Absolute favorite filmed rock concert/tribute show. Music direction was unbelievable and the video impeccably filmed and edited, and so much talent, love, soul and appreciation in tribute to George. All star band/orchestra/backing vocals behind Eric, Paul, Jeff, Ringo, Billy, Tom Petty and others. Very emotional, especially with son Dhani front and center. And yes, that was Gary Brooker of Procol Harum on the piano and also singing backing vocals

This is a George Harrison hit. I never heard Billy's version on the radio. If you want to listen to Billy, listen to his hit songs, Nothing from Nothing, Will it Go Around in Circles and Outa-Space. Some pretty cool songs. He co-wrote the great hit You Are So Beautiful that was a hit for Joe Cocker.

The original version is by Billy Preston!! George wrote it in 1969 without the intention of doing a solo album and recorded it with Billy for the album "Encouraging Words"! So that what you are hearing is actually the "original"! Thank me later.... Hare Krishna!

Ray Cooper should be noted too, in the back playing the bongo style drums. He once did a whole concert playing percussion with just him and Elton John. And he's recorded with everyone on stage, as well as Pink Floyd, David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Mick Jagger, Harry Nilsson, Carly Simon, Rod Stewart, Sting....

This song was on George's 1970 album All Things Must Pass. I also really liked the title track from George's Dark Horse album. IMHO, Billy Preston was the real Sgt. Pepper; as he first met and jammed with the Fab Four onstage in Hamburg, 1962 - many say he indeed "...taught the band to play..." (he even had the distinction of playing Sgt. Pepper in the film from 1978). R.I.P. George and Billy.

Ever seen that vid of Billy singing and dancing like a demon with Ray Charles at the Piano? Worth a look. Preston criminally underated in general, but especially for what he added to those Beatles tunes they invited him to play on. Oh! I should also mention Nina Simone's version of this tune, which needs to be heard to be believed. It's long!

A year after the death of George, friends and family came together on stage at the Royal Albert Hall in London to pay tribute. One of the greatest line up of musicians..plus Dahni and Olivia Harrison on stage. Rip Billy Preston and George.

I'm not easily getting over the fact you heard this version before George's lol! Even if it is Billy Preston, I don't think anyone should hear any covers of Beatles' solo or together work by someone else first. And, this one is so iconically George's.

Billy Preston is known as "the Fifth Beatle" by many. But there were other Beatles in the early days. Pete Best on Drums, who was of course replaced by Richard Starkey, aka Ringo Starr. And Stu Sutcliff, a friend of John Lennon's, who was with the band on their stint in Hamburg , Germany in 1961 and '62. To see how vital Billy Preston was for the band at their end, check out the Peter Jackson (LOTR) Directed documentary "Get Back". Preston was important at the rehearsals and during the final, epic rooftop concert the film documents.
@jollyrodgers72729 ай бұрын
Billy first met them in Hamburg '62 and jammed with them onstage w/keyboards. Many say he was the inspiration for Sgt. Pepper, having taught the band to really play like they mean it and without 'thinking' about it. He was given the honor of playing Sgt. Pepper in the 1978 film.

According to the courts, this song was written by Ronnie Mack, who wrote the song "He's So Fine" for the Chiffons. The courts ruled that Harrison plagiarised "He's So Fine" when he wrote "My Sweet Lord" and ordered him to pay about $1.5 million in damages.

Fun fact: In this song, George was not singing about Jesus or Yahweh. George was a member of the Hindu religion (insofar as you can call that enormous conglomeration of beliefs "a" religion). "My Sweet Lord" is, in fact, about _Krishna,_ one of the major incarnations of Vishnu, the heavenly lord. :)
@smitisan49845 ай бұрын
"Enormous conglomeration of beliefs?" You could say that of Christianity (whether Protestant, Catholic, Eastern, Anglican, Baptist, Methodist, etc.etc. and so on along with their various subdivisions, most of which deny that the others are Christian), Buddhism, Judaism, Islam and really any "religion" that's gotten too big for its britches. But hey, Coyote died for your sins too.
@Serai35 ай бұрын
@@smitisan4984 Wow, you really don't know much about other religions, do you? A lot of different _ideas_ about ONE god, is not an enormous conglomeration of beliefs. It's just a lot of quibbling over details. Please educate yourself on things outside of your bubble.
@smitisan49845 ай бұрын
@@Serai3 Judaism, Protestantism, Catholicism, and Islam are all different beliefs about one god, but try telling them they're in the same religion or hold the same beliefs and see where that gets you. Many Hindus will tell you that their "enormous conglomeration" is made up of avatars of one god, kinda like the Trinity, and then argue over whether that one god is Shiva or Vishnu or Brahman or Krishna. But they never got into wars over it, unlike the children of Abraham. Anyway, it's okay. Hathor is looking out for all of us. Oh, and while we're at it, the "Hallelujah" part of the song does refer to the Abrahamic god (or gods). George meant the song to be inclusive, and said that he hoped that people would be joining in the chant before they realized what they were singing.That's not unusual with more open religions. I've known Hindus who included crucifixes in their shrines, and one that had Santa Claus.
