I put the 5100s all the way around on my 2021 Trail Boss last year and couldn’t be happier. We’ve been offroading, on a 3500 mile trip pulling a 6K camper trailer, hauled cattle, hay etc and worked hard.

Some Tacomas came with a factory OEM Toyota x Bilstein shock that looks similar to a Bilstein n4600 but were not the same.

Good information, thank you. I need to replace the shocks in my 98 Tacoma TRD Limited. I do not take it off-road often and I was thinking about the 5100. After watching this video it appears that I would be overdoing it (?). Should the rear leafs be replaced too? The truck does sag, I would like to correct that. Thank you for your response. Carlos.

I just installed the 5100s on my ‘19 Tacoma front and rear. You can definitely tell the difference. The ride is so much nicer. I’m pretty happy with these.

Perfect explanation on the Bilsteins! Ran the 4600's on the rear of both of my 4Runners with just a 1inch lift and up one tire size and never had any issues.

I have a 23 Tacoma Trail. I'm running Icon 1.5" add a leafs and Bilstein 5100's in the rear, I removed the factory spacer. In the front, I'm running the Trails 1.1" larger factory coils that it comes with and Bilstein 5100's on the 3rd notch. I'm running factory sized duratracs. I also added a sway bar relocate bracket kit. My truck is running armor: steel bumpers, factory steel skids, RAmotorsports aluminum fuel tank skid, aluminum cat security shield, and BA sliders. I've got a 10k warn winch with steel line, RC molle boards in the bed, an RC steel rack on the roof, and a steel rack on the bed rails for my RTT. I've also got Sumo Springs front and rear in place of my factory bump stops. I couldn't be happier with my ride quality after adding the weight to the truck, the factory Hitachi's, and rear leafs weren't cutting it. I've also added two folding bagged awnings, a snorkel, any time camera system, vent visors, a pioneer 10" sub, upgraded AGM NAPA battery, and Redarc trailer brake controller. I added blacked out amber grille lights, amber dual flood and spot Auxbeam Pro Series ditch lights, dual flood amber "zombie" lights that fold out under my front bumper, RC 40" blackout light bar, rear bumper white light pods, and a snorkel. I also have bed stiffners, and probably forgot something..... for perspective, plus my gear when I head out into the mountains. My suspension rides beautifully!

On my '15 4runner with almost 73.000 miles with xreas and front leveling spacers I had two leaking shocks. Changed to 4600 at the front using the upper groove of the two available on the 4600 shock (no need for the spacers anymore, it is leveled with the back) and at the rear original Toyota Tokico shocks. 4600 were cheaper than oem at the front and oem were cheaper than the 4600 at the rear. Very close to the OEM ride. Perhaps just a tiny bit stiffer, barely noticeable. Part number on the 4600 is 24-121750 and at the rear 48530-35082.

I bought my 2016 Tundra CrewMax TRD Limited used with 100k miles. The OEM shocks were pretty spent by then. I opted for the 4600's over the 5100's simply because I had the 5100's on my 2006 SR5 and they were overkill on that truck. The 4600's lasted two years and 25k of driving and towing before the passenger side rear gave up on the 2016. It's always that corner with a Tundra BTW. I always felt they were just marginal for this truck anyway. Today I installed the rear 5100's I just got from Shock Surplus (FAST free shipping, $25 internet coupon!) They suit the 2016Tundra very well. Doing fronts soon.

i have a set of 4600's on my 2005 suburban and they made it handle better( especially body roll) and provide a great ride. On the flip side i installed a set of 4600's on my 2006 2500hd and they are harsh and choppy when not loaded with weight. Im sure the weight of the suburban keeps the stiffness at bay. But on the pickup i would probably go with a shock that is not as stiff as the 4600's. To be fair the 2006 2500hd is just stiff riding truck no matter the shock in the back. My 2020 2500hd Duramax rides so much smoother with the factory Ranchos. The trade off is Porpoising while pulling a trailer over large smooth bumps a highway speeds and minimal body roll on turns. From researching tires can play a huge roll in ride comfort. All my tires are LT load range E i keep them around 50-60 psi (40psi on the 2006 2500hd) I recently bought Goodyear Duratrac RT tires for my 2020 they are Quiet, they dont wonder on bad roads wet, rain, snow traction is great! , So i will be looking into finding a shock that still rides smooth but cuts down on the porposing on my 2020. Any suggestions for that would be greatly appreciated. I hope this sheds some light on shock selection for someone. Your videos are great, real world testing is much more helpful. Keep it up!

