Welcome back! This lesson will introduce the Korean alphabet known as Hangul (한글). I’ll also talk about some of the downsides to using Romanization, and stroke order. Then you’ll learn our first few letters, and make your first syllables.

@@jcxkzhgco3050 Well, it's possible, even though I think this was an exaggeration. I'm a native Czech speaker and sometimes I can't pronounce our Ř properly (it's very common). Most non-natives can't either but some speak completely without a foreign accent and you could say that they pronounce it more clearly than I do.

My Korean teacher once told me the difference is the tongue placement as well as "where the sound is originating from" Much like in singing there is a different placement for your tongue. In the west, we use a lot of our throat to speak and not our chest. Try to get out of speaking from the throat or head voice. In the case of (니은, nieun) I believe it is top of the mouth and not behind your teeth at least that's how I remember it. So it sounds like 'na' and not 'nah'.

I have 3 tiny kiddos and only have time to learn after 9 PM when they're asleep, BUT Billy -- I am SO grateful for these high-quality, well-explained lessons. I am an avid note-taker and am following along closely. I am so excited to finally learn how to correctly form the letters and appreciate your warning about romanization. Learning Korean has always been a dream of mine, but unfortunately, my parents are too strict about providing me with a proper Korean language course. However, I'm determined to learn on my own.I've made several attempts to learn Korean in the past, but I often struggled to continue due to various reasons. Now that I've just completed high school and have some free time, I've decided to restart my journey. I've even bought a beautiful diary to take notes and stay organized. I'm starting my Korean learning journey from this channel, hoping to make significant progress. My ultimate goal is to continue my studies in Korea after high school, so knowing the basics is essential for me. To me the "Ta" sounds like a "Pa." Just like you did with "la/ra" aound. It would've been perfect if you could add the tongue positions of these sounds and compare them with the tongue and lip positions of the english sounds. You could make a separate small series and I believe it would only take maybe 2 or 3 at the most to get all the difficult sounds.

By living in Korea, I've learned that the faster you pronounce the word, the less distinguishable it becomes between the 2 sounds. So I've mentally taught my self that the sound is a combination of the 2 letters.

One thing that would be helpful to know is tongue placement when saying the consonants. I am hearing impaired, and my specific hearing loss is related to high frequencies. In the speaking world, that means it is challenging to hear the differences between consonants… words like ate, ache and ape sound the same to me. I read lips, which is very helpful! And with that, some consonants like d and t not only sound similar, but appear similar when reading lips. But when I pay attention to what my tongue actually does when saying those letters, there is a notable difference: t’s depend more on the tip of the tongue on the roof of the mouth; d’s depend more on the end of the tongue being a bit flatter where it touches the roof of the mouth. Adding info about what is happening with your mouth with the sounds that are a tiny bit different (and very important to correct pronunciation) than what one may say in English would be helpful to everyone probably. An idea for future lessons!

The sounds are pretty similar to Hindi sounds, which is my mother tongue and it's easier to make notes using Hindi rather than Roman alphabets. I hope I'll learn faster if my brain allows.

Romanisation for me was like the 'ueue' in 'queue'. It doesn't even matter to me whether it existed or not. I'm enjoying learning korean 🥺❤✌🏻

hangul system is just like hindi alphabets, even the pronounciations..so if u r an indian, you will find it way easier to pronounce if you take notes with hindi alphabets as a reference for pronounciation...it helped me a lottt..

I never get the idea of a syllable being one mouth movement. That sounds suspiciously more like a letter. Great series, though. Thank you Billy

The individual "letters" are ㄱ, ㄷ, ㄴ, etc. They aren't any mouth movements, because they're just letters without any sort of vowel sound. Just like "D" is just a letter. It only becomes a mouth movement when you say "dee" to pronounce it.
