The “Would You Kindly” twist is the sole reason I believe that a BioShock movie wouldn’t work The point of the twist (to me anyway) is that you never had a choice and never thought about it. You, like Jack, followed Atlas to the letter and never truly did anything of your own free will. A non interactive medium would ruin the message of the twist for me

Even though I really enjoy the final game, looking in to what Bioshock Infinite was originally supposed to be is always kind of depressing. Pretty much all the criticisms people had about the game (from a design perspective at least) were not an issue in earlier versions. It sounded like it started off being more or less what everyone would have wanted from a Bioshock sequel, before them having to repeatedly cut back everything until it ended up like it was in the final version. That's the biggest reason why it took so long to come out. They had to keep rebuilding the game over and over, narrowing the scope each time.

As someone who followed every news article during the game's development, my theory is the game was ruined by concerns of financial loss. I recall an interview with Ken Levine discussing focus group testing, where they asked college "frat" students if they knew BioShock. When they said they didn't, he wanted to gear the game toward games they did play "like Call of Duty" - naming the game directly. That's a major red flag, although 2012-2013 people didn't think much of it. I believe 2K Games, the parent company holding Irrational Games, was afraid the game wouldn't make back production costs in sales. As such they forced Irrational Games to constantly rework their game to fit popular gaming trends of the time. Of course this was a terrible idea. They were chasing the trend of MULTIPLAYER FPS in a SINGLEPLAYER GAME. This resulted in an overabundance of obligatory gunfights and a massive reduction in story, and the overall result was memorable in the moment and absolutely forgettable in the long term. In their attempts to "play it safe" by reducing the racist tones to very specific scenes, turn it from USA to Religon, make the gameplay fit trends, they produced an inferior product. Had the game been allowed to stay its proper course, it would have been a far more impressive (literal form) game. Something to remember, something to go "That was a major point in gaming." Instead, it is a footnote.

+MegaScience that makes a lot of sense. There's a large gap between when they first showed the demo and the release so when I first saw it I thought it was the most impressive graphics I've ever seen and years later it's been quickly left to the dust and was even downgraded in some areas.

Advent Cirno Watching this video probably also spoiled a lot of it for you. If you're interested, the gameplay still holds up in all 3 games. Bioshock 1 is a lot more atmospheric & narrative driven, but the combat is still fun, while remaining challenging where it should be. Bioshock 2 is much more focused on the action. It is admittedly the weakest game but it is by no means bad. The improved pace of combat winds up actually making it more fun to play if you ignore the flaws. Infinite was hugely disappointing to me, and in my opinion, tries to hard to mimic the success of the 1st Bioshock. Still fun and every bit as unique, but oddly enough, can be extremely frustrating. Especially on higher difficulties, as the combat feels the least balanced. TL;DR: each of the 3 games is still worth your time.

I didn't play Colonial Marines so I don't know anything about that, but despite everything Infinite wasn't a bad game. So on that note it deserves at least a little praise. But I won't disagree that it's basically a lie. Like, the marketing straight up lied to us. I know games change during development, but this was too much

Bad phrasing on my part, sorry for that. I didn't miss that controversy. I know the gist of it, because it was a pretty big topic. But at the time (and before it) I wasn't really following the gaming industry, so it just kinda went by. I also never played the game and never intend to, simply because I have zero interest in the franchise. All I know is that the game was massively downgraded, but I'm sure there was more to it. Either way - it's surely the first and definitely not the last time something like this happens. It's always disappointing, but what can you do. Hopefully it teaches the companies a lesson, if nothing else

Yes, no cutscenes at all in Bioshock. Just several long moments where you're unable to progress and/or have control taken away from you while a pre-scipted series of lines and actions unfolds in front of you. But you can like walk around during them so it's totally not a cutscene and is much better storytelling :)

Oddly I am playing through all three of them again now (including, of course, the excellent Minerva's Den for Bioshock 2), and am on Infinite now for the Bioshock Collection that I got the day it came out but never got to. I played through the original Bioshock about five times now from PC to PS3 to now PS4, played part two twice, and now Infinite for the third time. I want to thank you for one BIG thing in your video: I had NO IDEA the cover for Infinite on the PS3 was reversible until now, and it is superior. I will most likely never play it on the PS3 again, but I immediately got up and switched the sleeve, and it's now my second favorite reversible cover next to Doom on the PS4. Excellent video and thank you for one thing I never knew!

