@RuthLovesJesus2 жыл бұрын
@@Sunnyfield323 ROME: The Opposite or Equal is in reference to the pH. For example, in Respiratory alkalosis when the pH is High then the carbon dioxide CO2 is Low and the compensatory effect is Low bicarbonate HCO3- so Opposite from the high pH. However, in metabolic alkalosis when pH is High then HCO3- is High and to compensate CO2 will also be High, so they are all Equally High.

This got me so confused at the beginning because I kept asking myself how is it that we keep producing increased hydrogen when CO2 increases but yet we are going down in Ph. But once I realized that Ph is measured in 1x10^-ph. Now it made sense because naturally when you decrease something raised to a negative power it would increase it. Thank you for this video!

Acidosis = quantity/concentration of H+ ion goes up More carbon dioxide = more acid Respiratory acidosis - carbon dioxide must be increasing because it binds w water, produces carbonic acid, splits apart, and produces hydrogen ions.

Awesome as always. Can I please ask if carbonic anhydrase works both ways in in creating carbonic acid from Co2 and h2o and also dissociating the acid back to co2 and h20?
@rogodanelena27213 жыл бұрын
yes, it can. In the proximal convoluted tubule you have 2 types of carbonic anhydrase: CA IV which is intraluminal that converts h2co3 in co2 and h20 and another carbonic anhydrase intracelular, named CA II which forms h2co3 from co2 and water.

Actually took me a while to get this because I didn’t understand pH was a reverse logarithmic scale. pH of 14 is H+ concentration of 10^-14 so higher pH is lower concentration of H+, I have been out of school for a while and when I saw him say H+ increasing lowers pH I yelled that adding a positive ion should make the solution more positive, dumbly accusing him of something that I should have know had no actual relation. Of course I was convinced that since everything is upside down in Australia, so is blood chemistry :P
@aurorabig11 ай бұрын
If in pH, all we calculate is H ions, and if the concentration of H ions in our blood goes down we can get alkalosis. So why is alkalosis ABOVE 7.45? It sounds like the higher the H ions, the lower the pH? Why is it opposite like that?
