It's not so much the punishments themselves that are the problem; although relatively underwhelming, censures and removals tend to work as a way of sidelining a member of Congress and minimizing their influence. Parliamentary privilege is necessary in order to avoid politicizing the judiciary and overwhelming them with all kinds of frivolous and politically-motivated lawsuits. The problem is that politicians are way too focused on preserving their own power that they tend to side with dominant figures at the expense of their moral values.

McCarthyism isn't gone, we've just democratized it on social media. We've replaced Joseph McCarthy with the like and retweet buttons where anyone can have a hand in "justice". Justice not always based in fact or context but based on _feelings, emotions,_ often uneducated and free from repercussions and without a second thought. And it's not just people who are the targets now. I expect we won't look back kindly on these times either.

We might never see a politician be exposed for going on a demagogic bullying spree so thoroughly as what happened to McCarthy. Its a trip how american discourse had degenerated though. As a French person, McCarthyism is often cited here (as in the US) as a synonym for fearmongering and witch-hunts, while the details of his story aren't well-known (I wasn't sure whether this lasted the whole of the 1950s for example). It just struck me how different postwar America and Europe were and are, even western Europe. In France, the Communist Party was one of the largest parties in Parliament and the biggest one on the left for decades postwar, up until the 1970s. There were communist ministers in government in 1945-47 (which helped create our Social Security system of health and pension insurance). Incriminating people for just being communist sounds weird because millions of people were communist or sympathizers back then.

Also a good friend and house guest of the Kennedy's. I disagree with the ending comment about the Fifties. I think we hear term "McCarthyism" referenced more often these than any reference to Dovetail haircuts or poodle skirts. Furthermore, the term is often misused when people claim they are the victims of a McCarthy Witch Hunt when they are actually guilty. Remember, the problem with the witch hunt was that there were, in fact, no witches. It was a sad chapter in American history and one that I wish we would not repeat in any form.

One of my most memorable history classes in high school was when the topic was first brought and we played a little game with it. All of the students were separated into groups and all students were given cards but at least one student in each group was given a card with a dot on it if we guessed correctly who had the dot and if we had the dot and no one guessed us we would get a piece of candy. We were all suspicious of each other and we all tried to find out what the other was hiding we all guessed that someone was hiding someone because someone else told us that at least one person in this group was hiding something.

*Fun fact:* Joe McCarthy has a considerably bad reputation in the world of comics, as he is usually blamed for causing the creation of the Comics Code Authority and restricting the creative freedom of writers. Thus, he is usually panned everytime he is depicted in a comic book. For example, the members of the Justice Society of America blame said senator for the dissolution of the group after WW2, since McArthy threatened to declare them a threat to America, despite their support against Nazism, if they did not make public their secret identity. Obviously, the group prefered to retire before putting in risk the lives of their beloved ones
