Billy when he was still young, angry, and hungry. When success wasn't guaranteed. When he didn't have to mind his body language for the audience, and it was all about the music. And my how every inflection was both raw and on-key, and how every keystrike the same. This is the Billy Joel I fell in love with years ago. Don't get me wrong - he's aged well, but young Joel is still angry. Older Joel had to slow down before he passed by Vienna.

Billy Joel hates this album. His manager ripped him off and he got paid nothing. He said "Don't buy it or just pirate it". He also said they sped up the recording and he sounds like a chipmunk. They have since remastered it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zn6vqqWGmc-rqtE

Legacy edition of piano man is my choice, it has all the piano man album and a recorded radio concert from the early 70’s with this song on it, which I actually like more than the actual recorded version.

Outstanding. Billy’s worst (imo, there really is not one) is still better than anyone else’s best! True story: in high school, people started asking me if I was from NY! I had grown up in the Midwest, so I was a bit shocked. Entirely without intention, came the realization that I listened to him so, so much, I actually picked up his accent! My best friends, (whom I am proud to say received a powerful introduction to every song on every one of his albums from yours truly) and I had a strict policy when we were together. All Billy, all the time! Whether in the car, or at one of our houses, we were actually quite obsessed!

This was originally filmed with Billy miming to the 1971 mix which was sped up in error. But Billy simply transposed it from the original key to the sped up version in this film so his hands would at least match up with what is being heard. In fact, Billy actually continued to perform the song in this "accidental" new key in his setlists for years (it appears that way on Songs In The Attic, for example). However, this official upload replaced the track with the 80s Artie Ripp remix which featured some re-recorded parts and had the speed corrected to its original pitch. Therefore, what Billy is playing on the piano does not align with what is being heard at all.

Baby all the lights are turned on you Now you're in the center of the stage Everything revolves on what you do Ah, you are in your prime; you've come of age And you can always have your way somehow But everybody loves you now You can walk away from your mistakes You can turn your back on what you do Just a little smile is all it takes Yeah, you can have your cake and eat it too Loneliness will get to you somehow But everybody loves you now Ah, they all want your white body And they await your reply Ah, but between you and me and the Staten Island ferry So do I All the people want to know your name Soon there will be lines outside your door Feelings do not matter in your game Yeah, 'cause nothing's gonna touch you anymore So your life is only living anyhow And everybody loves you now Close your eyes when you don't want to see Stay at home when you don't want to go Only speak to those who will agree Yeah, and close your mind when you don't want to know You have lost you innocence somehow But everybody loves you now Ah, you know that nothing lasts forever And it's all been done before Ah, but you ain't got the time to go to Cold Spring Harbor No more See how all the people gather 'round Hey, isn't it a thrill to see them crawl? Keep your eyes ahead and don't look down Yeah, and lock yourself inside your sacred wall This is what you wanted; ain't you proud? Cause everybody loves you now

Brother just like you wrote about what you were going thru back then, if you wrote about what it is like to get older, your observances, the feelings thoughts motives emotions that we feel as it happens and the reflections backwards much like ancient cultures elders once did when counseling the youth- you would have some serious smash hits!! Probably surpassing your old ones. Do 1 double album starting from the age of 45 or so up until now and the emotions that start creeping in. 😁💕💕💕💕it’s in you and needs to come out- just think of how many people this will help, how many questions it may answer in their lives and give them clarity.
