12:15 beautiful drawing… but you left out 3 of the most clinically relevant functions of insulin with regard to metabolic diseases. Insulin tells fat to go to adipose cells and tells adipose cells to throw away the key until insulin levels fall and remain low… which is hardly ever if you are eating (yes, and drinking) too much carbohydrate. Second, insulin tells cells to take glucose whether they want it or not. If they can burn it or convert it to glycogen, great. All the rest of the glucose after you suck down that 400 oz soda and 5 pound bag of potato chips is converted to fat… and sent to adipose tissue (unless adipose is already too busy, in which case fat goes to the liver and the pancreas. Doofus doctors scratch their heads and ask why their patients all have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease while clever doctors tell their patients to moderate the carbs and reverse the NAFLD. Third, insulin deactivates a lot of things that you don’t want deactivated. Like autophagy. Like DNA surveillance. Like DNA repair. Like myelin maintenance. Oh, are those important? Don’t be a doofus doctor; of course these things are important. Insulin is like a nuclear reactor: super strong and super helpful but super dangerous when you lose control of it.
