It definitely looks like 1975, I just don't understand Bob Harris' reference to "the new one" when introducing the songs as Streetlife Serenade had been released in October 1974 and was certainly the newest release at the time. And it''s surprising, of course, that Billy wasn't performing songs from the new album.

Here in Australia, Piano Man didn't chart until 1976. So it could easily have been new in the UK.

In his early touring days he had a different band. In the official biography written about him they talk about how his classic band lineup came together. It was because of Doug! He had the guys shown here for his first two or three tours (this clip must be older than stated), and eventually got Doug Stegmeyer to replace Patrick McDonald on bass for the Streetlife Serenande tour. But one day on tour in 74 he passed by a hotel room where all the members were hanging out except Doug and could clearly hear them badmouthing him and the tour. He was hurt and upset as he felt he was a good bandleader and boss and was still trying to make his way up the success ladder at the time and the guys were being unfairly rude and mean behind his back. So he fired them. "If you don't like this tour and me then go find something better! I don't need you!" He was asked by his label (almost demanded) to try out Elton John's just fired band (Nigel Olsson and Dee Murray) and he did but didn't think they were a good fit. He was moving from L.A. back to New York, so he put his foot down and said he wanted a good New York band he could both record and tour with. He asked Doug (who was from NYC like Billy) about band member suggestions and he famously answered "I'm also in band called Topper.. Those guys would be great for you." The band was Liberty DeVitto on drums (Who actually knew Billy from when their teenage bands had played together), Russell Javors and Howie Emerson on guitars, and Billy then found Richie Cannata on saxaphone, flute and organ. Howie left and David Brown replaced him on lead guitar, Richie left because touring was a grind, and replaced by Mark Riviera on sax and that lineup stayed until the late eighties, when Billy decided to make changes because the guys were burnt out from the road and he wanted to try new people. He kept Liberty DeVitto and Mark for years and years though. Doug, Liberty, Russell, David, Richie, and then later Mark are the "classic" most loved lineup. Russel, Lib, and Richie now play as the Lords of 52nd street with David Clark on piano and vocals in tribute to the classic Billy Joel days.
