Fun fact: The movie is directed by Dave McKean, an illustrator for Coraline, Yawjak Paw, The Sandman and Arkham Asylum: Serious House on Serious Earth. So the unsettling surrealistic designs and color palettes makes a whole lot of sense if you know who was behind it.

I thought this movie didn't exist. I only remembered one thing about a movie, it being 'a giant being that talks slowly and gets taken over by darkness', and no matter where I looked, I couldn't find anything regarding it. As I watched this video, and it got to the scene with the giant beings, a switch clicked in my brain and I was like 'no fucking way'. This solved a massive question that had been in my head for countless years

I love when that happens. I had a similar experience with an old video game based on Clue but it was more of a point and click puzzle solving adventure game. I searched for it for years and years with no clue what it was only for Brutalmoose to come out with a recent livestream on his second channel where he played the very game I was starting to think had only been a fever dream from my point and click adventure days as a child.

I actually love Mirrormask. I first discovered it within a DVD box set accompanying The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth at Best Buy, several years back, and even though I watchex the two better known films many time as a kid, I have definitely watched Mirrormask more times than the other 2 put together as an adult. It just speaks to me.

The song is actually a real song from 1970 by the Carpenters. The title is (Long to Be) Close to You. The Carpenters are one of my mom’s favorite groups. I grew up hearing their music. A highlight is actually their Christmas album which was recorded and completed after Carol Carpenter died… the album has many instrumental tracks which are all really good… but hearing Carol sing is truly the highlight. “Merry Christmas, Darling” is an original song and is absolutely beautiful. It’s a favorite of mine I love to listen to every year. She had a beautiful voice and I recommend going to listen to their songs. She unfortunately died from bulimia… which hasn’t been in the spotlight in a while but truly can be a killer. If you feel like you need to purge, please get help. It can and will kill you. And that’s no joke. Looking out for you all. You’re perfect and exactly as you were meant to be. Live your best life ❤

The song during the mind control scene is “Close to You”, originally performed by the Carpenters. A lot of the Carpenters’ music tow the line between soft and pretty, and being almost creepy, making them a great choice to tweak slightly and make them so unsettling (like Sonic Youth’s cover of “Superstar”).

im just losing my mind someone is talking about mirrormask. i have forced so many people to watch this movie, and honestly thought it was becoming lost media. thank you for talking about it ;___; i actually have the orbiting giants tattooed on my left arm i always thought the orbiting giants were symbols of helena's parents; they ran a circus together, were shown as sort of soulmates in helena's eyes, so through this the two stone giants are always linked, always together, their worlds orbiting around the other. when one giant is lost, the other giant holds on until the bitter end, until the first giant is forced to let go and is swallowed by darkness. i always thought this scene showed helena's mental state, knowing she might not just lose her mother, but her father might also lose the love of his life. i always thought it was sweet her mirror father had a longer speaking role, showing his soft timid side and devotion to the queen, again showing how her mother is her father's entire world and she is keenly aware of it

The giant scene is one of my favorites. I love how one giant is perpetually falling and the other one is anti gravity , so they both need each other so they can stay in place. One without the other cannot exist. I was heartbroken seeing them get separated. IT'S A LOVE STORY OKAY 😂

My local library has the novelization of the movie. Basically, someone asked Neil Gaiman to write "something like Labyrinth" so he did.

This movie I found in my old local video store when I was a kid. So nostalgic man!

Saw this thanks to my high school art teacher putting it on for us twice, once for the first half and then for the second half another day. Loved it so much I immediately went out and bought it. Never known anyone who has seen it before. I always show it to friends, who are so weirded out and not into it for the first 15 minutes, but fall in love with it by the ending ^_^
