One of my relatives had this vehicle with the Brougham package... Fully loaded with all the goodies! It was a _"ship on wheels,"_ and offered a smooth, quiet, and comfortable ride, even over long distances! They weren't exactly the best looking cars around, but they sure had a superb ride!

My dad leased a new one every year from 1968 to 1974. They were always fully loaded LTD Country Squires with the big Boss 429 for power. They were always gold with wood tone sides and looked pretty cool. I remember hitting the highway and cruising at 85 - 95 MPH. They wouldn't do a 100 MPH unless going down a big hill though. They were really nice cars for family vacations. I drove my high school friends all over the place with them hanging out the windows raising hell many times. I have a lot of fond memories driving these humongous wagons down the road. It's sad to say, a smaller Chevy wagon blew my doors off with a 327 small block one day. Back then gas was 25 cents a gallon, so they were fairly cheap to drive until the oil embargo happened.

My Grandfather had this station wagon. He had it from 1971-1982, and it lasted well for nearly eleven years. In 1980, my family took a trip from Pontiac, Michigan to Big Stone Gap, Virginia (my dad's birthplace) and Grandpa took his 1971 Ford Country Squire Wagon with us. It still ran well for an aging car that went over 600 miles through four states (Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, and Virginia, and even a quick trip to Bristol, Virginia/Tennessee for fun.) Such childhood memories. I was 12 years old at the time.

If I remember right, Dad's 72 Country Squire had the "power locks" which were either pneumatic or hydraulic. When you locked the driver's lock it would actuate the others. But sometimes you'd have to pump it a couple of times before the other locks would lock. As for the folding back seat, Dad always felt it was a pain to have to raise and lower the seat backs, so we'd just sit in the far back on the floor like every other kid of our generation.

I have a '70 Country Squire with 'power locks', and you're correct - they ARE vacuum-operated. After 48 years, they don't exactly work as well as they did back in the day - but they do still work (but only when the engine is running!). I've had my Squire since 1992, and I just finished getting new paint and woodgrain so it finally looks brand new again. These cars were fantastic back when they were new, and mine is still great to drive. Thanks for posting this cool commercial!

The Country Squire was a market leader and important enough to Ford that it had its' own distinct sidemarkers worked into the design of the woodgrain framing and shared with no other Big Fords. The current Ford line for the last 10-15 years has been so heavy with overlapping crossovers because after 40 years of Country Squires and 20 of Explorers, with their minivans having always been also-rans in between, Ford does NOT want to miss the boat for the Next Big Thing in kid haulers!

These were THE cars American families were clambering for in the late 60's and early 70s, very, very popular. My folks ordered a dark green '71 like this. I was 8 and I vividly remember going to pick up our new Country Squire woodie from JL Trotter Ford in Mentor Ohio. Turned out to be the biggest lemon we ever had...by a long shot!. I can recall that two of the five doors were not working among other build flaws like rear window failing to go down and my Dad dressing down the sales guy for presenting such a POS. Also remember when the rear wheel well FELL OUT of the car during a trip out west that summer. Just driving along and 'bang'. Looked like a fender lying on the turnpike. As the youngest of three, I was relegated to sit in the way back. If the fumes didn't kill you the bolts that held the seat belts to the hump would easily 'brand' any exposed skin. Still have the leg scars. Mercifully it was totaled by a drunk in 1974 (while parked, nobody hurt) and died an early death as was meant to be. It's rare to see any 71 LTDs much less a wagon.

These cars were in the show room by the time I was born (fall of 1970).. I remember them by the late 70's early 80s, and during that time when these cars were 10 years old in the New York tri-state area (NY NJ CT) I remember seeing a lot of them that were fairly beaten up. They had rust, faded wood grain, and probably some dents... At the time I thought these were ugly cars I always seemed to like the Mercury Colony Park wagons much better.... Nowadays when I look at the style of this car I tend to think that it really wasn't a bad looking car at all.

Idk why it has a vertical grill and people didn't complain and yet in the 50s when edsel came out it had a vertical grill and people were complaint about it. It even had a 400 cubic inch motor with a 345 horse power with a latest transmission that you can change the gear with just a push of a button not to mention when the gears shift it was electronic so it is innovative and also at a nearly top speed of 120 mph
@MeDicen_Rocha
@MeDicen_Rocha 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you could argue that on paper the Edsel was objectively an excellent car, packed with futuristic features and tons of performance, but in reality the way it was packaged and assembled made it so all those features didnt matter at all. Combine that with a rather steep price tag just at the time time the economy is heading into the late 50s recession and you got a recipe for disaster.

What I like 👍 about the 69 & 70 Country Squire over the 71& 72 is front end treatment grille with the concealed lights the front door vent wing windows the traditional door handles the personal wrap around style cockpit for the driver the location of the radio only the driver can control the radio and the rear tail lights are nicer and the Country Squire script badges on the rear Quarters are more distinctive then the 71&72 I also think the simulated vinyl applique’ woodgrain siding is prettier when compared to the 71&72s it’s personal taste then you also have the 68s which was truly a stand alone year when compared to the 66s& 67s check it out 🥸

I wonder - why aren't hidden windshield wipers a thing anymore? Even my 1980 Cordoba had them.

Some cars are coming back with them but they have been few and far between since the early 90's. I suppose because cars are narrower and taller it makes it almost impossible to hide the wipers fully under the hood, plus they tend to get packed with leaves and don't thaw out as quickly in the winter. Still I think they make cars look a lot cleaner.

The rubber wipers would last longer too because they weren’t exposed to the elements.

Let`s asume this car (wagon) was a nice piece of engineering . Weirdly, what a pity the rest of the world never traced the streets in a reasonable size and width in order to let these automobiles being driven comfortably without disturbing to the others (European/Japanese)driver`s public space

This was a time when all of these were real cars, they had style and so many new ideas that had never been before in any automobile. This also was a time when their was thought in design, that is all gone today, nothing but plastic and look a likes. Remember this was a time when "Ford Motor Company Had a Better Idea" or remember the song standing on the corner watch all the "Fords go By".
