It's by far the weakest connection here as this connection would therefore connect Volo and Cyrus when other than that they have no connection. Honestly I feel it is clearly implied that the commander's partner is dead and got killed by rampaging pokemon in the past. I believe that the commander and his "problemsolver", that was the best plot twist in my opinion, are the last of an ancient tribe that lived in the Hisui-Region even before the ancestors of the two clans arrived. The region was clearly settled long before as the ruins suggest. When you interact with the statues in the highlands there is the question "but who built them?", I believe this also fits the character of the commander and gives a good and compelling motivation for his actions when he clads himself in steel and literaly walks to war to kill whatever pokemon is at the tempel causing the rift. It is clearly stated, that the commander and the mochi maker are the last of there people that got destroyed by pokemon. This is the reason why the commander wants to build a new and save place for the people. Also the place of their origin has the same name as one of the ruins in the highlands map. This would also explain why the armour he wears seams to be a combination of japanese and european design inspiration. Compared to the other leaders of the Expedition he is also the only one with a clear japanese inspired background and name. The professor is strait up a person of galarian (english) background as he is speaking english in the japanese and german game versions. I started today with my japanese playthrough of the game after I finished in german and I have to say some parts in the english translation are very different then the original japanese and also the german translation which I think are interesting. In the original and the german translation the "Nobles" are called Kings and Queens specificly. Now that I have this fancy KZbin-thingy I leave a sub and maybe I will sometimes offer translations in the comments; at least someplace where my Japanese Studies come in handy

And not all of the characters in Legends are necessarily the ancestor of the characters they resemble. GameFreak spoke on both subjects. While Rei and Akari LOOK like Dawn and Lucas, there are enough differences (including handedness) to contradict it. In particular, Iscan and Palina would need to be the ancestors to the same people - they are having an affair that they don't want their respective clans to learn about, and when the clans unite at the end they come out about the relationship and get married. Speaking of, Palina isn't wearing snow goggles. That's a diving mask. Because she is a diver by trade. Snow goggles look like what the Recon Squad in Sun and Moon wear. They aren't to keep snow out of the eyes, they're to reduce glare and prevent Snow Blindness.

Given the level of technology and the slowly improving relations of the Diamond and Pearl Clans, and the Galaxy Team, I feel confident that the game takes place in the early to mid 1800s. Allow me to explain: Photography as we know it today got its start in 1839, and barring Professor Laventon's steampunk Kodak, the photographic technology lines up well. The Galaxy Team also appears to use electric lighting, albeit an early iteration of it. I also believe that gunpowder had been invented, due to the firework shot that fires out of Pokeballs to signify a Pokemon having been caught. Maybe guns just don't work well on Pokemon. Finally, we have the aftermath of the events of the game. Since the Temple of Sinnoh was destroyed, and we as the player discovered that no entity known as Sinnoh exists (instead being Arceus, then Dialga and Palkia), the Diamond and Pearl Clans, with the Galaxy Team, decided to rename the Hisui Region as the Sinnoh Region, and to rename the ruins of Sinnoh's temple to Spear Pillar after the events of the game. This would reflect Hokkaido's renaming, which happened in 1869.

I think one thing ossibly discounted in this is characters that are also specifically referrences to characters that only appear in the anime. One that was like a bucket of ice water to the face for me was that Melli is 900% the ancestor of Team Rocket's very own James. Mannerisms and style both match.

I think Spitiromb request is one of the best. The message is that, inside the Odd Keystone, one of the 108 spirits broke the seal. That one spirit, Vessa, searched for the player to help her collect them all, which could've been done by herself too but she still had that single wish to play with someone before getting sealed again. We can finally get to sorta know a bit one of the 108 spirits thanks to this request, who happens to be just the spirit of a girl. This request also reveals how lonely some of those spirits probably feel inside the Odd Keystone.

I must say, that after playing legends arceus, I'm even more on Lockstin's side about the time frame of the game. The whole architecture and even the clothing resembles, what you can find about Japan around 1850 to 1900. It'd make sense, that there are other Pokédexes as well, ride pokémon are already used in Alola. Spiritombs "hundreds of years" would make sense as well, if its just 150-200 years back from today. The story framework is a colonization effort and learning about "zoology". There are no "farm animal" pokémon around like miltank, tauros or mareep, who should already be domesticated on the main land. Also we get a Petitlil to craft a known remedy for the psyduck. I do not really see a reason to say it is way earlier... We can buy dress suits and "modern" shoes for arceus sake.

Yeah, and the stuff that's modeled on the more Western style looks like it's from the late 19th century. Probably near or during the second Industrial Revolution (even though it obviously hadn't made it to Hisui yet) because the Galarian Weezing on the headquarters is based off the smokestacks from old coal plants.

I found a super cool Easter egg in the game just this morning. The movie The Rise of Darkrai has a character named Baron Alberto who has a Lickilicky, and if you challenge the Path of Solitude with Darkrai, the opponent Ingo chooses for you is a Lickilicky. I understood the reference as soon as I saw what Pokémon Ingo chose for me to fight.

It’s so hard watching the community run around frantically trying to figure out who’s an ancestor of who when I doubt all of them even have ancestors/descendants. People are trying to justify it by “that’s the point of worldbuilding” but it’s very possible some of these characters just died and never got descendants

I'm still on the theory that perhaps Volo finds a daughter of Cogita's and their bloodlines merge there but then diverge again into Cynthia and Lusamine being distant relatives: Cynthia taking more after Cogita and Lusamine taking the ideals of Volo leading to their creation of Type: Null to fulfill that line of Volo's of conquering Arceus. No matter how many centuries it took to took them.

There are quite a few references to the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series in Legends, the Noble boss fight theme has the Fogbound Lake motif, there are drawings in cave walls that look similar to Time Gears, the story itself is super reminiscent of the player character being taken from their world and transformed in PMD, even a little bit of Ingo also being transported back reminds me a LOT about Gengar in PMD Blue Team being a second human to be transformed and put into the world of Pokemon