I went from just a basic OEM black shock to the 4600, and man it made a big difference I was really impressed. The 4600 do have a little bit more body roll, but for the trade-off of the comfort it has compared to the OEM shocks still Far better.

Definitely looking to replace my the Rancho's that came with my truck with these. The Rancho's are 20 years old, and you can tell they've had better days. I put new tires on yesterday that were the proper OEM size- made a world of difference, but I need to replace the shocks to make sure those tires make it to 65K miles, haha.

@@ShockSurplus As far as Rancho's go, I get a bit confused with what RS5000 to get- my truck is an "off road" FX4 F150 (2003). I can't find anything as to whether or not if it was leveled/lifted at the factory, so I'm not sure if I need the 0-1" or if I need taller shocks? The shocks on there are so rusted that part#'s are pretty much gone. I'm leaning more towards the Bilsteins, but if I can do the rancho's again- I'd definitely do it. I like that you guys bundle them together to kind of take some of the guesswork out. Thanks!

You can measure each shock from mount to mount on a level surface. This gives you roughly 40-50% compression. You can then plug those measurements into the shock information we have. That number should be roughly centered on the fully extended and fully compressed measurements. You're ok to lose some extended and get more compress travel but you want to aim to be close to even as possible.

Update, I went with the Bilstein 4600 thanks to this video and other reviews . I am really impressed with them and after I replace more of my suspension components I should be in a good place with a controlled, safe ride. They are great on gravel, washboard roads just the same as our nasty pothole laden, rough city streets we have here in the midwest. Great for towing as well! Do you guys only sell truck shocks, or do you carry shocks for passenger cars as well? I'd definitely put a set of Bilstein shocks/struts in my Ford Focus....well worth the extra cost!

I’m trying to lift a 2006 Toyota Corolla 2” to clear some slightly larger tires, and gain ground clearance. I live in an area prone to mudslides and got a free beater to smash around some of these obstacles. I’m planning for other mods like a lsd and skid plates / winch / bumper….

I occasionally max out my payload by hauling gravel, bricks, etc. in my stock 2017 TRD sport. It's pretty close to level now but I'd like the bed to be slightly higher than the front so that it rides level when I haul, instead of squatting like it does now. If I add a new leaf pack in the future that raises the bed a bit, will the 4600s allow for that? Or should I install 4600s up front and 5100s in the back?

We would suggest running 5100 all around. That'll overall ride more equal as they're tuned to be in conjunction with that same series. However there is no right or wrong, and it's still ultimately up to you.

Trust me, up here in Canada the zinc plating looks like utter garbage after one winter. I will say however that the 5100’s made my previous JK ride exponentially better than the stock shocks.

thanks alot for this, it's exactly what's been bugging me since i removed the rough countrys the lift shop put on my truck and put 5100s on it and got the same exact ride. Which i blame on the 3 leaf spring pack on the front of my 4x. I was thinking of getting the 4600s but now i wont. (since for one thing, i'm running 35s). I'm going to have the shop remove the spring packs and put on 2 leaf packs. Which will also drop the front a bit. I'm thinking the shocks don't do a hell of a lot with a leaf spring set up. whaa!

My Tundra has the heavier "E" rated tires. So, I mounted the 5100s. It is definitely a jouncier ride versus the stock OEM shocks that had 90,000 miles on them.

@@kcast005 No regrets. - I live in a city with lots of pot holes. With the E rated all terrain tires inflated to 38 to 40 lbs PSI - I definitely feel the bumps more after the Bilstein install.

I have a 99 Jeep Cherokee XJ with a 3” Rough Country lift. The RC shocks that come with the lift kit are to be desired. I ordered the 5100s. I daily my jeep and seldom hit trails. The RC lift is very harsh over bumps in the road and streets. I’m hoping that the 5100s help with the jarring. Any thoughts? Thank you for the video. God bless you and yours In Jesus Name my friend!

