In this mini documentary we take a look at some Easter eggs, secrets, and history of the Nintendo 3DS. The Nintendo 3DS is a handheld game console by Nintendo, and is the successor to the Nintendo DS (NDS). The system is capable of displaying stereoscopic 3D and has received several revisions such as the Nintendo 3DS XL, the Nintendo 2DS and the New Nintendo 3DS. The console's price was reduced from $249 to $169 amid disappointing launch sales. Nintendo offered free Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Game Boy Advance (GBA) games from the eShop through emulated gameplay to consumers who bought the system at the original launch price. This move paid off, as the Nintendo 3DS systems combined have sold over 60 million units. We hope our analysis of the 3DS explained the inner workings of device and its games. Whenever someone says "Nintendo is dying" I just have to point out the 3DS. Despite its rough start and having to compete with the smartphones, the 3DS still remains a colossal bestseller with a immensely impressive library. They utilized the 3D capabilities well but did not force it down our throats. The 3DS is a profitable and well-designer survivor that beat the competition, the PS Vita is on life support and the smartphone game fad has nearly died out. Thanks to the 3DS Nintendo is alive and well.. ... Well that and Nintendo also has a huge amount of saved money and the Wii U did very well too, but still the 3DS was a money printer just like the DS. Update: please note I do not take sales into account of a console "doing well", history has proven time and time again sales do not equal quality.

I love Nintendo, but saying the Wii U has been doing extremely well is news to me. It's so far the only (unique and main) Nintendo console I haven't had in my possession, probably due to its lack of original Zelda. But my friend has it and it definitely is a solid system however.

Not sure how I'd feel about it. Guitar Hero did that with their controllers, allowing them to be dismantleable for easy travel, but that made them way more unreliable than older models since the contacts became scuffed and worn due to exposure to the air and it meant that most of those controllers ended up having shitty button response as a result.

It has been announced actually, just not formally revealed. Several high level Nintendo empoyees have spoken about it, they just haven't shown any pictures of it yet. That said, the patant filing for the NX is pretty detailed, and from that alone, you can still get a pretty good idea of what it looks like.

Nintendo, unlike it's competitors, puts fun and innovation first, and that's exactly why I like it. I don't care about graphics, I care about the quality of the game. Nintendo has also created great innovation in gaming, from integrating motion control(wii) to putting a screen on the controller(wii u), and even combining home consoles with handhelds, Nintendo will always prevail. 1v1 me Nintendo haters

Same here. As long as it's not visually cluttered or hard to view, I'll play a Nintendo system over anything else. The experience is so magical with an appeal to younger audiences while bringing something to the original players.

I think it's why they made the Switch. Systems today are so powerful that a separate handheld and home console is somewhat redundant. The 3ds could render about everything a game designer could come up with and could effectively use models with such a high polygon count that they are invisible. It is actually part of why the Wii U failed as the 3DS could do most of the same things and was much cheaper.

RJTheHero actually, since the systems use entirely different types of processors, it has been reported that the games run horribly on the 3DS, whereas they run fine on original hardware.

From what i've heard from nosing around the 3DS hacking community is that these games don't function like normal games. They are GBA games with some higher level 3DS functionality hacked in and then packed into a 3DS executable. The result is that from a software standpoint the 3DS becomes a GBA while one is running and none of the other higher function processes can run in the background. Which is why the system also can't sleep, access wifi, or exchange street passes while running a GBA game and does not support save states.

Nintendo stated back in the day that the GBA releases would be EXCLUSIVE to Ambassador program owners. Also there are some emulation issues but nothing that's bad.

To add on to that, because it can't do any of those processes while a GBA game is running, Nintendo them until they can flawlessly pull off said processes. They hold their virtual console game quality to a pretty high standard.

Nintendo- The 3D function should only be used by kids seven and older. Others- OMG kids shouldn't be using the 3D function because it's bad for their eyes! Nintendo- ...Um, okay then. So here's a 2DS that doesn't have the 3D function. Like really, it's sad when a company covers their bases in terms of warning their audiences of potential risks, and STILL get complaints when those risks take effect. Also why would you tilt the system for no reason and you can turn 3D off if the game uses gyro sensors. I'm saying these but actually it doesn't hurt my eyes if I tilt the system with 3D on and it becomes blurry.

3DS XL is such a nice piece of hardware with a perfect GUI. Been getting every Nintendo handheld since GBC for Pokemon and they've always had issues until now. Color and GBA had no backlight, SP was a very uncomfortable design, DS fat was bulky with a poor display and GUI, missed the slim DS but it looked good, and the normal 3DS was uncomfortably square with small displays. 3DS XL is the best! I hope to see more really great games for the thing.. Mario Maker on 3DS will be perfect! Nintendo should allow their Virtual Console games to be stretched to fit the display though. They look better stretched to fit the screen than as a tiny little square in the middle.

Honestly i don't think the 3DS sold well because of the 3D feature. Maybe it helped, but what made a difference was the fantastic library of games. I barely, if ever, played with 3D on at all. I think they should've just focused on making it stronger.

Actually it had trouble selling early on because a good portion of their launch titles got delayed. A lot of people forget that. The 3D feature was NOT a hinderance even Mario 3D Land was supposed to be a launch title and was delayed and later became one of the best selling Mario games.

*the ambassador _program_ To answer the question; The 3DS can't perfectly emulate GBA games, which is why there haven't been any Virtual Console releases for that system on 3DS. The ones obtained through the ambassador program run natively, presumably through some sort of hackneyed method, which makes them run alright at best and downright awful at worst. And before anyone asks; the 3DS can't emulate GBA perfectly because 1) It has a different architecture and 2) It's not powerful enough to simulate the architecture of a GBA at the level of quality Nintendo deems fit for publishing. It's the same reason SNES games can run on N3DS and not regular 3DS. (N3DS is slightly more powerful.)

I think, that the new 3DS is the best handeheld you can get atm. The streetpass feature motivates me to get outside and see who I can find, the games are engaging and long lasting fun, quite the contrary to all those mobile titles, and the ability to control said games with actual buttons and pads just adds to the fun. I just absolutely adore this game system!

I have those Ambassador Programme games, including those 10 exclusive GBA games (which includes a GBA Mario Bros inside Yoshi's Island/Mario Advance 3). I had them transfered to my New3DS when I upgraded and replaced (that Cosmos Black 3DS of mine has a small crack on the 3D screen; still works and 3D still functions unhindered). The 3DS is probably my most played console, my library for it (including downloaded titles) is HUGE. Probably my biggest gaming collection for a system.

I AM SO PISSED. I got a 3DS on day one of it's release. But the sd card slot was not reading the SD card I put in there so I had the Geek Squad look at it, but the only thing they could do was give me a new one AFTER THE PRICE DROP. I'm actually grateful for the apology. It introduced me to the fire emblem series, included many great GBA games and we got game exclusivity for a long ass time (heck maybe they haven't even released all of the GBA games we got). Sure there were some lower-tier games mixed in but it was a nice gesture and over time I'm more than grateful for it. With the Wii U we just got shafted and that's it.

My brother has a condition that doesn't let him detect 3D at all. He doesn't see a difference between the screen when the 3D is on vs. when it's not. So the 3DS is just another DS to him.

Here's one that not many people know: On the 3DS Sound application, while listening to music if you change the L & R Button's percussion sounds to the Super Mario Bros. jump & coin sounds & then press the R button to make the coin sound 99 times, the 100th time you press the button it will play the 1-up jingle instead.
