back on and refill in the fill hole with jack oil. Then follow the purging steps in this video again before using it. Then you are good to go. Thanks for watching and reaching out with your question. Please like and subscribe