The 5100s should be a big help. Usually the RC springs are pretty decent, they just do not do the best job of valving their shocks, so a good upgrade like those 5100s should do wonders for both comfort and control.

My question is, what's the difference between the regular black rubbers and the yellow polyurethane ones?

Question: I bought a set of Fox 2.0 Performance shocks for my '21 Ram Power Wagon from you guys on Black Friday. I have yet to install due to crazy work schedule and home remodel. I found your comments on the 5100 interesting as I upgraded to 35" tires on my truck. I bought the new shocks because of the constant vibrations and jarring feeling while driving on the concrete roads in Houston. Are the Fox 2.0 shocks comparable to the 5100 shocks in regards to controlling the added unsprung weight? Just want to get a bit smoother ride quality. Thanks!

Fox 2.0 provides a softer feeling for daily and firms up when you're off-roading or rather when the suspension is cycling aggressively on the trails. Bilstein is better for towing and is slightly firmer feeling over Fox 2.0

correct. not all vehicles can achieve lift with the 5100 series though, only independent front suspension applications with coilovers in the front

HRG makes good stuff for sure but if you actually want to increase performance so it is actually decent off road rather than just taller to fit some tires I would recommend taking a look at the Flatout Suspension catalog

We run them on our own vehicles but none that have a 4" lift, and they are all driving perfectly fine and honestly better than other parts that were previously on it. It varies on vehicle, the lift, and then personal opinion as firmness and stiffness is subjective.

I like the zinc plated compared to the yellow painted but I dont have any lift on my truck it is just the factory height but I prefer to use the zinc plated,as a matter of fact the colour of the shocks that I have on the truck now is yellow and I don't like it most especially because of the colour,I prefer something like black or something dark.Will it be possible to use the zinc plated and not give me any problem.

Have any idea why new Billsteins 5100 with oe spring at stock height would make ny 2010 nissan xterra bounce all over the road. The OE shocks with 20OK miles rode awesome, I was upgrading to since it was time, but couldnt recommend these to anyone. Help with any recommendations. I have new Baja Boss tires at 35 psi and rode great before the install.

We can you into ARB springs that would work with the Bilstein 5100. ARB 2607 will provide 1.5" and for stock weight load. ARB 2608 will provide you 1.5" and is a Heavy Duty springs for 110+ lbs. of front end constant weight.

If they're extended for a lifted vehicle they won't ride properly on a stock one. My Silverado rode like ass with 2" lift 5100s on it until I cranked up the torsion keys.

Yup any bushed joint should get a final torque pass with the vehicle on the ground. Get it tight, drop it, and hit each point with the torque wrench.

I'm trying to decide between the 4600 and 5100. I drive a 2020 Ram 2500 6.7L Diesel towing a 30' Airstream Classic (GVWR of the trailer is 10K). I'm now at 76K miles. I had been pleased with the towing with the factory shocks, but I think they are worn out. I'm thinking the 4600 may be a big improvement; certainly over the worn out shocks but probably also better than when they were brand new. But I wonder if I will want the extra firmness of the 5100. Can it turned down to match the 4600 when you are not towing?

The 5100 aren't adjustable, if you're at factory height, then roll with 4600 series.

Only other thing I did is went with a 34in tire from a 33. I don’t tow much or anything so would 4600 work for me with a slightly larger tire and stock ride height in rear?

The Bilstein 5100 would be better for your need as they are a towing and hauling shock. Bilstein 4600 are an OE replacement setup. Those would be more towards how the factory shock were on your vehicle.

I have a 2018 F250. 100% stock. I do pull a 28 ft camper in season, but this is also my daily driver. I like the 5100 color better than the 4600 yellow. But in the video it seemed the 5100 is only for lifted trucks, will the 5100 work for my stock height or should I get the 4600? Appreciate the help!

You can run the Bilstein 5100. For the 2018 Ford F250, the 4600 and 5100 are almost the same specs for compressed and extended where the extended is lightly longer by less than 1/2". We would run the Bilstein 5100 in your case.

