The Old Grey Whistle Test was a British television music show that ran over here in the 70s and 80s. According to presenter and DJ Bob Harris, the programme derived its name from a Tin Pan Alley phrase from years before. When they got the first pressing of a record, they would play it to people they referred to as the old greys, such as doormen in grey suits. Any song the doormen could remember and whistle having heard it just once or twice, had passed the old grey whistle test.

Dude says he's emotive and that's a perfect word for Billy Joel. When he did a song it was totally believable in every way. It didn't hurt that he had incredible, nearly flawless, talent at every aspect of what he did. His piano plsying is virtuoso level, he never misses a note with the piano or his voice and he has a great range. On top of all that his songwriting is of amazing quality. He was a hit machine for three decades before receding from the spotlight.

My parents were both full-time professional musicians for over 50 years, going back to the 1930s. Both of them & their peers highly respected Billy Joel, first and foremost, for being his generation's greatest songwriter/composer.

Hello fellow Asian kid who was forced to learn classical piano 🥺👋👋 Thing is, Billy also was trained on classical piano, but he grew up in the era of Elvis and the Beatles, so the inclination to rock out was inevitable. I hope you react to more of his songs and performances, especially from the '70s and '80s. The Live From Long Island version of Scenes from an Italian Restaurant is a particular favorite!

True Billy was trained on piano at a very young age his father was a big piano player that when Billy was very young took off to his original country I believe somewhere close to Russia and his mother kept him in piano

Back then they were real musicians. They all played their own instruments. Today all you hear is digital backing tracks and maybe you'll see someone playing a guitar. You mentioned the emotion he puts into his playing and his personality. Unfortunately that is rarely seen today.