All three games are masterpieces together and on their own. Ken Levine and the rest of the teams that made the games truly did a great job. They helped propel the idea that games can be art too into the mainstream. They helped build a base of video game storytelling that many game developers would be inspired by for years to come. For me, at least, they will always be fondly remembered as strong experiences rather than just mindless entertainment.

Bioshock was the game that brought me back into gaming, the idea of rapture is excellent and the way they presented it was fantastic in every possible way (except it wasn't realistic, but it's a game so we give them a break) Still feel like we can go much deeper into the series, much much deeper. If anyone is reading this, if you did like Bioshock I 100% advice you to read the book called rapture, it works as a prequel and it's a great and interesting if you feel like you want to know more.

It certainly didn't help that Infinite tried far too hard to twist its audience harder than Shyamalan would ever dare to try. The story was changed too much, and Ken Levine was the wrong kind of perfectionist, deleting entire tracts of content if he didn't like it. The game was overly ambitious and underwhelming.
@liateRdnalkcoB

For the record, BioShock Infinite specifically used Call of Duty as inspiration. I'm not exaggerating. In an interview before Infinite released, Ken Levine mentioned asking college frat students if they knew BioShock, and when they said they didn't, they decided to gear the game toward games they played "such as Call of Duty." I'm having trouble finding the article where Ken Levine is quoted on this, but I did find this article: www.polygon.com/features/2013/1/10/3853198/ken-levine-bioshock-infinite-vgas BioShock Infinite was ruined by greed. Maybe it was Ken Levine, but I feel it was more likely 2K Games telling Ken the game had to be a financial success. For some reason they thought washing the story out with an overabundance of FPS sequences would make it appeal to Call of Duty players, forgetting that the entire reason for Call of Duty's success revolved around multiplayer gunplay. It's all lost on AI singleplayer gameplay, so they only served to dilute their product and create an inferior game. Don't get me wrong: I'm an avid BioShock fan. I tracked everything I could of the game for years. But I see the mistakes here and god damn do they piss me off.

While watching this, an AD popped up for league, with the music playing being the iconic 'turning moment'-style song from "No Game No Life." Hearing this, my brain instantly SCREAMED "How dare you stand where he stood" without missing a beat, and I just started to laugh. Back on topic though, bioshock was great, I really had fun with it

the first bioshock was definitely the best game overall, it had great difficulty and the story was insane. number 2 was watered down with the focus on just gameplay though it was fun, i found it too easy with a story that wasnt so good. infinite was awesome the first time i played it, but not as fun the second time. i can always go back and play the first game.

Wouldn't be surprised people looking back at it now that the deconstruction amongst a sea of deconstructions sank once the deconstructions stopped pouring in entirely.

Bioshock is one of my favorite game franchises I’ve played. Rapture specifically is the best character. Which is why a movie could work really well.

The more I learn about bioshock, the more it reminds me of a toned down silent hill; right down to the enemies representing extreme's of parts or mindset's of the main character. I wonder, in today's age, is it possible for bioshock to push itself to the limits such like silent hill did? In terms of graphics, mechanics, risky choices in terms of how much you can get away with; yet still make it avaliable to most audiences (ofc not child-friendly) as well? It makes you wonder, it makes you think. Just how far can we go with bioshock to shock, think and grow; but also be acceptable today?

James Plack probably because of better game play mechanics such as being able to use plasmids and weapons at the same time having a better hacking system for hacking the circus of values and getting to feel like an actual big daddy by escorting the little sisters all throughout the dangerous world of rapture

Still one of my favorite games of all time. Played it on PS3 (remake) originally, then Xbox 1, then on a real gamer system, PC sporting a GTX 1070. Can't wait to see the game again when the next line of Nvidia cards drop. 1440p with over 100 FPS...can't freaking wait

I felt like Infinite's gameplay was perhaps the weakest in the series. Just way too many exploitable, repetitive features that by the end, I felt like I was really just trudging along waves of enemies just to get to the next story sequence. But I really loved Infinite's story, including the dlc. The way the game tied in the first bioshock was just amazing for me.

sofia lamb might just be my favourite villain/female gaming character of all time. the way they wrote her in bioshock 2 was amazing. much better than andrew ryan, i'd even argue that "all i've done was an act of love" is way more impactful than "a man chooses, a slave obeys". even though the most iconic line from the games is "no gods or kings, only men". i love bioshock so much. still salty sofia wasn't on burial at sea.