TL;DR Same valving. 4600 for no lift, 5100 for zero to 2-3 inch lift. Extra weight is only compensated by springs, not shocks or struts.

Hi I have a 2004 Tahoe Z71 with the springs in the rear. No autoride or nivomats. It’s a 4x4. It’s a daily commuter to work and mainly freeway. No towing and no off-roading I ordered the 4600 series but not sure if I made a mistake. Currently it’s at stock height. My question is if I want to level the front only with aftermarket keys would the 4600 work or would I need shock extenders? Did I make the mistake of not getting the 5100 series and having the option to lift or level later? They make the bilstein for my truck with 0-2.5 lift. So I could have got these and had them at stock height and leveled if I wanted to? A quick response would be appreciated as I would still have time to return the 4600 series My current tire size is 275/55r20 but it would be nice to have the option to run the 285/70r17 later as well and I just like the look of the front end leveled Thanks in advance. I’m torn and reading way too much information. Another side of reading says leveled affects ride quality and steering, please help me make up my mind 🤦🏻‍♂️

Bilstein 4600 is an OEM replacement strictly for stock height and using the vehicle mainly as a daily driver. Bilstein 5100 are a towing and hauling shock and better tuned and valved for that.

It has also helped me understand that I am probably headed in the right direction to fix my suspension woes. What I took away from your comments on the 5100 was that lifted vehicles often have modified wheels/tires that add to the unsprung weight of the truck. The different valving and shock damping in the 5100s deals better with this additional unsprung weight. I am also guessing that demands from hauling and towing have the same need for a shock like the 5100s. I remember hearing (from an engineer friend) a while ago that dealing with unsprung weight is often the "Holy Grail"of truck (and car) suspension engineers. Keep up the great videos guys that are well explained !! Also good on you for pronouncing their German name properly !

Bilstein only offers the 4600 for your vehicle for a stock height. If you have a 3-4" lift then you can run the Bilstein 5100.

Will a 3" lift spring fit on a 4600 front strut if so awesome but if not why? I really enjoy the soft mushy feel from a 4600 and some say the 5100 is alot stiffer but is this the route I have to go 5100 for a 3" SOFTER SPRING? Any advice please!

So the 5100s will not fit stock and for lifted only? Did I understand that correctly? My understanding was you could raise a vehicle with the ride height adjustment up to 2". I was hoping to get 5100s on stock suspension and rais 0.5-1" for a larger tire...

It depends on application. If you have coil over strut suspension from the factory like the front of most modern midsize and half ton trucks and SUVs you can use 5100 ride height adjustable struts to lift the vehicle. In most cases on vehicles where the damper is separate of the spring system like a 3/4 and 1 Ton trucks or Jeeps, you generally need to already have a lift with the 5100s as the shock can not lift the vehicle on its own. With that said there are some 5100s for applications like those that will fit at stock height.

That would be our go to but Bilstein only offers a 4" and 6" version in their 5100 iteration. Then they have a stock height with their Bilstein 4600.

I've done 5100s every time on my trucks and they are great, especially if you're going to beat it, however, for one of the stock trucks I have, I may try the 4,600 for a smoother ride

Your last sentence had me scratching my head when you say the 4600 will be as close to factory performance….factory truck shocks unless they are actual performance shocks are pure junk. I’d love to know who the supplier is for the SD trucks for instance

It was more of in comparison to the 5100s which are definitely going to be firmer than the stock suspension. There are lots of trucks that actually use a shock that is similar to the 4600 from the factory, however in most cases the 4600s are a still a notable upgrade for most vehicles

I just put a set of 5100s on my Silverado 1500 at factory height. They make a 5100 that works for 0-1" of lift so these were perfect for me.

4600s unless its lifted, then you need the 5100s. Sometimes the 5100s are too firm, so the Rancho RS7MTs may be better suited, they're softer overall.

I have a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 diesel, 4-wheel drive quad cab. No lift or leveling. I occasionally pull a 27' travel trailer to the mountains. Occasional gravel roads but maybe 5%. I changed from the stock 17" tires and wheels to stock 18" from a newer model. (rims were better looking) Tires are 275/70R18. Load range E. Which shock would you recommend, 4600 or 5100?

