Fun fact: the little witch's last name is Prendergast, which is Norman's uncle's last name. This indicates that Agatha is probably Norman's great great grand aunt, and that his powers are hereditary. Pretty wild, huh?

I personally love the reveal of Mitch being gay. Even though it’s set as a joke, he’s not the butt of the joke, Norman’s sister is, and it’s actually funny. Plus it actually goes with the whole theme of the movie of making assumptions about people so it fits very well. It couldn’t be more perfect Also appreciate that he directly states that he has a bf. No subtle implied bs so you can get representation points without upsetting conservative parents (I’m looking at you Disney and your 1000 first gay characters)

I think Coraline maybe had better animation, but Norman also had great animation, just maybe not as fantastical as Coraline. Coraline's story was kinda cliche and dull though. Kid dont like parents, kid find new people, realize new people = evil, defeat evil, go home and appreciate that parents are not literally trying to kill her anymore. I love that Norman is kinda based on witch trials, and it was mostly accurate to what happened in them. I love that they made it clear that although there are most likely powers out there we don't understand, that doesn't mean we need to fall into fear and superstition. I love love love the writing and storytelling, and I LOVE the characters. Only thing Coraline had going for me was, like I said, the animation. But the characters were not developed well and I didnt really care what happened to anyone, not even really Coraline. But every time someone in Norman got into a dangerous spot I'd be nervous. I also love how they made the big brother be very casually gay at the very end, AND HE WASN'T BURIED! He was a bit of a himbo but they gave him a real heart of gold. Everyone has an arc even if its small...I love it if you can't tell 😂

I love how much of an acceptance film this is. Like, a lot of the times, they'd use the token race, ethnicity or LGBTQ+ character as what the plot characters need to learn to accept, but they made the stereotypical characters just normal people LIKE THEY ARE, and the acceptance message works better from the perspective of a usually horrifying notion of zombies and ghosts, still being normal people in the end, with good and bad aspects. I love how well they worked that angle, and it's become a staple film for me every Halloween.

@Lokear
@Lokear Жыл бұрын
Agreed, and as a neurodivergent kid, it hit me even harder - she was just a little different, and she got punished for it... but then she lashed out against them, and that *also* was a mistake that wouldn't be rectified for centuries. There are so many stories that would have the blame solely rest on the judges, but I really love how Aggie did have blame too, it felt a lot more real. Still, she didn't deserve to be pulled from her family like that; as you said, she was just a little girl. Also, yeah, yikes, those real women who literally weren't witches and were just killed for nothing. I love me some Hocus Pocus, but the way they're portrayed just doesn't reflect the actual witch trials as much as I'd like. ParaNorman is a step up on that front for me.

Honestly, I have a pretty big gripe with this movie. I really don’t like how no one, save his sister, apologies to him. Especially his father, he was just mean spirited. And asking if the grandma was sitting in the chair in the end wasn’t enough for me, it was not an “I’m sorry for the things I said and how I treated you.” That said, I think it did have a good premise, and I really do love the animation style. I like listening to other people’s takes to get different perspectives. :)

@@laurenfrey873 of course it's not okay. the movie doesn't say it's okay, but it is a reality for many families. This was the first Laika movie I watched and I remember immediately falling in love with it. The story is outstanding and all the characters are so great. Paranorman is honestly my favorite of the Laika movies, especially after I got the chance to talk to some of the crew and learned more about it. I do also love the others, this movie though just has a special place in my heart.

This is one of my all time favorites movies. So many good jokes! When the parents are going on their date night "You promised me a dinner someone else microwaved"

Also the trailer song ("Season of the Witch" by Donovan) and the trailer it's self is one of the best I've seen! (imo)

Funny thing is, this isn't even Laika's best movie. That honour goes to Kubo and the Two Strings, which is genuinely the best animated movie ever made.

A few years back my now 7 year old daughter made me watch Kubo, she was OBSESSED and I totally understand why. Kubo is such an amazing movie that is totally underrated, it not only has amazing artwork but the storyline is killer. My man Kubo gets a solid 10/10 from me.

I remember watching this movie with my old brother years ago. I was so impressed and amazed by it, but also so scared. So happy that many people still appreciate it nowadays

3:33 anyone else noticed how grandma (in the movie) said her feet are cold which is in my opinion is trying to indicate/foreshadow that she’s dead that whole time? idk if that makes sense but yeah i’ve been thinking about this one

This movie got the feeling of being isolated down to a point. It's like the one movie that gets how it feels, in both the character of Norman and the music that plays around him. One of my favourite movies, 100%.

Fun fact about me; Norman's Uncle's reaction to death was the same as mine. It was just the first time I got sleep paralysis, but I was in that moment convinced I had died. And all I thought was "Aw nuts, that sucks." Shortly after followed by "Wait; are we just stuck in our body when we die? That sucks even more!"
