All people need to realize that the factory parts, generally speaking, are at best adequate for the specific application as set from the factory. For the most part any quality aftermarket parts, specifically a premium manufacture like Bilstien always will perform better than stock parts.

My wife bought a 2018 Ram 2500 Crew Cab Tradesman 4wd Cummins diesel pickup, in December 2018. She did not want any lifting or leveling. So she could run the truck through our local no touch car wash and go in parking garages. I installed Eibach shocks on the front. And Bilstein 5100's on the rear. The Eibachs are a little firmer than the Bilsteins. Which is fine in my thoughts, given that the Cummins 6.7 weighs about 1150lbs. The 6mm allen socket on the Bilstein shaft is a definite plus. The Eibachs require the use of vise grips to tighten the top nut. The ride and handling is very civilized. And better than her 2014 Ram 1500 Crew Cab Tradesman 4wd was. The next upgrade is a steering box brace. I want to prevent the death wobble as long as I can. The cost of the Cummins diesel with the exhaust brake is worth every penny. Driving on mountain roads empty or towing, is a simple task now. No touching of the brakes until we want to stop at the stop sign.

My 2017 RAM 3500 4x4 did not come with the off road package. The ride from the factory with 80psi was very rough. I could roll over a dime and tell you what year it is. I replaced the factory Mopar shocks with Bilstein 5100s all around and lowered the air pressure in the tires to 70psi front and 55psi rear. The combined results are great, very smooth ride. I am not looking to do any serious off road driving other than when necessary.

I bought a Bilstein levelling kit that came with the 5100’s on all 4 corners for my 2005 F350 I’ve owned since new. They got rid of the horrendous nose dive/bottoming put. I’ve had them for about 40,000 miles but I am looking at a Carli/Fox and new leaf combo for the back end.

Nice and thorough comparison. I just bought some B8 5100's for my Ram 2500. I haven't installed them yet, but soon. The ride is fine except for the concrete patch work on the interstate & rutty back roads in the fields, but adding comfort is never a bad thing. The outtake on your comparison helps to solidify my purchase. Thanks.

I installed the 5100 series in my truck which is the same model as yours. They were like night and day in ride quality over the factory shocks, however after about 500-600 miles they began to ride like the factory shocks again. I do not tow all that much and I noticed the change in ride comfort prior to snow plowing season.

The truck looks great with the leveling kit...nice job! You left the badges on but I still think it would look better without them...I know mine does. I you have not activated your daytime running lights I would suggest that too. Your LED turn signals will be in the "high" setting when the truck is in anything but P. They look cool with just the fog lights on too.
@PNWreckage7 жыл бұрын
+METALITHrevetments Thanks man. After much thought and consideration I am going to leave the badges. I would feel the complete opposite if I had the chrome badges like my last truck. I borrowed a heat gun but couldn't go through with it. Maybe I have a childlike fascination with flat black. Finally replaced my fogs with LEDs (and other lights, probably featured in the next video) and am conflicted about their appearance with the Amber turn signal color. It is neat to be able to just run DRLs and fogs for the first time in any vehicle I've owned. My reservation with that setting is sometimes I need to be able to keep a low profile.

I rode with stock rear shocks and front aftermarket shocks for nine years and having IFS I figured it wouldn’t be a big deal. All the weight is in the front anyway and it didn’t bother me at all the ride quality had improved however nine years later I decided to lift my truck 4 inches and now I run the same shocks in the front as I do in the rear and I definitely feel a more cohesive better performance ride for sure so I guess you don’t really know what you got till it’s gone so now that I’ve gone this route I won’t go another way again.

Could you do a video or discussion on the Tow Hooks and other offroading accessories (like skid plates) for the diesel Ram 2500/3500? Looking around the web, it seems that skid plate options are limited for the Ram 3/4 ton and up. I couldn't find any aftermarket sets that fit the diesel version, though I had heard of individuals buying the Power Wagon skid plates and modifying them to fit on diesel trucks. I'd also heard differing opinions on the tow hooks. Some have said they work just fine for recovery. Others have complained about their bumper shifting or twisting when tow hooks were used for recovery (supposedly this has something to do with how the tow hooks are mounted to a bracket, rather than being directly connected to the frame). I was interested in hearing your feedback on those topics.