I would lean towards the 5100s for that use case. The front struts can be adjusted to stock height and the rear shocks work at stock height as well so if you do not want a lift, they will still work well.

gaining the height from the 5100 shocks in the front will firm up the front handling response with that extra weight. On stock it may be squishy with that extra weight, and with the bilstein it'll tighten up.

Our 1996 2500 Cummins Dodge p/u Auto, 2 wheel drive club cab long box independent front sus. with 150,000 Km. I bought it new with complete factory trailer package. Tr Hitch & HD springs. No raised kits, it’s all stock. Installed double air bags rear since new. I'm having diving/rocking for and aft problems hauling my 8000lb 30ft trailer. Have had Monroes on it but don’t last as long as they should. People are recommending Bilsteins 4600 series 24-184847 ’s for front and 24-184854 for rears. You can run either in the front, the 5100s for the front are for people looking to level the vehicle through the adjustable height spring collar. But if you've already leveled it, you dont need that. Or you can use the 5100 ride height adjustment instead of the 2" spacer you currently have.

Hi so I just seen your video and notice at the end u stated if your looking more for a smoother ride it’s the 4600 shocks. So I have a 2016 gmc Sierra crew cab 2wd. I bought it used and I believe it’s not standard height as far as some type of lift it may have. Does that mean even though I may want a smoother ride…if it does have a lift you would recommend the 5100 shocks? I’ve got a 2017 F350 crew cab long bed with 150k with the stock Rancho shocks that is leveled running stock tires. I don’t do any off roading. I want to replace the shocks but not sure what to replace them with. I do pull a ski boat, any suggestions? I’ve been told put the 4600’s on the front and RS9000XL on the rear. After watching your video I’m wondering if I should do the 5100’s on the front instead?

If you use this truck to tow or haul anything, then run the Bilstein 5100. It is a 2-2.5" front shocks and 0-1" rear shock.

5100s are the way to go. They have lengths available for lifted and leveled applications and they are specifically tuned to better cope with the additional unsprung mass of bigger tires.

There is not 3100 series. There are 4600, 5100, 5160, 6112, 8112 and 8100 for direct vehicle fitment. 4600 - OEM replacements. Bisltein 5100 - Towing and hauling. 5160 - Towing, hauling, and off-roading. 6112 - strut only, jack of all trades. 8112 and 8100 - full off roading

I used Blistein B4 19-299198 with stock springs on my 2019 santaFe 2.4L AWD, but it felt too soft and wobbly. When the vehicle is fully loaded (about 5400lb), the rear of the vehicle will sag. To fix it, can I replace it with 4600 or 5100?

I tried to find a comment mentioning a 2nd gen Tacoma (2005) so my apologies of I’m doubling up. So 4.0 4x4 Off-Road that’s mostly stock. It has the supercharger but I doubt that impacts what shock to use. It has the stock bilsteins on there but I’m looking to upgrade since at 149k miles I think they’re still original. I’m leaning towards 5100 mainly because of the great things I’ve heard. I don’t haul anything, nor do I go off-roading much (but I want to change that!). Which would you recommend? Bilstein 5100 is a good starting point but they are not as capable as other products if you're planning to build this into an off-road focused rig. I just bought a 2006 Chevy Silverado 2500HD, it has 200k miles on it. The shocks have never been replaced, and as you can imagine at 200k they are ready to. Can someone give an opinion I should get when I will not be towing and looking for comfort?

Of the two, if it is stock height you will want the 4600s, however if you are not towing and you want maximum comfort, the Fox 2.0s might be the better call.

Bilstein does not have any 5100s for the 2wd OBS GM trucks but if you wanted something similar You could run Skyjacker M95 part numbers M9506 in the front and M9572 in the rear. They use a 46 mm piston just like a Bilstein and are good from stock height up to 2" of lift all around.

4600/5100 will ride near identical, imperceptible to most drivers. I would look at Eibach pro truck for your F150, a bit smoother than Bilstein in terms of bump compliance (softness), delivers great handling.
