I was at the Pumpkins' concert in Houston a couple years ago (Summer of 2015). He did play 1979 and he hilariously pointed out the people who were leaving immediately after the song was over. He said, "You can tell who the posers are at every concert. They are the ones who leave after that song is over. Say bye to the posers. Maybe we'll just start playing that song first from now on." It was great.
@jpayne36162 жыл бұрын
Why would anyone leave after 1979? I'd want to hear every song played. Honestly I could care less about that song.
@f3uibeghardt5222 жыл бұрын
Why would people leave specifically after that song? I could understand if the Smashing Pumpkins were a one-hit-wonder, and that was their most popular song, but they have so many other hits it's ridiculous. It's not like "1979" is the definitive song they're known for.

He had a temper tantrum and acted like a child by storming off. Amazing how fame blinds people's critical thinking. He was standing in public, around a bunch of people and someone asked him to play his most famous song.... the absolute horror...what an affront to justice that the people who make it possible for him to play music for a living want to hear his most popular song. At least have a polite response if you don't want to play it, it wasn't some scheduled interview in a TV studio it was outside in public. If he doesn't want people to talk to him he needs a new career. Is he incapable of saying the words "I don't want to"? That's what an adult would've done.
@jaym356611 ай бұрын
@@UnrealTech9403 He was trying to make an intelligent point in a civilized manner and the dude said something that was the equivalent of "dance, monkey" trying to insinuate that his thoughts don't matter and he just needs to shut up and play the same hit song over and over again no matter how tired of it he may be. An artist isn't a dancing money and can't just do the same thing over and over again. What makes them great is their need for spontaneity and transformation, their ever-changing individual perspective and interpretation of the world. People try to pigeonhole them into what they want them to be and don't want them to change and do new things. But what they end up doing is killing them or driving them into the shadows. The guy was being disrespectful and you know it. No artist, no person, has to put up with disrespect. People are lucky to get to experience the beauty that artists create, not the other way around.

I saw them play in 1997. They played for about an hour and Billy got frustrated that the crowd wasn’t more into it and the band left for about 10 minutes. I’d say a quarter or more of the crowd left. Then they came back out and played for about 2 more hours. It was a great show. I was a huge fan at the time and hadn’t been to many concerts. I was surprised at how many people there were not fans. A lot of people just show up for something to do, to say they were there. Similarly, no fan of Billy would ask that question. Not one. This guy is a loudmouth who will yell a generic question at any famous person he sees. The urge to rip on such a guy would be too overwhelming, I don’t blame Billy for being an “asshole”

Bad, rude and entitled question. Billy's reply needs to be seen as a gesture rather than a semantic and literal response. Even if they're somehow obliged to play their older material (they're not), why that specific one? The question has the premise of a demand. And it was derailing from what seemed to be a political rant, so it was also awful timing to do that. So it was a fair response imho.