An off-topic question for you: Do you get decent AM reception on your truck's radio? Mine stinks. I spend most of my time on SXM but when I'm on the road, which is frequently I like to check the traffic on local AM news stations when I'm 45 minute or an hour outside of town. Even the super strong Chicago stations like WLS (890) and WBBM (780) which are both 50k watts don't come in well until I'm close to downtown. I've had the dealer check my antenna and wiring when I go in for oil changes and they say that there's nothing wrong.
@PNWreckage7 жыл бұрын
+METALITHrevetments I listen to an AM sports radio station called 1080 The Fan which is based out of Portland. On my drive from Salem to my home I have intermittent reception issues with that station, particularly next to power lines and traveling under overpasses. Many stations in Portland are clearer so I guess it could be a broadcasting issue, but the others are not perfect. I have never had a vehicle near this new so I don't have a great basis for comparison; however, I believe our trucks may have mediocre to poor AM reception.

For instance, the Power Wagon vs the standard 2500. In making the truck more off-road ready, they lost the payload capability of the standard 2500.
@PNWreckage6 жыл бұрын
That has far more to do with springs than shocks. I'd be careful following that advice but what do I know
@007Knightjp6 жыл бұрын
@@PNWreckage I respect your thoughts and opinions. Obviously you're a more experienced truck owner. My 2014 1500 is my first truck.

I need shocks for a 2000 xterra. Are the 4600 worth it. I don't plan on lifting my xterra. But I don't want to waist a lot of money on something not worth it. Or if anyone know of a cheaper shock that well als9 be good.

They’re not even that expensive

I would be in for the giveaway. I would love to switch the fronts out like yours but rear air suspension is lower then coil spring. Also, I have a ‘14 with rear air suspension and it still does not have the upper “anti-hop”shock. I only saw it in pictures of the suspect but not on any actual trucks.
@PNWreckage7 жыл бұрын
+Benito Cid very interesting.. I wonder if that was updated in the last few years

+Benito Cid they make spacers for the air suspension in case you weren't already aware. Kind of neat.
@benc.74467 жыл бұрын
PNWreckage Thanks. Yes, I saw those too. I was never a big fan of spacers but, it is something I was considering for the look. The air suspension has been so great for towing, ( level though I don’t do a lot any more), and for the ride I am afraid of messing with it.

So do you recommend against the off road packages if we intend to upgrade the shocks and other items with aftermarket anyways? like the idea of the give away, used is ok lol
@PNWreckage7 жыл бұрын
+James lol, glad the response has been positive. It really comes down to whether or not you want hill descent control. That was my main motivator for the package. If you want the auto level rear air suspension then you'll have to choose between it and the off road package in case that helps

70 psi is too high a pressure for the rear empty, try 60?
@PNWreckage7 жыл бұрын
+JeepCherokeeful agreed. Currently running ~55psi in the rears when empty.
@JeepCherokeeful7 жыл бұрын
PNWreckage yes! And around 60 in front?
@PNWreckage7 жыл бұрын
+JeepCherokeeful I've been playing with it at 70 right now but have had it as low as 55 in the front. 60 feels like the best compromise between handling, responsiveness and ride quality.

I wish someone would make a video on the install. I just did a 2” super coil lift and bought all new shocks. What a pain in the ass to change the front shocks. The nuts where rusted. It would be nice to see what other people do.

I'd be down for a 4600 giveaway and would also be willing to purchase them from you if decide you just want to sell them. I've got the stock suspension on my 2016 Ram 2500, since they didn't offer the "off road package" in my model year. Feel free to PM me if you decide to sell them, but otherwise, sign me up for the giveaway. Thanks for the generosity.

I used a flat area and marked where the beams hit pre-install. Then post-install I lowered them back to the initial mark. Not perfect but they look great and I do not get brighted
