Almost every human follows the same biomechanical pattern of walking -- what we call gait. And since it's so often the cause (or consequence of pain), movement experts spend a lot of time studying the normal gait cycle.

Hi, I’m Patrick. I’m a freelance science writer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training and a master’s in clinical exercise physiology. I used to work in the clinical setting as a certified athletic trainer, physical therapy aide, and a certified strength and conditioning specialist. After working in the clinical setting, I went back to school and became a teacher. The goal of my content is to help normal people, not just pre-med students, learn about the human body. That might mean explaining a topic from an anatomy class or exploring a topic from medical history.

My stroke is 3 years old. I refuse to give up. A shuttle machine corrected it temporarily and Iv made it my mission to walk like pre stroke. I’m 37

i have a lot of skeletal abnormalities, and have an abnormal gait. learning about this is super fascinating, and helps me understand what my physiotherapists are looking for in me! also explains all the testing orthopedists did when i was a kid, heh

This proves to me that the Patterson/Gimlin Bigfoot is real ( I know it might be a little off-topic here ). If you watch the figure in the 1967 Patteronson film, you'll notice that its walking pattern is way way off compared to a human; the shin rises to almost 90 degrees, the front knee doesn't lock, it has a zero gait ( like walking a tightrope ), and the arm swing is way off as well. It's something that critics don't take into consideration.

I’ve been trying to find someone who explains the knees and correct positions/ flexion/ extension when walking and through the different points. My gait is off because I ruptured my ACL 1.5 years ago and I never had surgery or heavy PT (not affordable at all 😢) so I’ve done my best in just body weight exercises and practicing my gait. What I don’t know is if my knee is supposed to be straight and at full extension at any point in my step. Because if I were to allow my right knee to fully extend, I very well could injure my knee and hyper extend it since I have no stability lol

I thought there was confusion about walking steps. Can you please verify. Is it true that you’re supposed to walk heel to toe vs “ front-mid to heel”. Ive seen where its really unhealthy to plant heel first due to the shock put on the heel that radiates up the entire back extremity. Can you tell me why I am conflicted? Im asking bc I keep having so much pain in Buttocks, calves and lateral chin muscles. Please advise my terminology. Neither science or medical here. Im hair stylist/mom.

Do you know anything about Trendelenburg Gait and how to start walking normal ? I have this penguin walk for a while and I have exercise doing all kind of things. My right Hip is weak side , and my left side must drop , it's out of lined. *I scuff my LEFT SHOE ( foot )* . I have noticed that , my right shoe , it's okay . If you can only give me ideas how to change my gait , the help will be much appreciated. Thank you .

Can you make a video on emotional trauma and how it can affect gait? You mentioned neurological causes.. a strong psychic imprint (emotional imprint) from childhood trauma i.e. sexual abuse could affect gait yes? Closed off feet due to the memory of emotional discomfort? A great best selling book is The Body Keeps the Score.

So are toe to heel gaits considered an abnormal gait?

Not abnormal, just different. It’s super common to see toe-heel gaits with barefoot runners!

Not at all... In fact, to truly know how to walk properly, one must often spend a great deal amount of timing walking barefoot... First the front(ish)/mid outside of the foot contacts the ground; mmediately followed by the front inside of the foot. Then finally the heel touches shortly after... Be sure that you "lead with your knees" as you walk. Your legs and feet should not be swinging out like a stiff board.

@@Corporis From my basic understanding of physics and biomechanics, toe-heel walking would be the better way to absorb shock as the entire leg acts like a spring. Although like anything there are extremes like over-stride heel to toe or walking on your tippy toes. My personal anecdote being, i switched from high arch, high cushion shoes to very minimal shoes and after the adjustment period the the arch and ankle pain from standing 8 hours a day and exercising went away for the most part. Although my left ankle still hurts sometimes after i get home and sit down, probably comes down to stretching those tight muscles around the ankle.

I have lost 40 lbs and my Gait is definitely bad somehow now. Is this normal due to my weight loss and who do I go to get exercises or to look at it? I was thinking a chiropractor? I have never been to one before so?
@matthewlagerlow7130

Following videos like this after a bad femur break is what created my bad gait. True mechanical function comes through the foot using it as a lever to push up and pull forward that creates the correct biggest strong muscles to fire and propel you like a motor through the glutes then it’s more of catching yourself at land and keep walking. Watch a baby learning to walk they do this and move forward with momentum not heel to toe walk through legs or even watch videos of aboriginals in remote Australia who have never warn shoes they none forward through feet not heel to toe that’s like a breaking force
